Page 1 of 21 SMARTBoard Introduction Interactive whiteboards are an excellent way to involve students in classroom learning by providing the look and feel of a regular whiteboard with computer-based technology that students will surely love. SMARTBoards provide instructors with many great features to develop great classroom activities such as being able to: Insert media into white boards (Ex. Images, Flash Video, Sounds) Take screen captures Insert attachments Create tables Record white board sessions Download Once you have your SMARTBoard hardware properly installed, you will need to download the Notebook software to start using your interactive whiteboard. To do so, please go to and click on the operating system that you want to install your notebook software for. You may also find it helpful to download and review the Wireless Bluetooth Connection specification PDF for your SMARTBoard. You can download the PDF by going to The PDF will be located in the Accessories section.

Page 4 of 21 The teacher's hub is the information center for instructors. SMARTBoard provides two different types of training courses for teachers: Getting Started This training course is designed for instructors who have never really used a SMARTBoard or who are not so familiar with technology Enhancing Skills This course is for more experienced SMARTBoard users who are already familiar with interactive whiteboards and have a decent level of technological knowledge
Page 5 of 21 Basics Using basic SMARTBoard tools To start off, we will want to open a new blank notebook window. To do so, click on the New Notebook File link located in the Quick Start tab of the Welcome Center. Main Window Once you have your blank notebook document opened up, you will see the main interface screen in SMARTBoard. The screen contains three distinct areas including: White Board work space This is the area where you will be conducting your work. All of your text, images, and other media and information will be placed in here
Page 6 of 21 Main Toolbar The main toolbar contains your basic tools that you will need to create your interactive lessons and assignments Slide View Area This portion of the main window will display all of the pages that you have created as well as four different tabs including the Page Sorter tab, Gallery tab, Attachments tab, and Properties tab Adding/Renaming/Deleting Pages The first thing you will want to do is to add the amount of pages you would like to create for your class and provide names for each page. There are several ways to perform these commands: To add a page Either click on the green plus sign located in the main toolbar as well as the slide view area or you can select the drop down menu above a slide to insert additional blank pages To rename a page You can also select the drop down menu to rename any page but the quickest way would be simply to double click on a page to rename it To delete a page You can use the drop down menu to delete any slide or you can just hit delete on your keyboard while a slide is selected to delete it as well Note: The drop down menu commands can also be accessed by right clicking on a slide
Page 7 of 21 Adding a Background If you would like to add background colors or images to your pages instead of just leaving them white, then you may change the fill effects of your pages by selecting the Fill Effects tab in your slide view area. Here you may select to insert: Solid color fill Gradient fill Pattern fill Image fill This option will require you to provide an image from your computer Inserting Text To insert text into you interactive whiteboard presentations: 1. To edit your table: Select the table in your white board work area Click on the Fill Effects tab in the left side of the screen You will be given several different ways to edit your table. The three main tabs that we are concerned with are the fill effects tab, the line style tab, and the text style tab as they directly pertain to your table
Page 13 of 21 Adding Images to Content Folder To add your own images into your SMARTBoard content folder: Click on the Gallery tab Select the My Content folder from the list of folders Locate the image files you would like to include in your content folder Click and drag the files into the display area for your content folder Saving images into your content folder allows you to insert images into your white board faster because you do not have to manually search for them through the insert command. Simply drag an image file from the My Content folder right into the white board work area
Page 14 of 21 Screen Capture To do a screen capture of your white board work area: Click on the screen capture tool located in the top toolbar A small screen will open up that displays the different types of screen captures you can perform The left most button allows you to draw a rectangle around the area that you wish to take a screen capture of The next button over from the left lets you take a screen capture of the entire screen If you have multiple screens connected to your computer, the next button over will let you choose which display you would like to take screen capture of The last button on the far right lets you do a unique type of screen capture. Instead of drawing a simple rectangle around the area you wish to capture, you can draw out your own unique shape and capture only the area that you need
Page 15 of 21 Recording Whiteboards To record your white board activity for future playback: Click on the fill effects tab on the far left In the pane to the right, select the Page Recording tab Next click on the Start Recording button When you see the red recording icon displayed in the top left part of the work area, you may start performing your white board activities and they will all be recorded When you are finished working in SMARTBoard and would like to stop recording, go back to the Page Recording tab and click on the Stop Recording button to end the recording session
Page 16 of 21 If you would like to review what you have recorded in your recording session, simply click on the Play button right below the start button to review your session. Note: You are also able to review your recording session at a later time if you have saved the notebook. Just open up the notebook file and click on the play button again to replay your recorded session Inserting Attachments To save attachments into your SMARTBoard interface and insert them into your white board lesson: Click on the Attachments tab on far left side
Page 17 of 21 In the attachments window, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen Click on the Insert button Next select from three options that display Insert a copy of a file This is useful if you would like to insert PowerPoint or PDF files that you would like to show to students during the white board session Insert a hyperlink This allows you to insert a hyperlink to a web page that you want to visit during the white board presentation Insert a shortcut to a file This option is similar to inserting a copy of a file but the hyperlink does not take up any space as does the copy. Both options work in the same way Once you have uploaded the attachments that you want to use in your SMARTBoard session, you insert the respective files by simply clicking on an attachment and dragging it onto your white board work area
Page 18 of 21 Creating Themes SMARTBoard allows instructors to create custom themes for their courses if they wish to use the same type of theme for several lessons. To create a custom white board theme: Click on the Format menu Scroll down the options and select Themes Choose to create a theme Note: You can also create themes from a page that you are currently working on Next, your white board work area will display a theme editing screen in which you can create a custom theme. The very top text field will allow you to choose a name for the custom theme while the work area will allow you to: Modify the theme text style and color Insert images Place text Insert other media (audio, flash, attachments)
Page 19 of 21 Editing the Theme Text To edit the text style for your custom theme, double click on the text to bring up the Fonts toolbar. Within the fonts toolbar you will be able to edit the: Font style Text size Alignment Color Bulleting Other options You can also edit some of the same options in the fill effects pane on the left of the white board work area but it is not necessary to use it since the Fonts toolbar contains most of the tools that you will require This is an example of a custom theme that you could design for your white board presentations
Page 20 of 21 Pedagogy Classroom Uses for the SMARTBoard Brainstorming Have your students discuss a topic in a small group setting and let them brainstorm some ideas.then have students write their ideas on the board and allow them to drag and drop their ideas onto other thumbnail slides to group ideas. Motor Skills SMARTBoard allows students with limited motor skills to still take advantage of the interactive white board features. Graphic Design An example of a graphic design activity would be for students to design background slides by inserting a country or continent. They should then insert animal clip art from the Collections Gallery. Students can drag and drop to thumbnail slides of each animal to its geographical habitat.
Page 21 of 21 Pictures and Storytelling This type of activity involves opening Notebook and inserting a picture into the white board. Next use the picture as a story starter. Ask students what is happening in the story and have them draw conclusions from the picture. Group Work Errors and shared items are much easier to see on the SMARTBoard. Give students an opportunity to do the sharing and editing at the SMARTBoard. Saving Notebooks for future lessons Save the Notebook file for use in future lessons. A math instructor can save the work on a particular problem and then bring it up the next day for review. Also, students that did not attend class can look at a PDF or a video recording of the problem. SMART Ideas Use SMART Ideas to build graphic organizers and concept maps. Web Resources Look at some K-12 games to use with the white board at and If you would like to research more SMARTBoard applications, please visit the Smart Technologies online Training Center: Help and Support For Help setting up and using the SMARTBoard please contact your Instructional Technology Specialists on campus: Jane Melander melander@mnstate.edu Or contact SMART Technologies directly at You can also SMART Technologies at support@smarttech.com
