9 Chapter 1 Provisioning storage This chapter includes the following topics: About Storage Provisioning About creating a storage template using Veritas Storage Foundation Add-on for Storage Provisioning Creating a storage template using VxFS file systems Creating a storage template using NTFS file system Creating a storage template using volumes Creating a new storage template design Updating a storage template Provisioning storage Importing storage templates Exporting storage templates Deleting storage templates Locking storage template Unlocking storage template About Storage Provisioning Storage provisioning is the process of assigning storage, usually in the form of server disk drive space to optimize the performance of a storage area network (SAN). Traditionally, the SAN administrator provisions storage, and it can be a tedious process. The storage template is an efficient way to quickly create storage

10 10 Provisioning storage About creating a storage template using Veritas Storage Foundation Add-on for Storage Provisioning based on the configurations that are mentioned in the template. This mechanism lets you specify storage attributes and conditions, and the template can be used by the storage operators to allocate storage. It ensures that the allocated storage contains attributes mentioned in the template, and it adheres to the conditions that are specified in the template. Veritas Operations Manager storage provisioning lets you create storage templates from existing virtual storage devices such as volumes and file systems. It extracts all the properties of the virtual storage device, and recreates the entire stack. The supported file systems are Veritas File System (VxFS) and NTFS. With Veritas Operations Manager storage provisioning, you determine the virtual device characteristics of the storage object using the file system, volume manager, and operating system utilities and can create a storage template based on this information. A storage template lets you migrate existing virtual devices to new ones with different properties. For example, you can migrate volumes from thick LUNs to thin LUNs. Note: Veritas Storage Foundation Add-on for Storage Provisioning version 4.0RU1 is supported on Veritas Operations Manager 4.0, and the add-on supports 3.1, or later managed hosts. About creating a storage template using Veritas Storage Foundation Add-on for Storage Provisioning This section presents the methods you can choose to create a storage template. You can create a storage template using one of the following methods: Modeling it on existing VxFS file systems See Creating a storage template using VxFS file systems on page 11. Modeling it on existing NTFS file systems See Creating a storage template using NTFS file system on page 24. Basing it on existing volumes See Creating a storage template using volumes on page 25. Creating a new template design See Creating a new storage template design on page 26.

19 Provisioning storage Creating a storage template using VxFS file systems 19 Table 1-8 File system DST Policy (continued) Select a policy from 3 predefined policies available, which are: ssd_dbdata_and_index_template - This template can be used by DST for setting up databases in the context of SSD storage. This template assumes a common practice of keeping logs (undo and temp files) in one file system and data (data and index files) on a different file system. This template can be used for file system hosting the data (data and index files) of the database. The policy has two tiers 'tier1' and a 'tier2' It proposes two RULEs. The first one for the index files is based on ACCESSTEMP and the second one for the remaining files including data files, based on IOTEMP. The first RULE can be eliminated, should one decide to place all the files including indices based on IOTEMP itself. You can use ssd_dblog_and_tmp_template.xml for your file system that stores database log and temp files. The tier1 can be out of ssds and the tier2 will be out of other storage. ssd_dblog_and_tmp_template - This template can be used by DST for setting up databases in the context of SSD storage. This template assumes a common practice of keeping logs (undo and temp files) in one file system and data (data and index files) on a different file system. This template can be used for file system hosting the logs (undo and temp files) of the database. The policy relocates database logs to tier1 storage for faster access. You can use ssd_dbdata_and_index_template.xml for your file system that stores database data and index files. Appropriate modifications in below SELECT is

Also note that this policy covers only the specific files in the SELECT. If the placement of another files on the same file system is desired, another RULE could be added with SELECT's PATTERN of * to cover rest of the files. The tier1 can be staged on SSD storage and the tier2 can be staged on other storage. ssd_read_intensive_template - The policy has two tiers 'tier1' and a 'tier2'. This policy could be used for any file system in the context of SSD storage. This policy tries to reduce the SSD worn-out by placing read intensive files on SSD storage while evacuating write intensive files from there. The tier1 can be staged on ssd storage and the tier2 can be staged on other storage. Enforcement Schedule Enforce a schedule for the DST policy, which can be: Daily - Specify the time. Weekly - Specify the day of the week and time. Monthly - Specify the day of the month and time. Maximum enforcement time(hour) Volume Tags Set a maximum enforcement time in hours.
