MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 3 MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE Before Installing Licensing Engine Connectivity In order for MicroPress Plus and Max Servers to connect to a new print engine, a new license number is required. To obtain a new license number, submit the Certificate of Entitlement, included with the engine's connectivity kit. NOTE: This is not required for MicroPress Solo Servers. Multiple Processors CAUTION: IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE PHYSICAL PROCESSORS Do not proceed with installation of MicroPress unless you have the key code for enabling multiple processors. NOTE: This restriction does not apply to logical processors such as a single processor chip with dual or quad cores. Suspended Jobs CAUTION: PSM jobs in the Suspended (S) state may become corrupted when upgrading the MicroPress software. Suspended jobs should be set to another state to avoid possible corruption. Saving and Restoring Fonts Use the following steps to save and restore fonts that have been installed into the MicroPress RIP. This procedure should be done for each RIP installation on the MicroPress server. For more details refer to the section Appendix B, Backup and Restore the MicroPress RIP in the MicroPress RIP Reference Manual. Backup RIP Fonts CAUTION: Restoring fonts is not possible unless a Backup operation is performed before removing, reinstalling or upgrading MicroPress software. Perform Backup operations any time fonts are added to the RIP. The process is described below. This operation will save RIP fonts to a single file called Fonts.ps. Processing this file through the RIP will restore fonts added or deleted since the last backup. This might also be used to load the current font set to a future RIP version.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 4 TO BACKUP CURRENT RIP FONTS 1 Copy the file \Micropress\RIP\trsysm01\Utilities\BackupFonts.ps to a location that is not in the \MicroPress folder. 2 Launch the MicroPress RIP. 3 From the MicroPress RIP, print the BackupFonts.ps file from the location determined in Step 1. From the MP-RIP menu, select Print File. The page setup selection does not matter. 4 Select the file BackupFonts.ps (see step 1). 5 Click OK. The MicroPress RIP will create the file Fonts.ps and store it in the folder with the BackupFonts.ps file (see Step 1). 6 Launch the Windows Explorer and browse to the location of the Fonts.ps file to confirm that it was indeed created. 7 Install the MicroPress software. See the following section Installing and configuring MicroPress Software on page 5 for instructions. Restore RIP Fonts The RIP can restore fonts using the file Fonts.ps. Restoring fonts will not delete existing fonts. TO RESTORE FONTS 1 Launch the MicroPress RIP. 2 From the MP-RIP menu, select Print File. The page setup selection does not matter. 3 From the Print File dialog, go to the directory previously selected in Step 1 Backup RIP Fonts. 4 Select the file Fonts.ps. This file must be created using the backup steps described above. If the Fonts.ps file does not exist, restoration is not possible. 5 Click OK.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 5 Installing and configuring MicroPress Software A single DVD is required for the installation. NOTE: The installer requires a monitor resolution of 1024 x 768 and 256 colors. If your monitor is set at a lower or a higher resolution, images on the installation wizard will appear distorted. Click the Start button and then Settings > Control Panel > Display, then click the Settings tab to set your monitor resolution to 1024 x 768 or greater. Newer MicroPress systems ship with a minimum default resolution setting of 1440 x 900. TO INSTALL THE MICROPRESS SERVER SOFTWARE NOTE: If an installation is cancelled before finishing, an error message may be displayed when the installation is started again. If this occurs, the server must be restarted. The installation will then function correctly. 1 Exit all open applications. 2 Insert the MicroPress installation disc into the DVD-ROM drive. NOTE: If the installer does not start automatically, click the Start button and then double-click on Computer. 3 Double-click on the DVD-ROM drive that has the MicroPress Installation Disc.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 6 4 If the Windows 7 and Vista OS User Account control warning appears, select Allow to continue. This warning will not appear when installing MicroPress on Windows XP, 2003, or 2008 Server. 5 At the Installation Wizard screen, click MicroPress. If MicroPress is currently installed on the server and the MicroPress installation disc contains a newer version than what is installed, you will see a prompt to Upgrade. Otherwise the install will skip to step 8. 6 To upgrade to a newer version of MicroPress system software, select Yes. NOTE: If MicroPress is currently installed on the server and the MicroPress installation disc contains the same version as what is installed, you will see the prompt to Repair or Remove. Otherwise the installer will skip to step 8.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 7 7 To repair or remove existing version of MicroPress software, select Next and follow the onscreen prompts. NOTE: New Installations and Upgrades will follow the same steps from this point forward. Additional support files may be added to the server before the MicroPress system software installation can begin, which may require a reboot of the server as needed. The installation process will resume automatically following any reboots of the server. 8 At the Welcome screen click Next.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 8 9 Read the Software License Agreement and choose I accept the terms in the license agreement to accept the terms, then click Next. 10 Choose the drive where the MicroPress software should be installed and click Next. NOTE: When installing the MicroPress as an update, determine the location of existing MicroPress software before proceeding. When prompted for a drive location to install the update, select the same drive letter as the existing installation. MicroPress software is now ready for installation.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 9 11 Click Install to proceed. NOTE: The MicroPress installer displays a status bar during the install process. It may take several minutes for the task to complete. You will be prompted if the server requires a reboot during the process. If so, the installer will resume after the reboot takes place. When the installation is complete, the system will need to be configured. 12 Click Finish to proceed to launch the MicroPress Configuration Wizard. NOTE: Advanced users can select the Show the Windows Installer log which provides detailed information on all the components that were installed.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 10 Configuring the MicroPress Server This section describes the following: Entering license information Adding/configuring licensed PrintStations Adding/configuring virtual engines which manage supported PrintStations Verifying MicroPress installation and configuring workflows TO CONFIGURE THE MICROPRESS SERVER NOTE: When you finish the installation of MicroPress Server software, the MicroPress Configuration Wizard is displayed. (See step 12 in To install the MicroPress Server software on page 5. 1 At the MicroPress Configuration Wizard Welcome screen, click Next.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 11 NOTE: If the MicroPress Configuration Wizard is cancelled during the installation process, it can be restarted by clicking the Start button and then Programs > MicroPress > MicroPress Configuration. This is the only visible application under MicroPress until the configuration is completed. 2 If this is a new installation, type the MicroPress license number (case sensitive) provided by your dealer. NOTE: In the case of an upgrade, the field is automatically populated with the license string that enables currently licensed components. A different license string can be entered if provided with the software update, but may not be required. 3 Configure licensed PrintStations in the PrintStation configuration dialog. The dialog is automatically populated with all the PrintStations the server is currently licensed for. 4 Enter the static IP address for each PrintStation by clicking the corresponding field in the IP column. 5 To verify the network connection for each PrintStation, select it and click Web Interface.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 12 NOTE: AutoFill will reset the window to a standard configuration based on enabled licenses if PrintStations are manually added or deleted. 6 When all PrintStations have been configured, click Next. 7 Configure Virtual Engines that manage supported PrintStations. The Virtual Engine configuration window will automatically populate with a Virtual Engine set to manage each PrintStation the server is currently licensed for. When more than one PrintStation type is licensed and the PrintStation connectivity is created in the previous step, a ONE-to-ONE (VE-PrintStation) and a ONE-to-ALL (VE-PrintStations) will automatically be created. NOTE: Auto Fill will reset the window to a standard configuration based on enabled licenses if Virtual Engines are manually added or deleted. PrintStations can be managed by multiple Virtual Engines. Add Virtual Engines to segregate print jobs in the MicroPress workflow. 8 When all Virtual Engines are configured, click Next.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 13 9 Configure the RIP and publishing options. NOTE: Do not select the Keep RIP configuration check box unless you are upgrading an existing system and do not want to add any new virtual printer workflows. 10 Select the Virtual Engines which will be supported by the MP-RIP and published to the network via the Windows Print Manager, and click Next. 11 Select the Default paper sizes (US or European Standard Sizes). 12 Install Adobe Reader 8.0 and set up the EFI Desktop Wallpaper, if required.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 14 NOTE: Adobe Reader is necessary to view help files within MicroPress. if Adobe Reader 8.0 or higher is already installed on the server, the check box will not be pre-selected. 13 In the Setup complete window, click Finish. Verifying MicroPress Installation and Configuring Workflows If the MicroPress RIP was updated during the installation, launch each RIP from the shortcut installed in the Start menu. Do not use the Launch MicroPress shortcut at this point. The Launch MicroPress shortcut should only be used after each RIP installation has been started for the second time and configuration changes are not being applied. TO VERIFY INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURE WORKFLOWS 1 Right-click the MP-RIP and select Run as Administrator. After configuring itself, the MP-RIP will automatically shut down. 2 Right-click the same MP-RIP(s) and select Run as Administrator a second time. The MP-RIP should remain running this time. For MicroPress servers with a second, third, or fourth MP-RIP installed, step 1 and step 2 must be completed for each MP-RIP application. 3 Launch PrintStation Manager and make sure that all PrintStations are configured correctly and communicating with the PSM. 4 Launch MicroSpool and verify Virtual Printers are available. MicroSpool is a standard application for a Plus and Max server, but a licensed option for a Solo server. 5 Open the Windows Print Manager and verify all Virtual Printers are present and shared.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 15 6 Right-click any one of the MicroPress print drivers in the Windows Print Manager, select Properties, and then select Print Test Page. Verify the test page is delivered to the corresponding Virtual Engine in the PrintStation Manager. This verifies the workflow is complete and the file will print when connected to an actual print engine with a valid IP address. Configuring Pipes for Printing to MicroPress If a Custom New Install or Update is not done, configuring the engines must be done before most functions of the MicroPress can be used. Configuring MicroPress pipes for printing may be done automatically or manually depending on the desired outcome. Pipes can be created automatically using PrintStation Manager Configuration. For complete instructions for defining licensing for all purchased options of MicroPress and the configuration of all engines for either host adapter ports or network IP addresses, see the PrintStation Manager Configuration Manual. The method explained here creates pipes using the default MicroPress pipe names. The manual method should be used to create pipes with custom names. Automatic Configuration of Pipes TO AUTOMATICALLY CREATE PIPES 1 Exit all open applications including Peedy, the Microsoft Help Agent. Right click on Peedy and select Exit. 2 Go to the Start menu and then Programs MicroPress and select PrintStation Manager Configuration. 3 Check the Generate RIP Autoconfig on exit box.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 16 CAUTION: Although new virtual printers can be added using this method, all printers are reset to factory defaults in this process. In addition, virtual printers not selected for RIP Autoconfig are deleted. 4 Exit PSM Configuration. 5 Go to the Start menu and select Programs MicroPress and select MicroPress RIP. Launch each RIP from the shortcut installed in the Start menu. Do not use the Launch MicroPress shortcut at this point. The Launch MicroPress shortcut should only be used after each RIP has been started for the second time. NOTE: At this point, it is possible that several MP-RIP message dialogs will be displayed. Select Yes or OK to continue. These messages will only be displayed the first time the RIP is started, shut down and re-started. If multiple RIP s were installed, this process will have to be performed for each one. A window requesting a license number may also be displayed. This number will be provided by your dealer. 6 After selecting OK to the last error message, the RIP will automatically shut down. 7 Start the RIP again. This will complete the process of the automatic pipe configurations. You must wait for the RIP to completely load prior to launching other MicroPress applications. The message There are no filename exclusion will be the last line in the window when the RIP has completed its configuration. 8 Launch the PrintStation Manager Configuration application and confirm that all PrintStations are configured correctly. Manual Configuration of Pipes MicroPress RIP s Input Controller on a server that has MicroSpool installed an input named MP-RIP01 by default and it is of type MicroSpool. For servers without MicroSpool, it is NT Pipe. This is the factory default configuration; however there may be times when manually editing this component is required. The example below shows how to manually create an input and printer share for an HP DesignJet. Example: 1 Select (uncheck) Start Inputs from the MP-RIP menu. 2 From the MicroPress RIP, select Input Controller from the MP-RIP menu.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 17 3 Click New and fill out the items as follows on the Input Channel Edit dialog: For Name, type MP-RIP01. If there are multiple RIPs, the name must match the RIP for which this input is intended. The second RIP name would be MP-RIP02, and so on. For Type, select MicroSpool for a server with MicroSpool installed OR NT Pipe for a server without MicroSpool For Page Setup select the appropriate Page Setup. 4 Click Configure (not available if you selected MicroSpool) to display the Named Pipe Plugin dialog and enter TRDriver as the Pipe Prefix. 5 Click OK. 6 Click OK to save the new configuration. 7 Close the Input Controller dialog by clicking the x in the upper right-hand corner. 8 Select (check) Start Inputs from the MP-RIP menu. 9 To add the NT printer go to the Start menu and click Settings Printers. Click on Add Printer. 10 Select My Computer and click Next. 11 Click the Add Port button.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE Select Local Port and click New Port. 13 For the name enter: \\.\pipe\trdriver\mp-rip01 14 The case sensitive syntax is: \\.\pipe\<name-of-pipe-prefix>\<name-of-the-nt-pipe-input>. 15 Click OK. 16 Click Close on the Printer Ports dialog. 17 Click Next on the Add Printer Wizard. 18 Select EFI from the Manufacturers list in the left pane and then the appropriate printer from the right pane. Click Next. 19 Select Keep existing driver (recommended) and click Next. 20 Click Next. 21 Select Shared or Not shared. Enter a Share Name if shared. Click Next. 22 Click Finish. NOTE: Refer to Appendix C of the MicroPress RIP Reference Manual, the PrintStation Manager Configuration Reference Manual and the MicroSpool Configuration Reference Manual for further instructions on resetting all virtual printers, creating virtual printers, etc. MicroPress and Mac OS computers Some additional software installation is necessary in order for an Apple computer to take advantage of the MicroPress solution. TO INSTALL THE MICROPRESS PPDS ON MAC OS COMPUTERS Insert the MicroPress Installation CD into the Macintosh. 1 Open System Preferences.
MICROPRESS INSTALLATION GUIDE 19 2 Under the 'Hardware' section open 'Print & Fax'. 3 Select '+' (located at the bottom of the Printers list) and the 'Add Printer' window will open. 4 Select the appropriate 'Network' where the MicroPress Server is located. After selecting a 'Network' a list of machines residing on the network will become populated. 5 Select the MicroPress Server from the list of machines. A list of all installed MicroPress printers will be displayed. (Troubleshooting step: If the list of printers does not become available after a short while reboot the Mac and repeat the steps above.) 6 Select the desired MicroPress printer. 7 On the 'Add Printer' window the 'Name' field and 'Print Using' field will become populated. 8 In the 'Print Using' drop down menu select 'Other '. 9 Navigate to the MicroPress installation CD and select the 'MicroPressMac' folder. 10 Select the appropriate PPD file for the chosen printer and select 'Open'. User is then taken back to the 'Add Printer' window and the 'Print Using' field is now populated with the PPD name. 11 Select 'Add'. The 'Installed Options' dialog is opened. 12 Select the finisher options that are connected to the printer and select 'Continue'. Installation is complete and user is now able to send documents for printing.
