Reel Delivery: Design for Media Distribution Spring Class 11 Simple DVD Project using DVD Studio Pro This document contains instruction to create a basic Hollywood style DVD. We ll use Quicktime movies as content. At the end you will finsih with two DVDs: One DVD will include two folders - VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders - they will be created when you build the final DVD. This is the DVD that is playable in a DVD player or on a computer. You will also create data folder which contains all of the assets or materials, including the DVDSP project file, used to create the DVD. This DATA folder will be created and used from the beginning of the project - this is a place to keep all of your data/backup. Create two new folders, one called MyDVD and another called MyDATA. After you complete this entire exercise, the MyDVD folder will hold the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders - the MyDATA folder will hold all of the assets needed to burn the DVD again and/or modify the DVD. The process outlined in the following pages is not comprehensive, it is simply an over simplified outline - there are many other details to consider, but these broad strokes will immerse you in the process. In this example we will create on menu with three videos, you can modify yours to your project. Here are the 3 major steps: 1 - Gather assets - acquire the quicktime movie you will use and create at least one main menu in Photoshop. 2 - Import these assets into DVDSP and author the project 3 - Build and burn the project. Details of each step are on the following pages. Before you begin, create the folders as outlined above. The DATA folder is where you will save ALL of your assets, including the DVDSP project file. page 1 of 7

1 - Gather assets Acquire quicktime video clips and create one main menu in Photoshop 1a - Acquire 3 quicktime video clips Use quicktime movie clips. They can be from any source including from your website project. The movies must be in the.mov format, the size must be in an aspect ratio of 16:9, letterboxed if necessary, and compressed correctly. Note: we are using 16:9 assets here as an example for all assets - movies and menus. Some movies must be opened in Quicktime and exported to achieve the proper format for DVD. If you are using movies from your website, they probably use H.264 compression and a size of 640 x 268 which is the wrong compression and aspect ratio for our purposes (DVD). To prepare it for DVDSP, open the movie in Quicktime Player 7 and choose file, export. Choose export from the pop up menu then click on options. For video settings, choose Compression type: DV/DVCPRO NTSC or none. For size choose NTSC 720 x :9. Check the Preserve aspect ratio using: Letterbox box (seen at the bottom of this page). For Sound Settings and Format choose AAC. The resulting settings should look similar to the dialog boxs on this page. Name the movie and save it to your Data folder. The movie is now ready to be imported into DVDSP. Create all Quicktime movies like this from any source. Next we will create the main menu in Photoshop. page 2 of 7

1 - Gather assets (continued) 1b - Create one main menu in Photoshop The objective here is to create a main menu which will end up as a two layered photoshop document - a background layer and an overlay layer as shown at the end of this section on the next page. Open Photoshop and choose file, new. From the resulting dialog box choose the preset Film & Video, from size choose NTSC DV Widescreen. This is always the size you will use for a 16:9 DVD menu (unless your are using 4:3 aspect ration, in that case, choose NTSC DV ). Choose an image for your background or simply use white or a color. Open the image in Photoshop, get it to be approximately the same size as your new file (including resolution, 72 is fine), then copy and paste it into your new file. (or just drag it in as below) page 3 of 7

1 - Gather assets(continued) 1b - Create one main menu in Photoshop (cont.) Create 3 icons representing buttons - in this case I used 3 small stills from the trailers. Copy and paste them into the main menu document as before. Add a title of some kind - in this case I used the word trailers. You should have several layers by now. Create another new layer and draw what will be the actual buttons near the 2 icons - in this case I drew black lines. Whatever you create, IT MUST BE BLACK and it must end up on it s own layer. Remember, the actual buttons MUST BE BLACK - they can be changed to any color later in DVDSP. Important - before executing the below layer merge, keep an original copy of your layered Photoshop image for modification later - it could be in your original assets folder Now simply merge all layers except the overlay layer and this will be the background layer. The overlay layer should be the only other layer and it should consist of only black images which will become the buttons in DVDSP. Name the two layers accordingly as shown at the right, this is the way the Photoshop document layers should look when you are finished with the menu. All of your assets are now prepared to be imported into DVDSP. Three Quicktime movies and one Photoshop document. 2 - Import assets and author your DVD Open DVD Studio Pro and import your four assets into the asset bin. By default, you will have one empty menu and one empty track. Drag the Photoshop document into the menu. Double click the menu and the inspector will read menu at the top. Under the General tab in the inspector choose the title of your Photoshop document for overlay file. Click the General tab In the inspector and choose the title of your Photoshop document again for the Overlay File. Choose overlay for the Overlay Layer (you had named that layer in Photoshop). Choose the next tab, Menu in the Menu Inspector. Under Background Layers, uncheck overlay and check background. Your inspector should look something like the first image on the next page. page 4 of 7

2 - Import and author your DVD (continued) Menu Inspector after draging your 2 layered Photoshop document into the empty menu. Now you can create the three tracks from the 3 movies. Drag one movie (the audio track will come along with it) into the one empty track. Your graphical display should now show the menu and one track. Drag the other two tracks into the graphical display area and you should have one menu and tree tracks, arrange them as see as seen below. Select the menu, and the menu should be in the viewer, and the inspector should display the details of menu 1. Now draw the buttons in the viewer where they belong, around the three images or buttons. Select each button and name it in the menu inspector where is says name. For example, select the button for the first movie, say TrueGrit, and name it TruGritButton. Do the same for the other two buttons. These naming conventions become very important later when you have many more buttons and menus. Choose a target for each button as shown on the following page. page 5 of 7

2 - Import and author your DVD (cont.) Choosing a track as a target for a button Link the three buttons to the three tracks in the same manner. Finally, select (double click) each track so the inspector shows that track and choose and end point for each track. Your graphical display should now look similar to the image below. Now you are ready to build and burn your DVD. Make sure everything is saved, and your data folder contains the project file and all of the assets. Your Project1 folder should look like the one on page 1 of this document. page 6 of 7

3 - Build and burn the project data Build the DVD Choose build from the toolbar - a window will appear similar to the one at left. It ask you where you want the build to be. Select the Project1 folder which contains the Data folder as shown to the left. Clicking choose here will build the project and create the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders as shown on page one of this document Note: Below shows 2 ways of burning Discs using the native mac burner, or other software. Burn the DVD (playable) Open the folder with the VIDEO_TS and the AUDIO_TS folders. Right click on it s parent folder and choose burn to DVD Burn the project data (can be opened in DVDSP) Open the Data folder. Right click on it s parent folder and choose burn to DVD THIS IS THE DVD DATA/BACKUP We have left out several important details which will be covered in the last few weeks, including: - getting the more exact encoding settings for each movie - setting the disc properties in the disc inspector - finishing the 1st menu the way you want and setting it as the default before creating another menu - checking links in the connections tab - design issues, user navigation issues to mention a few page 7 of 7
