1 Patching M-48s Step 1: Open the Coast Standard Show File From the File menu, select Open. Choose the highest numbered show file. It will be called _Coast Standard v X.X M-48's USE THIS.S4R. In the example below, it's v1.3. Always use the highest numbered show file. Patching M-48s Page 1

2 Step 2: Open the M-48 Virtual Mixer Once the show file is loaded, the software will connect to the M-48 system. You'll know because the word MADI will be highlighted as shown below, and the Status will show as Ready. Click on the M-48 button in the upper right of the window to launch the M-48 virtual mixer. Step 3: Move the FOH Mixer to Engineer Click on the mixer labeled FOH and drag it to the Engineer's Monitor field below the list. A dialog will confirm this action, say OK.

Now, any mixer you select will be copied to the M-48 sitting on the desk. If you plug your headphones into it, you'll be able to monitor any of the mixes of the musicians on stage. Step 4: Open Levels and Patching Windows In the upper right of the Virtual M-48, there are two buttons under the heading Source Setting. Click on Lev/Pan and Assign to open these windows. For easiest use from this point on, arrange them as shown in the next step. Patching M-48s Page 3

Step 5: Set up the Windows, Open the Label Sheet Open this week's M-48 labels sheet from Finder. There is a shortcut folder on the left monitor to make it quick to get to.

Once you have the M-48 labels open on the left screen, you'll want to label the M-48s you're using this week. Many of them will be labeled correctly, but the BGVs, Perc/Winds and maybe a few others will need to be re-named. To aid in identifying them, there is a Blink LEDs feature that will blink all the LEDs on the M-48 surface so you can figure out which musician will be using it. Patching M-48s Page 4

5 Tip: Blink LEDs From the Menu button above the Virtual M-48, you can select Blink LEDs. It will blink all the LEDs on the unit selected in the M-48 list. You can leave Blink LEDs on and select different M-48s from the list and it will cycle through the M-48s. A Clear Blink button appears below and to the right of the Virtual M-48 to clear the blink. Note: It may take a few seconds for the LEDs to blink after you turn it on. Give it a minute if you don't see it right away. Patching M-48s Page 5

Step 6: Load the Libraries You will now need to load the starting point for each M-48. This will set up the default patch, as well as reset all the mixes to zero.

From the Virtual M-48 Menu button (see above step, it's right above Blink LEDs), select Library. Slide the window over to the left so you can do this quickly. Select the M-48, select the appropriate library template, then click on Recall. Most of the templates should be obvious, but if it's not, look at the M-48 label sheet. There is a note to the left of each one which template it's built on. The sequence is this: Select M-48 #1, Select the appropriate library, click Recall Select M-48 #2, Select the appropriate library, click Recall Continue until you're done. 7 Step 7: Match the Labels After you've loaded the starting point from the library for each M-48, you need to match the labels. Go through the M-48 label sheet and edit the labels on each Virtual M-48 until they match as closely as possible. As you only have 8 characters on the Virtual M-48, you'll have to abbreviate some. It doesn't matter too much what it says, as long as you know what it means. For example, Justin Electric Guitar may be abbreviated as JstElGtr or J El Gt. Patching M-48s Page 7

8 Step 8: Assign the Inputs to the Groups Once the groups are labeled on each M-48, it's time to assign the input channels to those groups. In the assign window, the Inputs are displayed on the left column (Source) while the Groups are displayed on the top (Groups). You can assign multiple inputs to a group, but an input can be assigned to only one group. Most of the time, the inputs will be already labeled correctly. However, if you're using some of the general inputs or changing what the normal inputs are used for, you'll want to rename them in the Source column just to make it easier. It's also a good idea to rename the BGVs. For example, if Michael is using RF-C, you might rename it to C-Mike. Go through and put an X in the box to assign an input to a group. Many of the inputs will be preassigned to the right group. But because things shift around a bit week to week, you'll need to make sure the vocals get into the right groups, and guitars are where they are supposed to be. Go through each group, left to right and check to be sure the proper inputs are there. Un-check any inputs that shouldn't be in there. If you accidentally assign an input to the wrong group, go back and make sure it gets put in the right group (as it will be unassigned from the proper group). Once you finish one M-48, move on to the next one. Patching M-48s Page 8

Then you can right-click on the name of the group in question, and scroll to see what is in that group. In this case, the Bass is in the Bass group, as shown by the checkmark. If something else is supposed to be there, click on it, and it will be assigned to that group. Patching M-48s Page 9

10 Step 9: Check the Pans Sometimes, we only use one channel of a stereo pair. For example, we may only use one mic on Justin's guitar one week. But the library has both channels up, with each channel panned either left or right. If we're only using one channel, you'll need to go into each M-48, and pan the channel center. Select the first M-48, then go to the Level window and find the channel. Click on the pan knob and move up or down to pan left and right. Pan it center, then select the next M-48 and do the same. Step 10: Save the Weekend File Once you're done with all the above steps, save the show file as Weekend file.s4r. Go to the File menu, select Save As... (DO NOT SELECT SAVE!!). Click on Weekend file.

Click on Weekend file.s4r and click Save. Sunday Only, Step 11: Open the Weekend File On Sunday morning, instead of opening the _Coast Standard file, open the Weekend file. This will recall all the labeling you did the day before. The M-48s save their settings every 30 seconds, so you don't have to do anything to them. The Weekend file simply recalls the labeling.
