1 SD Card Access Error Posted by Punkie - 30 May :16 My sons Home Patrol 1 scanner was working fine yesterday We took it off power and used it on battery power for about 2 hours and turned it off while still on battery power An hour or so later we tried to turn it back on using battery power as we have done many times before only to get a screen that read SD Card Access Error I have followed the steps of unplugging and removing the batteries for 1 minute with no success We do not have anything from the scanner backed up using the home patrol software on the computer I have taken out the 4mb micro SD card and tried a newly formatted 16mb SD card and placed it back in the scanner and received the same SD Card Access Error message Can anyone help us out with what to do next? Punkie Posted by vroderick - 09 Jun :44 UPDATE - SD CARD ERROR I never did get the HP2 to work to work properly I called Uniden tech support in WI 4 times and they finally conceded it was a bad SD card slot in the HP2 They gave me an RMA and I returned it to Uniden for repair/replacement When turned on, the HP2 would display the message " SD Card Error please remove batteries for one minute if this persists clear user data in Sentinel all clear" And that was it, It was like the unit was locked, I could not get into Sentinel at that point I bought a new SD card same brand same speed rating, formatted it and got the same message every time 1 / 7

3 Posted by HP2WI - 04 Jul :33 "SECOND UPDATE - SD CARD FILE ERROR" After 25 days I got my HP2 back from Uniden Their repair order said (parts used = "Loaded Software on SD Card") I turned the unit on it loaded my Wisconsin frequencies and away we go I fired up Sentinel, plugged it into the PC, go into USB Mass Storage (fingers crossed) and bingo F drive recognized All is good right? To make long story short, I tried to update it and Sentinel gave me the error message "database is corrupt operation cancelled" With Tech Support on the phone several times we could not get anywhere with it Now the unit displays the same error it did when I sent it in ("SD Card File Error, remove battery and external power for 1 minute, if problem persists restore data using Sentinel All Clear") Then the unit shuts off after 5 seconds This is same whether you turn it on (no USB) or plugging in the USB It will NOT give the option for USB Mass Storage at this point Of course I did remove the batteries and external power several times for more than a minute but it did not help I also tried a new 16gb SD card, same message Uniden Tech say's; Its your computer! I said its the only one I have, he say's bummer, I said my computer is a one year old very robust I7 quad core PC running Windows 7, fully updated, and works with everything else I update on it, smart phones, GPS, book readers, blu ray player, MP3's,etc He said lets try this; uninstall Sentinel, download another (from Unidencom) Install it under a new user profile in Windows This also did not help I have fought with Tech Support to cross ship me a new one and finally had to go through a supervisor who agreed to have a new one sent out after I provided the Fed X tracking number showing this one was shipped (Uniden paid for the shipping) My major fear is will the new one act the same way, How do I REALLY get Sentinel to work with the HP2?, How do you keep Sentinel from corrupting the data on the SD card? Can I copy the files from the new Uniden SD card (before using Sentinel) to another SD card for a back up? 3 / 7

4 I have spoken to 4 or 5 different folks at Uniden and never got it to work The support people at Uniden are all very nice and worked hard with me to try to resolve it But now I am extremely gun shy of the HP2 and Sentinel working together Unfortunately I can't get my money back for the HP2 so Buyer Beware! 5 when there are no files that can be read from the SD card What will always get the scanner into mass storage mode when there are no files on the card, is to connect the scanner to the computer before attempting to turn the scanner on Once the scanner is connected to the computer, it will go right into the "Mass Storage" mode when you turn it on If you still aren't getting the mass storage mode at this point, several things could be happening: Either the SD card is still corrupted or not properly formatted The USB port you are using is bad(don't use a port on a hub), or the USB cable is bad Posted by HP2WI - 06 Jul :36 The HP2 will not go into Mass storage when I did what you suggested, I tried a different USB cable, and the USB 30 port directly on my PC I did previously use my USB hub Perhaps that is what corrupted the card? (nothing in the instructions about not using a USB hub) I sent it in to Uniden and they are sending me a new one I don't want this to happen again, so I will do what you said with the new one I followed the instructions the came with the unit and had the same issue both times Here is my main question; I have a new SanDisk 16GB SD Card with the same specs as the 4GB SanDisk that comes with the HP2,( class 10, HC 1) 5 / 7

6 Out of the box prior to turning the HP2 on, Can I copy the files from the SD card in the unit to my 16GB card as use it as a back up? I need to format the SD card on my PC to FAT32 in think? I have the SD Card Formatter program The reason for wanting to do this is; once the HP2 goes into the state of SD Card File Error; There is no way to recover it In both instances Uniden said I needed to send it in I WILL NOT wait 25 days to get it back every time Thanks for your help! I have the SD Card Formatter program Yes, before using the new HP you can even copy the SD card files to your computer's hard drive, and copy them over to a new card as needed SD card formatter will format the card correctly (new cards should already be formatted correctly) Just remember that if you do need to copy those files to a new SD card, they (database etc) will likely be outdated when you do that and you will need to update using Sentinel at that time You can even perform updates with the card in a SD card reader, and then put it into the HP and boot up The reason for wanting to do this is; once the HP2 goes into the state of SD Card File Error; There is no way to recover it 6 / 7

7 If your new HP ends up in the same state as your previous ones, you may want to investigate what is going on with your computer The HPs can definitely be recovered from that error I, and many others, have done it many times 7 / 7
