Intrductin: Abut Firmware Files, Naming, Versins, and Frmats The UT-4500-A Series Upcnverters and DT-4500-A Series Dwncnverters stre their firmware in flash memry, which allws the system t uplad firmware dwnlads frm an external PC nce Ethernet cnnectivity has been established. All Cmtech EF Data prducts are shipped cnfigured with the current versin firmware release. Firmware upgrades may be btained frm Cmtech EF Data via dwnlad frm the Internet t an external PC, via , r n CD. Cmtech EF Data s Web site catalgues its firmware upgrade files by prduct type (e.g., mdems, accessries, etc.) and specific mdel/ptinal cnfiguratin. Bth the UT-4500-A Series Upcnverters and DT-4500-A Series Dwncnverters (cllectively referred t thrughut the remainder f this dcument as the Cnverter ) emply the same firmware prduct. Sme firewalls will nt allw the dwnlading f *.exe files; in this case, dwnlad the *.zip file instead. If applicable, ne versin prir t the current release is als available fr dwnlad. 2 II. Getting Started: Preparing fr the Firmware Dwnlad 1 Identify the firmware number and versin fr dwnlad. Using the unit frnt panel, the current unit M&C versin can be viewed at the tp-level menu f the frnt panel display (press the [CLR] key several times t view). The firmware infrmatin can als be fund within the UTILITY FIRMWARE INFO IMAGE#1 r IMAGE#2 menu branches. Fr mre infrmatin, see Chapter 5. FRONT PANEL OPERATION. Using the 45xxA Web Server Interface, the firmware infrmatin can be fund n the CONFIG UTILITY page. Fr mre infrmatin, see Chapter 6. ETHERNET-BASED REMOTE PRODUCT MANAGEMENT. Using serial remte cntrl, the firmware revisin levels may be btained with the <1/FRM? query. Fr mre infrmatin, see Appendix A. REMOTE CONTROL. 2 Create a temprary flder (directry) n an external PC: Fr Windws Explrer: Select File > New > Flder t create a new flder, then rename it frm New Flder t "temp" r anther cnvenient, unused name. Assuming "temp" wrks, a "c:\temp" flder shuld nw be created. Nte: The drive letter c: is used in this example. Any valid writable drive letter can be used. Fr Windws Cmmand-line: Click [Start] n the Windws taskbar, then click the Run... icn (r, depending n Windws OS versins prir t Windws 95, click the MS-DOS Prmpt icn frm the Main Menu). Then, t pen a Cmmand-line windw Fr Windws 95 r Windws 98 Type cmmand. Fr any Windws OS versins later than Windws 98 Type cmd r cmmand. Alternately, frm [Start], select All Prgrams > Accessries > Cmmand Prmpt. At the Cmmand-line prmpt (c:\>), type mkdir temp r md temp (withut qutes mkdir and md stand fr make directry). This is the same as creating a new flder frm Windws Explrer. There shuld nw be a "c:\temp" subdirectry created (where c: is the drive letter used in this example). Dwnlading and Extracting the Firmware Update 1 Dwnlad the crrect firmware file t this temprary flder: a) G nline t: b) Click n: Supprt tab; c) Click n: Sftware Dwnlads drp-dwn r hyperlink frm Supprt page; d) Click n: Dwnlad Flash and Sftware Update Files icn; e) Click n: (Select a Prduct Line) Cnverters hyperlink; f) Click n: The UT-4500 Series r DT-4500 Series prduct hyperlink (either hyperlink cnnects t the same firmware dwnlad file page); g) Select the apprpriate prduct firmware hyperlink. The Cnverter firmware archive file hyperlink is F x_V### (where x dentes the revisin letter, and V### dentes the firmware versin number). The dwnladable files are stred in tw frmats: *.exe (self-extracting) and *.zip (cmpressed). Sme firewalls will nt allw the dwnlading f *.exe files. In this case, dwnlad the *.zip file instead. 2 Extract a minimum f tw files t the temprary flder n the PC: a) FW x.bin the bulk firmware file; b) ReleaseNtes_DT4500A_V###.pdf (r a similarly-titled file), where V### dentes the firmware versin number. 5 Cnfirm that the files have been extracted t the specified temprary flder n the PC. Using Cmmand-line, type cd c:\temp t change t the temprary directry created in Sect. II, 2, and then use type the dir cmmand t list the files extracted frm the dwnladed archive file. Perfrming the Ethernet FTP Uplad Prcedure 1 Cnnect the user PC t the Cnverter s 10/100 Ethernet M&C via a hub r a switch, r directly t the PC with a crssver cable. 2 Send a ping cmmand t the unit t verify the cnnectin and cmmunicatin: First, determine the IP address f the unit remtely r by using the Cnverter Frnt Panel: via Remte Cntrl Use the <1/IPA? cmmand via Frnt Panel Use the CONFIG REMOTE ETHERNET ADDRESS IP Address/Range menu. Then, using Cmmand-line t PING: At the Cmmand-line prmpt, type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the Management IP address f the Cnverter). The results shuld cnfirm whether r nt the unit is cnnected and cmmunicating. 3 Initiate an FTP sessin with the unit (this example uses Cmmand-line): a) Frm the PC, type "ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address f the Cnverter. b) Enter the Admin User Name (there will be n prmpt fr a passwrd) t cmplete lgin. c) Verify the FTP transfer is binary by typing "bin". d) Type "prmpt", then type "hash" t facilitate the file transfers. 4 Transfer the files frm the temprary flder n the PC: Type "put FW x.bin bulk: t begin the file transfers. The destinatin bulk: must be all lwercase. Apprximately ne minute is required t transfer the file. 5 Verify the file transfer: a) The PC shuld reprt that the file transfer has ccurred, and the display n the unit will start reprting Prgramming App Flash Please wait. After a few minutes, the unit will display Prgramming main FPGA Please wait. b) Terminate the FTP sessin by typing "bye" and clse the Cmmand-line windw. c) Cnfirm that the new file was laded by using the prcedure in 1. 5 6 Change the desired image t bt. Frm the Cnverter frnt panel menu: UTILITY FIRMWARE SELECT. Use the arrw keys t change t the ther image, then cycle pwer t rebt the unit. 7 Verify the new firmware versin has bted by bserving the firmware versin displayed n the Cnverter frnt panel, fr example: UT_ SW VER #.## SN######### Nte: T lad the secnd image, repeat s 3 thrugh 6 The Cnverter is nw perating with its latest firmware.
