4 Apple ipod ipod works well with Mac s and PC s s. (Probably much easier with Mac s s.) Most input is channeled through Apple s software called itunes. It can be downloaded for free. My goal is not to teach how to use all the menus on an ipod just want to show it s capability. There are now competitive products on the market, i.e. Microsoft s Zune, Sandisk s Sansa, etc. 4

5 The Apple ipod 30 GB Model It has a mini RCA Jack on top for output It has a special wheel to navigate through the menus It has a special connector on the bottom to input data from a computer All input must come from a computer. Mostly you Sync theipodwiththe itunes database. It contains a rechargeable battery that is charged via the special connector on the bottom connected to a USB port 5

6 Why Did I Get an ipod? I owned a JukeBox style CD player. It quit working. I looked on the internet for CD players. The selection is limited. My Son-in-Law said that I should put all my CD s on an ipod and use that to drive my home stereo system. I purchased an ipod and a docking station. Now my ipod drives my music. Also I began to learn about all the other things an ipod can do. 6

9 Copying your Music CD s onto the ipod Music was the main driver for selling the first ipods. I ll cover the music functions quickly so that we can focus on the full functionality. itunes is free software that you download from apple.com It organizes the database of music that you store on your computer. When you Rip a commercial CD into itunes, it compares the CD to Apple s online database and downloads the following information: Information on Artist, Composer, etc. Name of the individual songs Picture of the Album Cover Apple has a huge database of music so chances are good that your old CD s are there. If your CD is not in the online database you can still import it into itunes but it won t have as much info about the music. 9

10 Copying your Music CD s into itunes Open itunes, insert your music CD into your CD drive and itunes will read the CD and ask if you want to import the music to the itunes database. itunes lists all of the songs on the CD 10

11 Music on the ipod Once your music is downloaded into itunes on your computer, you create playlists for your music. Next you sync the ipod with itunes. The ipod will then display multiple ways to play your music, i.e. by album, genre, artist or by the playlists you created. I selected Playlist and have these options that I created. 11

13 Photos on the ipod You can store Photos os on your ipod and play them back on the small screen our output them to you TV as a slideshow. 13

14 Photos on the ipod Photos are displayed as thumbnails. You can select and review individual photos. itunes gives you the option to store the uncompressed version of the photos on the ipod for downloading to another computer. 14

15 Videos on the ipod You can store and playback your personal videos or commercial videos you download from itunes. The only movie I have stored is a 10 second clip that I took with my digital camera. 15

16 Extras on the ipod Set multiple clocks on the ipod for any time zone you wish. ipod Displays Time and Date for each time zone created. 16

17 Extras on the ipod You can download all of your contacts from Outlook or Outlook Express into the ipod. It s a great way to store information when you travel. 17

30 Closing Thoughts on Podcasts You don t need an ipod to download and play Podcasts. They are simply pymp3 files which will play on your Computer or a CD. The world of Podcasts is exploding on the internet. There is probably a Podcast for almost any topic you wish. The world of Video Podcasts is growing also with the availability of broadband. Libraries are joining the world of Podcasts by letting you download audio books, etc, that expire in 2-3 weeks. If we want to record our CAT sessions and post them on the web we would have a Podcast. Anyone can do it. It all started with a tiny ipod. 30
