ESD SAFETY! icracked likes to stay on the safe side of repairs, and by using ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) safe tools and equipment, you can be sure to avoid static damage to your mobile device. ESD damage is difficult to diagnose as its effect isn t usually immediately apparent, but sensitive sections of the logic board can nevertheless get weakened by static, and in turn become non-functional over time. Whether you are replacing a touch screen digitizer or an LCD screen, doing your repair with ESD safety in mind can save the long-term circuitry and functionality of your device.

WARNING! Take every care possible to NOT damage the home button/fingerprint scanner cable. The fingerprint ID scanner is locked to its original iphone, meaning this CAN NOT be replaced. The home button will function, but the fingerprint scan will never function again.

IMPORTANT! Before working on any ios device, make sure to test all of the functions that are described in the itech app. Power off the device before performing any repairs! If you have any questions before starting a repair, contact your itech manager or use the SOS button in the itech app.
REPAIR PREP Using a piece of paper (preferably a Post-it note) slid under each corner and down the left and right sides. If the paper slides under the corner, that area is damaged. It is highly recommended you decline this repair. If you proceed with this repair the customer must understand we will offer no warranty on the part used as it will become an issue in the future. Note: The most common area to be bent is at the Volume down button and the SIM card tray. Good Good Bad Corner Good
REPAIR PREP Use the itech application to complete the Pre-Repair checklist. This checklist must be completed and verified by the customer prior to starting the repair. The pre-repair checklist is your way of providing proof of what did or did not function prior to repair, which is why its so important to use the app and have the customer verify and sign. NOTE: An easy way to test the proximity sensor is activate voice control and start talking. If you place a finger over the ambient light sensor hole just above ear speaker grill, the screen should go dim.
REPAIR PREP Because the home button can only be used when the display assembly is installed, it s a good idea to turn on Assistive Touch before powering down the iphone. Enable Assistive Touch on your device: To enable Assistive Touch on your device: Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > Slide to ON.
POWER DOWN TO BEGIN Hold the power/sleep button down until slide to power off shows up on the screen. Slide the arrow from left to right. If the digitizer is not functioning: Power off the iphone by holding down both the power/sleep button and the home button. Continue holding down as the Apple logo appears until the screen goes black. If the power button does not function: Using assistive touch, touch the white bubble > Device > press and hold Lock Screen until the slide to power off drops down, and then slide the arrow from left to right.
1 Display Removal Remove the two 3.6mm Pentalobe screws next to the lightning port connector using a Pentalobe screwdriver. QTY MATERIAL mm Pentalobe screw
2 Opening Tool Place the iphone 5S into the iphone 5 series opening tool (isclack) or use a suction cup onto the screen like the original iphone 5. NOTE: If the screen is shattered, place 2 to 3 pieces of packing tape over the shattered glass to form a flat suction surface.
3 Lift Screen Squeeze the handles of the isclack tool to open. Remove the isclack from the iphone 5S by removing the suction cups from the glass and back of the frame.
IMPORTANT! The home button flex cable on the iphone 5S has a flex cable that is attached to the lightning port flex cable and covered in a protective cowling cover. Be EXTREMELY careful when lifting the display assembly. If you force the assembly above 1 ¼ you will tear this flex cable.
4 Angle the Screen GENTLY angle the iphone 5S screen to the right as shown.
5 Disconnect Cowling Cover The home button flex cable is held to the connector behind the lightning port and secured with a cowling cover. Disconnect the cowling cover using the pointed end of the nylon spudger by simply lifting up on the left corner of the bottom edge.
6 Cowling Cover The cowling cover will pop upward as shown.
7 Remove Cowling Cover Remove the top half of the cowling cover using tweezers.
8 Home Button Flex Cable Using the pointed end of the nylon spudger, disconnect the home button flex cable from the connector behind the lightning port.
9 Lift Display Assembly CAUTION: Do not try to completely remove the display assembly from the frame! There are three flex cables still attached to the top of the iphone, and removing the display assembly at this stage can destroy them. Once the clips have been released on the bottom and sides of the display assembly, lift the bottom of the display assembly away from the rear case until it forms a 90-degree angle.
10 Remove Screws NOTE: While disconnecting the battery, you will have to hold the display assembly upward with one hand, while removing the screws and retaining plate with the other hand. Locate the battery retaining plate and remove the two 1.6mm Phillips screws that hold the lower plate in place using a #00 Phillips screwdriver. QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screws
12 Disconnect Battery Connector CAUTION: Be careful to only pry up the battery connector and not to pry up the socket on the logic board. If you pry up on the logic board socket, you may break the connector entirely. Using the flat end of the nylon spudger, lift and disconnect the battery connector.
13 Inspect Battery Connector Inspect the battery connector to ensure there is no damage.
14 Remove Screws Remove the four Phillips screws securing the EMI shield to the logic board using a #00 Phillips screwdriver # QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screw mm Phillips screws mm Phillips screw Note: The upper right 1.6mm Phillips screw is non-magnetic.

21 Remove Speaker Retainer NOTE: The left side of the ear speaker retaining plate is hinged under the plastic of the display assembly. Using tweezers, remove the earpiece speaker retainer from the iphone by unclipping the right side. Fold upward as the left side is hinged in.
22 Remove Ear Speaker Remove the ear speaker and set aside for re-installation.
23 Unseat Ambient Light Sensor NOTE: The flex cable is held in with adhesive. CAREFULLY heat this area with low temperature hot air, if needed. The ambient light sensor is folded underneath the ear speaker. CAREFULLY insert the pointed end of the nylon spudger, as indicated by the arrow, to peel the flex cable off the plastic. Then gently lift the cable upward and unseat the proximity sensor.
24 Unplug Microphone NOTE: The front-facing camera/ accessory flex cable is grounded to the LCD thermal plate with a piece of copper shielding tape. You do not need to peel this off. Leave the flex cable attached to the copper shielding tape. Unplug the upper microphone from its housing using tweezers.
25 Remove Ambient Light Sensor Block Remove the rubber ambient light sensor alignment block and set aside.
IMPORTANT! Only the black display assembly has a white filter under the ambient light sensor which must be transferred to the replacement display assembly.
26 Remove Screw NOTE: There is a grounding tab attached to the underside of the home button flex cable. Hold it in place with tweezers. If the tab is not held, you risk damaging the home button flex cable. Remove the single Phillips head screw holding the home button flex cable in place.
27 Grounding Tab The grounding tab should remain on the flex cable. There is a small flat washer that keeps the screw held in place.
28 Remove Screws Remove the two 1.3mm Phillips screws securing the home button retaining plate to the display assembly using a #00 Phillips screwdriver. QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screws
29 Remove Home Button Flex Cable Use the rounded end of the metal spudger to CAREFULLY peel off the home button flex cable exactly as shown. NOTE: Do not pull the cable. It will tear! WARNING: If the home button flex cable is damaged the finger print scan will NEVER work again. There is an IC that digitally locks the fingerprint scanner to an individual iphone.
30 Home Button NOTE: The home button is held in with a rubber skirt attached with adhesive. Using the flat end of the nylon spudger, press the home button out from the top side of the display assembly.
31 Remove Home Button Remove the home button assembly and set aside.
32 Remove Screws Remove two 1.2 mm Phillips screws from each side of the LCD retaining plate (four total), using a #00 Phillip screwdriver.
33 Remove Screw Remove the single Phillips screw using a #00 screwdriver. QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screw
34 Remove LCD Thermal Plate Remove the LCD thermal plate out and set it aside to install on the new display assembly.
REASSEMBLY PREP Remove the anti-static protective film covering the back side of the LCD.

38 Insert Screws Set the home button metal plate on top of the home button. Insert and tighten the two 1.3mm Phillips screws. QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screw
39 Home Button Flex Cable Fold the home button flex cable over and tighten the single Phillips head screw attached to flex cable. Make sure the grounding tab is aligned horizontally to the iphone. Make sure the flex cable is aligned on the lower alignment pin.
IMPORTANT! Make sure the ambient light sensor filter and the rubber alignment block is properly installed.
40 Upper Microphone Tube When re-assembling the front facing camera/proximity sensor cable, ensure that the upper microphone tube is fully inserted in its housing.
41 Ambient Light Sensor Filter Verify that the ambient light sensor filter and rubber alignment block is installed. NOTE: The white proximity sensor sticker is only on the black display assemblies.
IMPORTANT! Front-Facing Camera Center Ring Ambient Light Sensor White Sticker *Black Display Only Ambient Light Sensor Block Proximity Sensor Alignment Block Ear Speaker Hole
42 Insert Front-Facing Camera This may take a few attempts to get all the components seated correctly. 63 45 Install Screws Install and tighten the two Phillips head screws to hold the ear speaker metal retaining clip on. 2. # QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screw mm Phillips screws 1.
46 Transfer Foams If the foam pads on the digitizer, LCD, and frontfacing camera assembly cables are not pre-installed, transfer the foam(s) from the original display assembly to the new display assembly.
47 Fold Cables Forward Pre-fold all three cables by first placing a fingertip at the base of the flex cables nearest the LCD as shown. While holding this position, use your other hand to gently fold all three cables (the digitizer flex cable, LCD flex cable and the front-facing camera cable) over the fingertip. This should start to make a small crease in the middle of the flex cables.
48 Fold Cables Back Carefully remove your fingertip while keeping the base of all three cables in that position, flat against the inside of the screen. Continue pressing down against the thermal plate to create a clear crease in the cables.
49 Seat Three Cables Hold the screen perpendicular to the frame near the top of the device. With one finger keep the flex cables pressed against the glass and with your other hand align and connect the digitizer flex cable, LCD flex cable and the front-facing camera cable to the logic board. Note: This may take several attempts until you re familiar with the method. Keeping the flex cables against the glass prevents excessive pull and damage on the cables.
50 Insert EMI Shield Place the EMI shield over the flex cables. Insert and tighten the four Phillips screws with a #00 Phillips screwdriver. 1. # QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screw mm Phillips screws mm (non-magnetic) Phillips screw
51 Connect Battery NOTE: This will be performed with the dominant hand while the other is holding the LCD up at a 90-degree angle to the phone. Connect the battery and install the battery retaining clip. Tighten the two Phillips screws securing the battery connector in place using a #00 Phillips screwdriver. QTY MATERIAL mm Phillips screw
52 Do Not Close iphone Yet Lay the display assembly down. Power on the iphone, and test the display, touch screen, front camera, and the proximity sensor. NOTE: The home button contacts are part of the lightning port flex cable assembly. The home button cannot be tested until the home button flex cable is connected.
53 Angle the Screen Angle the bottom of the screen GENTLY again to the right. Connect the male home button flex cable connector to the female connector behind the lightning port.
54 Align Slots On the back of the cowling cover are two slots cut into the metal. Align those onto the corresponding male ends.
55 Lock Cowling Cover Press the tab down into place to lock the cowling cover over the home button flex cable.
IMPORTANT! If all tests are satisfactory, go ahead and close the iphone. The display assembly has three tabs that must be aligned and inserted into the frame as shown below.
56 Lower Display Assembly Lower the top of the display assembly at about a 20-degree angle into the slots cut into the frame.
57 Home Button Flex Cable Make sure the home button flex cable is folding toward the right side as shown.
58 Check Display Assembly Lower the display assembly into place and run your fingers down the sides to ensure the LCD clips get seated properly.
59 Install Screws Re-install the two Pentalobe screws next to the lightning port plug using a Pentalobe screwdriver. QTY MATERIAL mm Pentalobe screw
