3 Navigating Your Kindle Fire 1st Generation Learn how to navigate your Kindle Fire, including the onscreen keyboard. Speakers: The top edge of your Kindle contains stereo speakers to listen to music, movies, audiobooks, and more on your Kindle. Headphone jack: Plug in headphones to listen to audio content on your Kindle. Attaching headphones turns off the built-in speakers. USB/power port: Use for charging your Kindle and connecting it to your computer. Learn more about charging your Kindle. You can also use the USB port to transfer content between your computer and your Kindle. Power button: To turn on your Kindle, press the power button. Press and swipe the orange ribbon to the left to start using your Kindle Fire. To put your Kindle in sleep mode, press and release the power button. If you need to turn off the Kindle completely, such as when traveling on an airplane, press and hold the power button for seven seconds until the screen goes blank. If your Kindle does not power on or is unresponsive during use, you can do a hard restart by pressing and holding the power button for 40 seconds. The power button has a charge indicator light that is orange when your Kindle is charging and will turn off when the battery is fully charged. Touchscreen Actions Swipe: Swipe your finger across the screen to turn pages, or scroll up or down within a screen. Tap: Tap to select buttons or text, and to enter your selections using the onscreen keyboard Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 3
4 Turning pages: Tap the left side of the screen to return to the previous page in your reading material. Tap the right side of the screen to continue to the next page in your reading material. Zooming in on images: Use your thumb and index finger expand an image, or to pinch it to a smaller size. Status Bar The Status Bar is located at the top of the screen and displays notifications, the time, the Quick Settings icon, Wi-Fi indicator, and battery indicator. Icon Description Notifications: Messages generated by games and applications. You can select a sound to alert you of incoming notifications in Settings. Quick Settings: Select to display settings for the most commonly performed tasks including, locking and unlocking screen rotation, adjusting volume, setting display brightness, accessing Wi-Fi settings, and syncing. Wi-Fi Indicator: The number of bands represents the strength of the Wi-Fi signal at your current location. Battery Indicator: The degree to which the battery is filled represents the remaining charge in the battery. Tap the Quick Settings icon for more options. Locked/Unlocked: Tap to lock or unlock the screen rotation on your Kindle Fire. You can lock the screen to keep it from rotating when you tilt the device, such as when you are laying down and don't want the screen to rotate. Volume: Tap to adjust main volume for your Kindle Fire. Additional volume settings are available when watching a video, listening to music, and other activities. Brightness: Tap to adjust screen brightness. Wi-Fi: Tap to connect your Kindle Fire to Wi-Fi and other wireless connection settings. Sync: Tap to check for new content and sync your current content. More: Tap the More icon to bring up additional Kindle Fire Settings Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 4
5 Options Bar Additional settings are located in the Options bar at the bottom of the screen and bring up additional actions or settings, depending upon the content library or application. For example, within the Music library, tap the bottom of the screen to display Downloads, Settings, and Help options. Standard options include: Home: Tap the Home button from anywhere on your Kindle Fire to return to the Home screen. Back: Use this button to retrace your steps. Menu: Select Menu to view additional options related to the content type. Search: Tap this button to search your Content library. The Options bar may be hidden when some applications are running. It can be expanded by tapping the arrow at the bottom of the screen or by swiping upward from the bottom of the device. Using the Onscreen Keyboard Kindle Fire uses an onscreen keyboard. When you tap within the search window at the top of the Home screen or begin other actions that require you to type in information, you'll see the onscreen keyboard displayed on the screen. Touch the keys to enter your selection, and use the onscreen buttons to continue on to the next action. Tap the 123!? key to enter numbers or symbols. Tap the ABC key to return to the regular keyboard. Tap the Shift key (up arrow) for uppercase letters. Your Carousel, Favorites, and Content Libraries You can press the Home icon at any time to return to the Home screen Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 5
6 Your Home screen carousel displays your content in a carousel view. To advance the carousel, swipe your finger across the screen. The most recently accessed items appear first. Newly purchased items are marked with a "New" badge. "Bookmark" badges show what percentage of the book you have read. You can remove an item from your carousel by tapping and holding on the item, then selecting Remove from Carousel. Favorites Swipe down to view your Favorites, located below the carousel. Tap and hold to drag an item from your carousel to your Favorites, or tap and hold an item to display the context menu and select Add to Favorites. Favorites will still appear in the library for that content type. To remove an item from Favorites, tap and hold the item to display the context menu and select Remove from Favorites. Content libraries The navigation bar at the top of the screen displays available content libraries on your Kindle Fire. Tap the content library name to see all the available content within your Newsstand, Books, Music, Video, Docs, or Apps libraries. To select an item, simply tap it. For example, tap a book name on your Home screen to open the book or tap an application to start it. Tap the left or right side of the screen to turn pages in a book Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 6
