1 Nexus 9 11/02/2015 Martyn 1 Installation 1.1 Preparation The Nexus 9 runs Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and requires a Google account which in turn requires an address. Create an Outlook address ( such as tab1.tech4d@outlook.com and then use this when you create a Google account ( with a personal name such as the dummy one TabOne TechFord. Notice that you cannot use numbers in the name, only alphabetic letters. 1.2 Turn on the Nexus 9 for the first time The battery may not be fully charged at first. It s a good idea to fully charge the battery as soon as you get a chance. To charge and turn on your device, follow these steps: Connect the small end of the micro USB cable to the micro USB port on the bottom of the tablet, when viewed from the front. Then connect the other end to the charging unit and the charging unit to a power outlet. To turn the tablet on, press the power button on the right side for a few seconds. You see the welcome screen, so scroll down one to select English (United Kingdom), press the yellow button and you will see the list of WiFi signals. Touch the one you want and it will ask for the WiFi password. Nexus 9 revision 2 Technology for the Disabled 2015 Page 1 of 15

2 The keyboard will appear when you touch the password field so you can type the password. It may take a short while to connect to the internet. Once connected, it detects it needs to update it s software. Touch the Next button and it downloads the software for some minutes and then reboots itself. Once rebooted it asks you to sign into your Google account, so we can use the one we set up beforehand in preparation. Sign in by entering the address that we set up beforehand and then used to create our Google account. The onscreen keyboard appears to let us do this and then allows us to type in the Google account password. Nexus 9 revision 2 Technology for the Disabled 2015 Page 2 of 15

3 It asks if we want to add a credit card, but we select Remind me later and touch the Next button. It then asks about Google services, so we just leave the defaults and touch Next. When it asks about Google Now we touch No thanks and then the Next button. At last, we have the welcome banner on the desktop, but there is a system alert at the top, saying there is another update to install. Touch the INSTALL button and it gives details on the update so simply touch Restart & install. Nexus 9 revision 2 Technology for the Disabled 2015 Page 3 of 15

4 Finally, after rebooting, everything is finished and we see the login screen. Note the round, turquoise User icon top right which allows different users to log in. Currently we only have the one, default Google account user TabOne. Log in by simply swiping in the middle of the screen and it shows the Home screen which is the equivalent of the Windows desktop. Every Home screen shows the Favourites tray it's a quick way to get to your apps. At the bottom of every screen, no matter what you're doing, you'll always find three navigation buttons. If you don't use these buttons often, they may shrink to dots or fade away, depending on the current app. To bring them back, touch their location on your device. Back: Opens the previous screen that you were working in, even if it was in a different app. Once you go back up to the Home screen, you can't go back any further in your history. Home: Opens Home. If you re viewing a left-hand or right-hand Home screen, opens the central Home screen. To open Google Now, swipe up. Overview: Opens a list of thumbnail images of apps and Chrome tabs that you ve worked with recently. To open an app, touch it. To remove a thumbnail from the list, swipe it left or right. On the All Apps screen available from the Favourites tray, notice the Settings icon. This brings you to the Settings screens for your device, where you can adjust things like network, sound and account settings, among many others. You can search the Settings app to find what you need quickly. Simply touch the search icon at the top of the screen and type in your search term. You can use Quick Settings to easily access Wi-Fi settings, change display brightness, and more. To open Quick Settings, swipe down from the top or top-right corner of any screen. At the top of the screen you'll find Google Search, which lets you search your phone or the Internet. Touch Google to type your search terms, or the Microphone icon to speak them. You can also say "OK Google" and your query on any Home screen to activate a voice search or perform an action. Many screens in apps and settings include a Menu icon.
