6 Assignment 8: Abut Strage Devices If the cmputer culd nt stre data, each time yu turned the cmputer ff, yu wuld lse everything. Yu wuld nt be able t install any prgrams r save yur wrk. The cmputer uses different strage devices t stre data. Read the infrmatin t learn abut flppy disks, CDs, DVDs, flash drives, and hard disks. In the next assignment, yu will add slides t the infrmatin package that explains strage devices t custmers. Strage Mediums Strage Devices Sessin 2 Over the years, the technlgy used t stre infrmatin has changed dramatically. The strage mediums used tday are faster, have a larger capacity, are mre durable, and in many cases are mre prtable, than thse used in the past. Each strage medium has a surface that stres infrmatin. This surface is divided int small sectins that are used t stre data. The reasn a strage medium is divided int sectins is s the cmputer knws where t lk fr the infrmatin stred n the disk. sectr tracks A disk is divided int sectrs that are shaped like wedges. Data is stred in each sectr. There are different types f strage mediums used t stre data. Often the type used depends n the purpse. Fr example, there are flppy disks, CDs, DVDs, flash memry, and the hard disk. Flppy disk Many years ag, a flppy disk was used fr data strage. A flppy disk is a remvable disk that stres infrmatin magnetically using a flppy disk drive. The flppy disk used t stre up t 1.44 MB f infrmatin. Since this is nt very much, the flppy disk is nw rarely used by peple. In fact, mst cmputers tday d nt cntain a flppy drive. Despite nt being used anymre, the flppy disk remains the symbl used in mst prgrams fr the Save tl. 1. Des yur cmputer have a flppy disk drive? 2. D yu use a flppy disk drive t stre infrmatin? 7 CD and DVD CD is a shrt frm fr cmpact disc and DVD is a shrt frm fr digital versatile disc. Bth are rund strage devices that are abut 4.75 inches (12 cm) in diameter. They are cmmnly used t stre sftware prgrams, music files, and mvies. As well, they can be used t save a back up f imprtant data files. Hw is infrmatin read and written t a CD? Data n a CD r DVD is read and written using an ptical drive. Once a CD r DVD is inserted int an ptical drive, a mtr starts t spin the disc. A laser scans the surface lking fr changes in light. It is the lightness r darkness f the surface that tells the cmputer abut the data that is stred n the disc. Bth a CD and DVD are made ut f plastic. Infrmatin is added r written t the disc with a laser that heats the surface. This is why creating a disc is called burning. Infrmatin is stred in a track that is in the shape f a spiral. The track ges frm the center f the disc t the uter edge. Strage Devices Sessin 2 Is burner speed imprtant? CD and DVD ptical drives are rated based n burning speed. The burning speed is hw many times faster the drive spins the CD r DVD when burning data t the strage medium than when it is just reading a CD r DVD. Reading a CD r DVD is 1x. Therefre, a burning speed f 16x means that the ptical drive is spinning the CD r DVD 16 times faster than nrmal. A faster burning speed is preferred. Hwever, t avid errrs, it is ften a gd idea t burn a CD r DVD at a speed slwer than the maximum rate. Why des a DVD hld mre data than a CD? Althugh a CD and DVD lk the same, each device can hld different amunts f data. Fr example, a CD can hld 650 MB f data, whereas a DVD can stre 4 GB. Data n a CD r DVD is stred in tracks. In the case f a DVD, the tracks are thinner than n a CD, which means mre infrmatin can be burned nt the same size surface. Why are there different types f CDs and DVDs? There are several types f CDs and DVDs. Sme CDs and DVDs are designed s that yu can lk at the infrmatin n the disc, but yu cannt edit, add, r delete files. Others are designed s yu can add data but afterwards the data is permanent and cannt be edited r deleted. Still thers can add, edit, and delete files repeatedly. CD-ROM and DVD-ROM: ROM stands fr read nly memry. Infrmatin n the disc is permanent and cannt be added, edited, r deleted. This methd f data strage is used fr sftware, audi CDs purchased frm a stre, r a mvie that yu rent. CD-R and DVD-R: R that stands fr recrdable. Infrmatin n the disc can be added, but nce n the disc it is permanent. This type f disc is gd if yu want t burn data and then never change the cntent. Fr example, if yu were making a custm music CD, vide f a family trip, r back up f imprtant data files yu wuld use a CD-R r DVD-R. CD-RW and DVD-RW: RW stands fr recrdable and writeable. 8 Flash Memry Flash memry is a cmputer chip that is used t stre infrmatin. Flash memry is cmmnly used in cameras, fax machines, and ther electrnic devices t save phts, music, user settings, r ther data. Flash memry chips are als used in a strage device called a flash drive r USB drive. A flash drive is a small device the size f a thumb. A flash drive cntains a flash memry chip that is used t stre data. The flash memry chip is prtected by a small plastic case. The plastic case has a USB slt at the tp that is used t plug the flash drive int the USB prt n a cmputer. Infrmatin can then easily be read r written t the flash drive. Since the device is plugged int the USB slt, it is smetimes called a USB drive. String data happens in a flash! Data n a flash drive is added r erased with electrnic pulses. Flash memry has a grid f clumns and rws that divide the surface int blcks that can be erased r written t withut affecting the ther areas. Flash memry ffers a quick methd f data strage, because the infrmatin is erased ne blck at a time, instead f ne byte at a time. Strage Devices Sessin 2 The use f the flash drive cntinues t grw in ppularity. This is likely because it is an affrdable prtable device that can hld lts f infrmatin. Yu can purchase a flash drive that hlds 1GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB r mre! It is easy t see why mre and mre peple are using it t stre files instead f using a CD r DVD. 4. 9 Hard Disks A hard disk r hard drive is a strage medium used t stre prgrams, user settings, and files. Hard disks were invented in the 1950s. They started as large disks up t 20 inches in diameter hlding just a few megabytes. Tday, they are the size f yur hand and can hld ne terabyte f data. Nearly every desktp cmputer and server in use tday cntains ne r mre hard disks. Every mainframe and supercmputer is nrmally cnnected t hundreds f them. The hard disk is used t stre digital infrmatin in a relatively permanent frm. They give cmputers the ability t remember things when the pwer ges ut. Hard disks have an aluminum r glass disk that is layered with a magnetic recrding material. Infrmatin is read and written t the disk using read/write heads. Strage Devices Sessin 2 Hw des a hard drive wrk? When the cmputer requests infrmatin the circuit bard inside the hard drive bx, tells a mtr t spin, which causes the hard disk r platter t turn. A mechanism mves an arm that hlds the read/write heads. The arm mves quickly frm the center f the disk called the hub t the uter edge f the platter t lcate the infrmatin in the prper sectr. Once the infrmatin is fund, the read/write heads send the infrmatin t the circuit bard, which then relays it t the cmputer, r mre specifically, the CPU. This all happens withut the read/write heads ever tuching the platter. Instead, they rest directly ver the platter. Hard disks have dramatically increased their strage capacity ver the years, althugh the verall design has changed very little. Hw is this pssible? The difference between hard disks frm the past and tday are the size f the heads. Since the heads are made tinier, it is pssible t divide the platter int smaller sectrs. The mre sectrs, the mre data strage. Year: GB Year: GB There are three ways t measure the perfrmance f a hard disk: Strage Capacity: amunt f bytes f data the hard disk can stre Data Rate: number f bytes per secnd that the drive can deliver t the CPU Seek Time: amunt f time it takes between the time that the CPU requests a file and the first byte f the file starts being sent t the CPU 7. Fr each device, yu will explain the purpse, ffer recmmendatins abut purchasing, and include a picture. Open Infrmatin Package in Micrsft PwerPint Open Micrsft PwerPint. Click the Office Buttn and select Open. Strage Devices Sessin 2 G t the place where yu saved yur wrk. Select the cmpany name file and then click Open. View Slide 2 T mve t Slide 2 press the PAGE DOWN key n the keybard r click Slide 2 in the Outline pane. Create a Slide Explaining the Purpse f Strage Devices On the Hme tab, click the New Slide arrw. Select Title and Cntent frm the gallery. In the Click t add title placehlder, type Abut Strage Devices. In the Click t add text placehlder, answer the questin, "Why des a cmputer need strage devices?". Press ENTER. Type There are several types f strage devices including: Press ENTER. Click n a clip art in the pane t add it t the slide. Make a slide fr each strage device. Include a clip art f each device n the slide. 14 Assignment 11: Infrmatin Package and Cmparisn Chart Yu will create a table that cmpares the strage capacity f a flppy disk, CD, DVD, flash drive, and hard drive. Open Infrmatin Package in Micrsft PwerPint Open Micrsft PwerPint. Click the File tab and select Open. G t the place where yu saved yur wrk. Select the cmpany name file and then click Open. Strage Devices Sessin 2 View the Last Slide T mve t the last slide use the PAGE DOWN key n the keybard r click the last slide in the Outline pane. Insert a Table fr the Cmparisn Chart Yu will insert a table nt the slide. It will have tw clumns and six rws. On the Hme tab, click the New Slide arrw. Select Title and Cntent frm the gallery. In the Click t add title placehlder type Cmparisn f Strage Capacity. Click Insert Table n the placehlder. Type in the number f clumns and rws fr the table. 15 Apply a Style t the Table Yu can change the style f the table. Pick a style frm the gallery. Pick a Style On the Table Tls Design tab find the Table Styles grup. Click the Mre arrw t see mre designs. Mre Click n a style yu like. Strage Devices Sessin 2 Change the Shading, Brderlines, and Effects Yu can custmize the table by changing the shading clr, brderlines, and effects. Select the table. Click inside a cell r click and drag the muse t select a rw r clumn. On the Table Tls Design tab, find the Table Styles grup. Try the fllwing cmmands t change the way the table lks. After using each cmmand, put a checkmark in the bx. Fill a cell with a clr, gradient, texture, r picture. Apply brderlines t each cell. Add an effect t the table such as a cell bevel, shadw, r reflectin. Use yur skills t frmat the table. Yu can edit the brderline clr, line style, and width using the cmmands in the Draw Brders grup n the Table Tls Design tab. T exit Draw Brders, click Draw Table. TECHNOSpecialist 50

16 Resize the Table Yu need t resize the table t make if fill the slide. When yu resize the table, the height f each cell is adjusted, t make each the same height. Place the muse pinter ver the bttm sizing handle. Click and drag dwnwards t make the table larger. Strage Devices Sessin 2 Add Table Headings t the Tp Rw Yu need t add the headings Strage Device and Strage Capacity t the tp rw f the table. Yu will then change the alignment f the cells t make the headings lk great. Click inside the tp left cell. Type Strage Device. Press TAB. Type Strage Capacity. Place the muse pinter beside the tp rw. When the muse pinter changes t a black arrw, click the muse t select the rw. Click the Table Tls Layut tab, find the Alignment grup. Try each cmmand t change the alignment f the wrds in the cell. After using the cmmand put a checkmark in the bx. Align the wrds t the left side f the cell. Align the wrds in between the left and right side f the cell. Align the wrds t the right side f the cell. In the LEFT clumn under the Strage Device heading add: Flppy Disk CD DVD Flash Drive Hard Drive In the RIGHT clumn under the Strage Capacity heading, add the amunt f infrmatin stred by each device. Use yur skills t change the alignment f the wrds in the cells. Strage Devices Sessin 2 Yu can resize the width f clumns. Place the muse pinter ver the center brderline. When it changes t a tw-way arrw, click and drag t the left r right. Cmplete the Strage Device Cmparisn Slide Use yur skills t finish the slide.
