2 Edit Range and Functions The MPEG Edit Studio contains multiple windows for a variety of edit functions as shown in the figure below. Fig. Windows provided for edit functions

3 Button Bar Allows easy access to basic functions like, "Add MPEG file" or "New Project" just by clicking it with the mouse. Fig. Button Bar Status Bar Timeline display mode shows either "Drop Frame Mode" or "Non-drop Frame Mode". It only functions when the project curr ently in operation has a frame rate of 29.97[fps]. Bin Window A window for registering movie clips for editing. Editing starts after registering the movie cl ip in the Bin window. To use the Bin window, click the Bin window or select "Bin" on the "Window" menu. Monitor Window Performs high speed play in the movie clip forward or reverse sequence, or play with

4 sophisticated functions such as frame feed or frame reverse. The movie clip for editing can also be trimmed in the Monitor window. To use the Monitor window, click the window you want to use or select "Monitor" on the "Window" menu, and then the "Monitor [Monitor No.] ([shortcut No.]). To open a new "Monitor" window, select "Monitor" on the "Window" menu and then select "Open Monitor". To close the current "Monitor" window, select "Monitor" on the "Window" menu and then "Close Current Monitor". Here, "current monitor" is the monitor shown at the top of "Monitor" on the "Window" menu and its shortcut No. is "1". Summarizer Window This includes a "Temporal Browser" for displaying each movie clip for a fixed period. To use the "Summarizer" click the "Summarizer" window you want to operate or select "Summarizer" on the "Window" menu, and then select "Summarizer [Summarizer No.] ([Shortcut No.])". To open a new "Summarizer" window, select "Summarizer" on the "Window" menu and then select "Open New Summarizer". To close the current "Summarizer" window, select "Summarizer" on the "Window" menu and then select "Close Current Summarizer". Here, "current summarizer" is the summarizer shown at the top of "Summarizer" on the "Window" menu and its shortcut No. is "1". Timeline Window Window for the actual editing of the movie clip. Allows making various settings such as movie clip trimming, splicing, setting video/audio effects, and audio level editing. A preview function allows checking ahead of time, how the movie clip will look after the editing. To use the "Timeline" window, click the "Timeline" window or select "Timeline" on the "Window" menu.

5 Edit Spooler Window Window for checking the edit-output stream status. Also can set the edit pause or operation priority level for application software. Not shown on the default. This window closes when other windows are used. Placing the Default Window To position the default window, select "Default Position" on the "Window" menu. Setting the Edit Function Use one of the following two methods to make edit function settings. a) Select "Configuration" on the "File" menu. Fig. "Configuration" dialog You can use the "Configuration" dialog, to customize edit settings to fit your own needs. Items you can set are shown in the table below. In order to restore the default setting on installation after customizing the "Configuration", click "Default" first, and then click "OK". Table: Customizable Settings

Selecting "Search for Help on " instead of "Contents" will display a "Help ics" dialog box allowing a search of keywords.

12 Switching Projects When more than 1 project is selected, these are shown on the pull-down menu to the right of the "Button Bar" as shown in the figure below. To switch to a project, select it from the pull-down menu. 13 Saving the Project Use any of the following three methods to save the project. a) Select "Save" on the "File" menu. Fig. "Save Project" and "Save All" button The "Save Project" is enabled when the currently active project has been edited (rewritten). The "Save All" is enabled when there are edited projects among multiple opened projects. Using Auto Save To use auto save, select "Configuration" on the "File" menu or click the "Configuration" button on the "Button Bar".

15 Fig. Using "Configuration" for auto save The "Configuration" dialog box appears so set the auto save interval by placing a checkmark in the "Interval of Auto Save" check box. No check mark is placed in the "Interval of Auto Save" check box prior to shipment. is Auto save can be set in intervals ranging from 0 to 60. However, if the auto save interval set to 0, the auto save function is inoperative even if its box is checked. Changing the Default Save Folder To change the default save folder, select "Configuration" on the "File" menu or click the "Configuration" button on the "Button Bar".

16 Fig. Changing the default save folder using "Configuration" The "Configuration" dialog box appears so enter an optional folder name in "Default Save Folder" or click the "Browse" button and set the desired folder from the "Browse for Folder" dialog. The default save folder is set to login user s "My Documents" prior to shipping. Changing the Temporal Folder To change the temporal folder, select "Configuration" on the "File" menu or click the "Configuration" button on the "Button Bar".

17 Fig. Changing the temporal folder using "Configuration" The "Configuration" dialog box appears so enter an optional folder name in "Temporal Folder" or click the "Browse" button and set the desired folder from the "Browse for Folder" dialog. In the default settings, it will be a "Temp" folder directly under the program folder where the application is installed. If a hard disk drive where the temporal folder is set has enough disk space, it is not necessary to modify the setting value. If a hard disk drive does not have enough space, a temporal file cannot be stored and editing operation may not be possible. * Temporal folder is a folder where a temporally created file is stored during creating an edited stream.

18 Adding the MPEG Stream to Bin Use any of the following four methods to add the MPEG stream to bin. a) In the Bin window, select, "Add MPEG File" on the right mouse button menu. 19 Selecting a) b) or c) makes the "MPEG Stream" dialog box appear so select the desired MPEG file. Selecting an MPEG file allows using preview and viewing the MPEG file in detail. File Status Message Detail Information Fig. "MPEG Stream" dialog On viewing the file in detail, information on the selected MPEG file is displayed. If a file other than an MPEG file is selected, the following message appears. This file is not MPEG file. Messages to okay or reject the addition appear as shown in the table below.

20 Table: MPEG file addition okay/reject list d) Drag-and-drop the MPEG file from explorer to the "Bin" window. However, wh ether the MPEG file can be added depends on the MPEG file first added to the new project. Conditions for adding it are shown in the table below. This project s condition is not changed even if all MPEG files are deleted from the Adding the MPEG Stream as a Complete Folder to the Bin Use either of the following two methods to add the MPEG stream in a complete folder to the bin. a) In the Bin window, select "Add Folder" from the right mouse button menu.

Fig. Adding the folder from the "Bin" menu The "Browse for Folder" dialog box appears, and when you select the folder you want to add, all MPEG files within that folder are automatically searched. According to the "MPEG file types that can be added" table, a check dialog box next appears if the types are different, and the MPEG file is added to the bin. Changing the Movie Clip Display Method There are three methods for showing the "Bin" window movie clip. These three methods are the "Poster Frame Display" "Memo Display" and the "Clip Name Display".

Fig. Changing with the "Switch Display" button Arranging the Movie Clip Use either of the following two methods to arrange the movie clip. a) Right-click a point where there is no "Bin" window movie clip, and select "Replace".

When you select "Replace", the movie clips in the "Bin" window are arranged in order of higher movie clip name, according to the grid spacing in configuration (system settings). To set the grid spacing, see "Changing the grid width". Writing Memos in the Movie Clips To write a memo in the movie clip, on the "Memo Display" first change to the movie clip you want to write the memo on.

Fig. Displaying the movie clip menu When "Memo Display" is called up, a memo can be entered on the right side of the movie clip. The memo you wrote is automatically stored when the project is saved. Changing the Grid Width To change the g rid width, first of all select "Configuration" on the "File" menu or click the "Configuration" button on the "Button Bar".

26 Fig. Changing grid width from "Configuration" A "Configuration" dialog appears so change the grid width on "Grid Interval in Bin". The default grid spacing is 10 dots. The set table range is from 1 to 100 dots. Changing the Movie Clip Poster Frame To change the poster frame of the movie clip, first of all, register the movie clip you want to change onto the "Monitor" window. See "Adding a movie clip to the monitor" for methods to register the movie clip in the "Monitor" window.

27 Before setting the poster frame, select with a marker, the frame you want to set in the poster frame in the "Monitor" window. After selecting the frame, use either of the following two methods to set the poster frame. a) Click the "Poster Frame" button on the "Monitor" window. 28 Fig. Setting a poster frame using the "Monitor" menu After finishing a) or b), the poster frame of the movie clip inside the "Bin" window is changed to the specified frame position. Also, the "Poster Frame" icon is moved to the specified frame position on the poster frame in the "Monitor" window. 29 Adding a Movie Clip to the Monitor Any of the followin g five methods can be used to add a movie clip to the monitor. a) Drag-and-drop the movie clip from the "Bin" window, or "Temporal Browser", onto the "Monitor" window. 32 on the monitor. a) Click "V" on the history drop-down list at the upper part of the "Monitor" window and select the desired movie clip. 33 Deleting the History of the Movie Clip Registered on the Monitor Use either of the following two methods to delete a movie clip history registered on the monitor. a) First, switch to the movie clip history you want to delete. See "Switching among Multiple Movie Clips Registered in the Monitor" for information on switching histories. Next, on the monitor, select "Delete from History" with the right mouse button menu. 34 Fig. Deleting a history with the "Monitor" menu Switching the Monitor Size To change the monitor size, show the right mouse button menu on the monitor, and select, "Set Default Size" or select "Set MPEG Original Size". 35 Set MPEG Original Size (MPEG material) Sets the size of the "Monitor" window as the basic size of the movie clip registered on the current monitor. You can also change the window to an optional size by dragging the edge of the monitor. Play Use either of the following three methods to play the movie clip. a) Click the "Play" button. Fig. "Play" button b) Drag the Shuttle bar slider to the play icon position. Fig. Play with the shuttle bar c) Select "Play" on the "Monitor" menu.

The "Repeat" button is shown highlighted when turned on. The "Repeat" button is off when the MPEG Edit Studio Pro starts up. Frame Forward - Backward Use either of the following two methods for frame forward or frame backward. a) Click the "Next Frame" or "Previous Frame" button.

46 Fig. Frame display on monitor Sp eed Play To play at different speeds, drag the "Shuttle Bar" slider left or right. Dragging from center position to the right causes high-speed play. Dragging to the left causes the reverse high-speed play. Play speed increases as the slider is moved farther away from the stop icon in the center position. The current play speed is displayed in the center of the "Shuttle Bar". For single speed play, however, "Play" is displayed.

48 Fig. "Volume Control" Check the Picture Type To check the picture type, click the "Frame Display" while movie clips are registered in the "Monitor" window.

49 Fig. Frame Display Clicking the "Frame Display" displays the movie clip frame in the center of the marker position frame. A small rectangle showing the picture type is displayed at the upper left of each frame. You can check the picture type by means of this rectangle's color. The picture type indicated by the rectangle color is shown in the table below. Table: Picture types in frame display Among coded pictures by MPEG video encoding specified in the ISO standard, I-Picture is a picture which is encoded with interframe prediction. Among coded pictures by MPEG video encoding specified in the ISO standard, P-Picture is a picture which is encoded with intraframe prediction using the past reference picture. Among coded pictures by MPEG video encoding specified in the ISO standard, B-Picture is a picture which is encoded with interframe prediction using both the past and the future reference pictures. Adding a Movie Clip to the Temporal Browser In the temporal browser, a sequence of frames of the added movie clip is displayed at regular interval. It is useful for retrieving a position of a certain image, or browsing a long movie clip. Use one of the following three methods to add a movie clip to the temporal browser. a) Select a movie clip from the "Bin" or "Monitor" window, and drag-and-drop it into the temporal browser.

Fig. Audio-only movie clip icon Changing the Display Period on the Temporal Browser Use any of the following three methods to change the display period on the temporal browser. a) Drag the temporal browser "Display Period Slider".

52 Dragging to the right increases the period, and dragging to the left decreases the period. Fig. Using the "Display Period Slider" b) Click the "Reduce View" button or the "Expand View" button on the temporal browser. Fig. " Reduce View " or "Expand View" buttons c) On the "Summarizer" menu select "Temporal Browser", and then the desired period on "Interval". 53 Changing the Time Used for the Display Period To change the time on the display period, first of all click the "Change Display Interval" button on the upper left of the "Summarizer" window. Fig. "Change Display Interval" button The "Display Interval in Temporal Browser" dialog box appears. Fig. "Display Interval in Temporal Browser" setup dialog Next, in "Display Interval in Temporal Browser" place a check on the checkbox having the desired time display period. Up to seven time periods can be selected at one time here. Playing the Selected Section

54 Use either of the following two methods for to play the selected section. The selected section here is the highlighted (reversed background) section on the "Temporal Browser". a) Double-click the selected section. b) On the "Summarizer" menu, select "Temporal Browser" and then "Add to Monitor". Fig. Adding to monitor from the "Summarizer" menu The selected section is added to the "Monitor" and can now be played. See "Play" for methods on how to play the selected section. Clicking the thumbnail while holding down the "Shift" key allows consecutively selecting multiple sections. Display or Hide the Audio Envelope To display the audio envelope, check the "Wave Mode" checkbox on the upper part of the "Summarizer" window. To hide the audio envelope, remove the check mark from the box. Placing a check mark displays an audio envelope below the thumbnail displayed in the temporal browser. This audio envelope has the same time code as that thumbnail.

Switching Between Multiple Movie Clips on the Temporal Browser Use either of the following two methods to switch between multiple movie clips on the temporal browser. a) Click V" on the history drop-down list at the upper right of the temporal browser and select the desired movie clip name. Fig. Switching to a history from the drop-down list b) Select a desired movie clip name by selecting on the "Summarizer" menu, the "Temporal Browser" and then "History".

Deleting the History of an Added Movie Clip Use either of the following two methods to delete the history of an added movie clip. a) Select the movie clip history you wish to delete. Then, on the thumbnail, select "Delete from History" from the right mouse button menu. Fig. Deleting a history with the right mouse button menu b) Select the movie clip history you wish to delete. Then, after checking that the movie clip you want to delete is selected with "Temporal Browser" and "History" on the "Summarizer" menu, finally select "Delete from history".

57 Fig. Deleting a history from the "Summarizer" menu Writing a Thumbnail as a JPEG File To write a thumbnail as a JPEG file, first select the thumbnail(s). Select "Create JPEG File" on the right mouse button menu in the temporal browser. 58 Fig. JPEG file saving dialog The thumbnail is stored under the filename, within the stored folder. "Movie clip name" + "Thumbnail time code" + ".jpg" If multiple frames were selected, the frame with the smallest time code is written as the JPEG file. An audio-only movie clip cannot be selected. Display Thumbnail in Original Size on Monitor To display a thumbnail in its original size, first select the thumbnail you want to show. Then select "Original Size" on the right mouse button menu.

59 Fig. Display original size from mouse button menu The thumbnail selected on the monitor appears in the movie clip original size. An audio-only movie clip cannot be selected. Setting the Edit Section (In, Out Point, Duration) Use any of the following four methods to set the edit section. a) Set the edit section by dragging the MarkIn (edit start) point and MarkOut point (edit end) using the "Random Access Bar". Next, set the edit section by clicking the "MarkIn" set button and "MarkOut" set button at the desired points.

61 Fig. Setting the edit section by entering the time code The edit section that was set can placed into the "Bin" window, "Summarizer" window or "Timeline" window by drag-and-drop. Moving to the Edit Point Use either of the following two methods to move to the edit point. a) Click the "Move Previous Span Point" button or "Move Next Span Point" button. After the marker arrives at the beginning of the movie clip, it moves to the end of the movie clip. Using "Move to Next Span" moves to an edit point after the current marker position. After the marker arrives at the end of the movie clip, it moves to the beginning of the movie clip. Adding to an Audio-Only or Video-Only Timeline To add an audio-only or video-only movie clip to the timeline, use the "V A Switcher" button on the "Monitor" window.

Table: "V A Switcher" button operation * The "A" button is off when a video-only stream is added to the monitor. The "V" button is off when an audio-only stream was added to the monitor. Installing a Movie Clip in the Track To install a movie clip in the track, drag-and-drop the movie clip from the "Bin" window, the "Temporal Browser" or "Monitor" window monitor display section, or from the "Monitor" window with the "Random Access Bar".

65 Separating and Asynchronizing the Movie Clip Video and Audio To separate and asynchronize the video and audio, first select the movie clip you want to asynchronize. Next, selec t "Asynchro " on the right mouse button menu on the movie clip you selected. Fig. Asynchronizing from the right mouse button menu By asynchron izing the movie clip, the video and audio can be edited separately, and audio and video from different movie clips can be combined and edited. Synchronizing the Audio and Video To synchronize the audio and video, first select the audio and video movie clips for synchronizing. Next, click the right mouse button menu on the selected audio and video movie clips, and select "Synchro" on the right mouse button menu.

The "Clip Property" dialog box then opens, so you can enter the MarkIn point, MarkOut point and duration time codes in the In, Out and Duration fields at the bottom of the dialog. Each time you enter a time code, the time codes in the other fields are all changed in real-time.

73 Adjusting the Audio Level To adjust the audio level, first select the movie clip whose audio level you want to adjust and then select "Adjust Audio-Level" on the right mouse button menu. Changing the Icon Size of the Clip within the Track To change the icon size of the clip within the track, select "Configuration" on the "File" menu or click the "Configuration" button on the "Button Bar". A "Configuration" dialog box appears so set the desired size in "Timeline Icon Size" to allow changing the icon size for the movie clip of the "Timeline" window.
