3 Upgrading the router firmware The NTC-140W Series router has dual redundant operating systems; a Main system and a Recovery system. One system may be used to restore the other in the event of a corruption to avoid a total failure of the device. It is therefore necessary to update both the main and recovery systems when a firmware update is available. The firmware update process involves first upgrading the bootloader (u-boot), then the recovery firmware image and then upgrading the main firmware image. Note: In order to perform a firmware update, you must be logged into the router with the root manager account. Refer to the Advanced configuration section of the User Guide for details. Note: Do not change the file extension of the router firmware files as this can cause the firmware upgrade process to fail. Before you begin, ensure that you have the following files on your computer: Applicable model: NTC-140W-02 FILE TYPE FILENAME (SIZE) MD5 MAIN system firmware RECOVERY system firmware U-BOOT ntc_140wx_ cdi (42.8 MB) ntc_140wx_ _r.cdi (14.1 MB) u-boot.img (280KB) d7cee5a6e944114a04f584c37a3ed46d c047d9ec1860f3549ca1282 eeec51d5781c25164d0b24b665fc71f0 To update the NTC-140W Series router s firmware: 1. Connect one end of the RJ-45 (Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the NTC-140W Series Router and the other end to the Ethernet port of your computer. 2. Connect your power source (not included in the package) to the Molex connector of the NTC-140W Series Router and plug it into an available wall socket. Wait approximately 1 minute for the router to start up. 3. Extract the firmware image files from the archive to a location on your computer. 4. Open a web browser and navigate to or 5. In the Username field, enter root and in the Password field, enter admin then click the Log in button. 6. Select the System item from the top menu bar, select the System configuration item from the menu on the left and then select the Upload menu item. 7. Under the File uploads section, click the Choose a file button. Locate the bootloader file on your computer name u- boot.img and click Open. 8. Click the Upload button. The bootloader image is uploaded to the router. 9. Under the File uploads section, click the Choose a file button. Locate the Recovery image file on your computer named ntc_140wx_x.xx.xx.x_r.cdi where the letter x represents the version number of the firmware file and click Open. 10. Click the Upload button. The Recovery firmware image is uploaded to the router. 3

4 11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for the Main firmware image file. The Main image is named ntc_140wx_x.xx.xx.x.cdi where the letter x represents the version number of the firmware file. When you have completed uploading both files, the router displays a list of the uploaded files. Note: Do not remove the power when the router s LEDs are flashing as this is when the firmware update is in process. 12. Next to the bootloader image (u-boot.img), click the Install link and then click OK on the confirmation pop-up window. The bootloader image is updated and when it is complete the router displays The installation was successful and then returns to the list of uploaded files. 13. Next to the Recovery image (ntc_140wx_x.xx.xx.x_r.cdi), click the Install link and then click OK on the confirmation pop-up window. The recovery image is updated and when it is complete the router displays The firmware update was successful and then returns to the list of uploaded files. 4

5 14. Next to the Main image (ntc_140wx_x.xx.xx.x.cdi), click the Install link and then click OK on the confirmation pop-up window. The main image is updated. The installation is complete when the countdown reaches zero. The router automatically reboots into the Main system image. 15. After the upgrade has completed, we recommend that you restore the factory default settings of the router. To do this, use the tip of a pencil to hold down the reset button on the router for seconds. The router reboots with the factory default settings. 16. Log in to the router once more and navigate to the Status page. Confirm that the Firmware version field shows the updated firmware version number. The firmware upgrade is complete. 5

6 Upgrading the module firmware We recommend using the module firmware version listed in the accompanying 4G WiFi M2M Router Firmware Release Notes v1.2 document. At the time of writing, this is module firmware version This guide describes upgrading the module firmware to this version, however the steps described could be used in upgrading to different versions of the module firmware. Before you begin, ensure that you have the following files on your computer: VERSION MODULE FIRMWARE FILENAMES MD SWI_MC7304_FW_05_05_26_00.cwe ddc8a83a5a4012b6510cdea927a SWI_MC7304_FW_05_05_26_00.nvu 7337c09258b1e2f44ccf4459a366a410 Note: Do not rename these files as this will cause the upgrade to fail. To upgrade the module firmware: 1. Log in to the router by performing steps 1-6 from the Upgrading the router firmware section of this guide. 2. Under the File uploads section, click the Choose a file button. Locate the SWI_MC7304_FW_05_05_26_00.cwe file on your computer and click Open. 3. Click the Upload button. The file is uploaded to the router. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the SWI_MC7304_FW_05_05_26_00.nvu file. 5. Next to the SWI_MC7304_FW_05_05_26_00.cwe file, click the Install link and then click OK on the confirmation pop-up window. The module firmware is updated and when it is complete the router displays The installation was successful and then returns to the list of uploaded files. 6

7 6. Click the Status menu to return to the Status page. Under the System information section, confirm that the module firmware version displays The module firmware upgrade is complete. 7
