2 1. General Specifications 1.1 Features Thank you for being interested in purchasing Trend-1 Vibration Data Logger portable device. This device can be used to collect and store vibration data of machinery in the field by measuring vibration acceleration, velocity or displacement level and store the collected data in 40 different bank (machine). It has the following features: Small size and light weight. ABS anti-break casing. IP65 protection level. Clear graphics LCD to display options and measurements. Measures acceleration, velocity and displacement using a standard ICP accelerometer. Re-chargeable Li-Ion battery which can run up to 24 hour continuous measurement. High dynamic range (more than 150 db) achieved by two programmable amplification stages. Fully Auto Range. Programmable analog low-pass filter to remove noise and unwanted high-frequency signals. Trend-1 Device 2.1 Front Panel The front panel of Trend-1 is shown in Figure 2.1. It contains the LCD and the keypad. The LCD displays the menus, options and readings. It is graphics LCD of resolution 128x64. There are 5 functions keys in the keypad, the up arrow, down arrow, ENTER (ENT), ESCAPE (ESC) and power keys Key ENT Function Used to activate current selection, start reading, stop reading ESC Used to go back to the previous menu, cancel selection Used to power off/on the device Down arrow is used to navigate to the following menu item, select the next option or the next machine or point Up arrow is used to navigate to the previous menu item, select the previous option or the previous machine or point Figure 2.1 Front Panel of Trend-1 3

4 2.2 Trend-1 Rear Panel The Rear panel of Trend-1 is shown in Figure 2.2 below. The charging leads shown are connected to the internal Li-Ion battery and they are in contact with the battery charger leads when the device is inserted inside the charging module. positive charging lead negative charging lead Figure 2.2 Rear Panel of Trend-1 3. Operation of Trend-1 Device 3.1 Main Menu The main menu of Trend-1 is shown in Figure 3.1. It contains five items. The small empty arrow head on the LCD is pointing to the currently selected item. You can navigate to through the items using the up and down keys in the keypads and then click ENT to activate the selection. Review item is used to enter data review mode which will be described in section 3.4. Calibration is done through the calibration screen which can be activated by selecting Calibrate menu item. While Skip Data is used to delete all the measured data in order to prepare the device for the next collection procedure. 4

5 3.2 Measurement Screen This screen is shown in Figure 3.2. The reading process can be activated by selecting and activating Collect item. The device will do automatic ranging before reading to select the appropriate signal gain Collect Reading.. Mode Velocity setting and then start reading process. When the device is in reading mode, you can stop reading process by pressing ENT key. The reading is displayed with large font at the upper-left position while the unit of measurement is displayed to the right of the measurement with small text. The battery charge status is also displayed at the upper-right of the screen. The Mode item is used to select from Acceleration, Velocity and Displacement. When this item is activated, you can use the up/down keys to navigate through the selection and then press ENT to accept the new selection or ESC to escape and use the currently selected mode. Also, you can navigate through the machines and points by activating Machine/Point items in order to jump to any location in the data tree mm/s TIPS: Note that the device will automatically save the reading in the selected machine/point and advance to the next point when the reading is done. 3.3 Configuration Screen Figure 3.3 shows the configuration screen. This screen is important to configure various reading options such as the filter setting and detection type for each mode (acceleration, velocity and displacement) and also the averaging time. When one of the three modes is selected, its settings are displayed in the sub-menu in the bottom of the screen. For example, when Acc. is selected, the HP Filter, LP Filter and Detection type for Acc. Velocity Disp. Avg. time HP Filter 10 LP Filter Detection True-Peak Figure 3.3 Configuration Screen acceleration mode are displayed and the control is transferred to the bottom menu in order to activate and change one of the available settings. The HP Filter setting sets the cut-off frequency of the High-Pass filter which rejects all frequencies below the cut-off frequency. The LP Filter is used to select the Low-Pass filter cut-off frequency. The available and default values of these settings for various modes are shown in Table 3.1 below. Note: The Averaging Time is applied to all modes and it controls the time over which vibration signal is averaged. In the beginning of reading when the elapsed time is less than the Averaging Time, the signal is averaged over the elapsed time only. When the elapsed time is large enough, the signal is averaged over the entire latest averaging time. 5

The collected data can be reviewed through this screen. You can navigate through machines and points using the menu below the reading. If the point does not have a reading mm/s Machine Point associated with it, Blank word is displayed instead of the reading. The second cable is connected between the master Figure 3.4 Review Screen and slave units and it has the same color convention. However, it possesses only four terminals +12v, -12v, GND and pic2. The third cable routes the reference probe to the master unit and it possesses only three terminals, +12v, GND and Reference signal. All cables are shielded and the shield is connected to the ground (GND). Mach1 2H 3.6 Calibration Process Calibration process is important when the sensor is replaced or its sensitivity is altered due to aging or other reason. It is recommended to perform calibration process each 1-year to ensure accuracy of readings. Calibration process is activated by selecting Calibrate item in the main menu. Calibration screen is shown in Figure 3.5. The current sensitivity is displayed in the top line. To start calibration process, you can press ENT key. Pressing any other key will cancel the process and return back to the Sensitivity Click ENT to start Figure 3.5 Calibration Screen main menu. When ENT key is pressed, the device will select acceleration mode and will start auto ranging and then reading. Calibration Steps: 1. Select Calibrate from the main menu. 2. Connect the accelerometer to the device and apply a constant acceleration of 9.81 m/s2 or 1 g to the sensor using a certified calibrator. 3. Press ENT. 6

7 4. The device will start auto ranging and reading. The reading may be far away from th actual acceleration. 5. Press ENT again when the reading is stabilized. 6. The device will calculate the new sensitivity and display it. The new sensitivity will be stored permanently to the device flash memory. 3.7 Quick Start and TIPS 1. Power on the device. 2. Select Measure and press ENT 3. The measurement screen will appear. Select Collect and press ENT to start reading. 4. The device will do auto ranging and then start reading in the currently selected mode. 5. Press ENT again to stop reading. 6. The device will save the reading to the selected point. 7. You can change the mode by selecting Mode and then pressing ENT. Then you can choose between acceleration, velocity or displacement. Note: If device is halted due to any reason, you can press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds or more. The device will be forced to restart. The settings and data will not be lost upon this process. 4. Battery Charging Trend-1 is equipped with internal 7.4V Li-Ion battery that can be used to operate the device for 24 hour continuous measurement. The battery can be charged by using the Advanced Charging Module ACM-2 as shown in Figure 4.1. The ACM-2 uses multi-step constant current charging to ensure safe, full and quick charging. The charging time is ranging from 3 to 4 hours when the battery is fully discharged. The charging process stops when the battery voltage becomes 8.5V to prevent damage. Figure 4.1 ACM-2 Charging Module The charging module contains an LED to indicate that the battery is being charged either in stage-1 or stage-2 (see table below). When the LED goes off, that s mean charging process is finished and the device can be removed. If the device is kept attached to the charger, a top-up current of 3.3 ma 7

8 continues to flow to the battery in order to keep it fully charged. The charging module also contains a 2-pin external connector to charge the standby battery package. So, please keep the battery charged and do not let its voltage drops under 6.5V. The main screen displays battery voltage and the temperature of the device. 8
