1 TDSDB14550 Features Inexpensive development or project board providing quick start up solution. 5v Pic alternative to the 3.3v TDSDB146J50 Mini B USB socket to provide power and USB functionality. 40 pin IC compatible format of 0.1"x1.7" allowing for the board to be mounted on strip board or breadboard. On board 20 MHz system crystal. On board KHz crystal for the PIC18F4550 T1OSC. 2 LED Port indicators (RE0 & RE1) with solder link to disable feature. 3 push switches, including Reset and RB2 & RB3. Compatible and preloaded with Microchip's 18F4550 Bootloader Software. Compatible with Tiertex I2C Add-on Board TDS1I2C1. Small footprint, overall size 63mm (h) x50mm(w). 40 pin i/o left unsoldered to provide maximum flexibility for socket/header/wired choice. Supplied with separate 2x20pin SIL headers and 1x6 pin ICSP right angle header. USB Socket - USB power from a USB Host. 2. USB Socket Powered by a USB charging/power adaptor. 3. 5v supplied to pin 40, 39 or P a g e V e r s i o n

5 There is no voltage regulation on-board so any external power supply must be within the Input voltage specification to avoid damage to the PIC microcontroller. Users must be careful when supplying power to the board that they do not damage any USB connected equipment. 3.0 On-Board Features 3.1 PIC PIC18F4550 Specifications The PICPIC18F4550 is one of the most popular microcontroller in the 8bit microcontroller range from Microchip and includes a wide range of functionality 32Kbytes Flash Program Memory 2048 bytes of RAM I²C, UART, 3 Timer modules 5 P a g e V e r s i o n

6 USB 2.0 module 13 channel A/D convertor Low power technology 5v Operation. 3.2 System Clocks An on-board 20 MHz crystal is used to provide the system clock for the USB Demo board. An additional KHz crystal is also installed for use with the PICPIC18F bit or 16 bit timers. Software RTCC can easily be accomplished using timer interrupts in conjunction with this crystal source. 3.3 ICSP 6 Way There is a provision of a 6 way In-Circuit Serial Programmer (ICSP) socket on the board. This is fully compatible with Microchip s PICKIT2 & 3 Flash programmers. Both these ports pins can be safely reconfigured for other input, or output, functions. RE0 and RE1 have LED indicators. A solder link is provided to allow for easy disconnection of this feature if not required. The board is supplied with this link connected. 6 P a g e V e r s i o n

7 4.0 Bootloader Microchip s PIC18F4550 HID Bootloader is pre-installed allowing software development using only the USB connection. The Bootloader PC application, application Libraries, MPASM, MC18 C compiler and MPLAB IDE are all free to download from the Microchip website The Bootloader occupies 4k out of the available 32k program space. No drivers are required for the USB connection as it employs a HID interface. The bootloader application for the PC is available by download from either Microchip or the Tiertex download area. To enter the Bootloader hold down the RB2 button when either inserting a USB cable, or pressing the MCLR button. If entered successfully the RE0 and RE1 LEDs should alternate flashing fast signifying connection to a PC. Running the Microchip USB Bootloader should bring up this window signifying connection with the USB demo board. Any code written using the Bootloader system should execute from 0x1000, and place high and low interrupts at 0x1008 and 0x1018 respectively. 7 P a g e V e r s i o n
