Planned availability dates July 16, 2008 (electronic software delivery) August 13, 2008 (media and documentation) Description WebSphere MQ for HP OpenVMS V6.0 Manageability: Easier problem determination and avoidance. New status information shows whether messages are being processed or are being delayed, and indicates what might be causing any delays. Statistics similar to the system management facility (SMF) data for IBM z/os systems are written to event queues, enabling better monitoring of application and queue manager behavior. You can use this function for monitoring the required capacity of a system, giving you an indication of workloads. It is easier to see important information returned from status commands because programmable command format (PCF) and MQSC commands now have a WHERE clause that filters queries. You can use this information in commands that inquire about status to see potential problems before they cause a significant outage. Monitor the MQ network and change the way it is working. The new DISPLAY CONN command shows which applications are connected to a queue manager and which queues they have opened. The new STOP CONN command forces a disconnection from a queue manager, allowing an MQ administrator to disable a problem application. New attributes for queues, queue manager channels, and cluster channels extend the range of cluster workload algorithms. WebSphere MQ can track the route that a message would be expected to take through its network. New flags can request that queue managers that process the message should send back an activity report (for example, which channel, queue manager, and transmission queue have been used). Event messages are generated when log files are switched, and it is now easier to automate the copying and archiving of log files. In addition, a queue manager can be made to replay copied logs without fully starting. Standards: Java Message Service (JMS) V1.1: The current version of the JMS standard is supported. The older level of interface is also included for backward compatibility. Internet Protocol V6 (IPv6): WebSphere MQ now fully supports IPv6 networks. IPv6 is the latest version of the IP protocols and provides many more IP addresses than are allowed under IPv4. Enterprise service bus: You can use a combination of WebSphere MQ servers, WebSphere Application Server deployments, and WebSphere Message Brokers to deploy an ESB. This combined network of servers can then seamlessly exchange information across your enterprise, regardless of whether the original communication began as a JMS message from WebSphere Application Server or WebSphere MQ, or as a native message from WebSphere MQ. 3 Exploitation of 64-bit addressing. For HP OpenVMS, WebSphere MQ V6.0 queue managers are 64-bit processes only. A single set of application libraries is provided for both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Existing 32-bit applications continue to run unchanged; newer applications might choose to take advantage of 64-bit addressing. Data compression on channels. All channel types now support compression, which can improve network bandwidth usage and may also improve performance of encrypted SSL channels. Usability Cross-platform configuration tool: An Eclipse-based configuration user interface, which runs on Microsoft Windows and Linux on x86 platforms, replaces the Windows-based MQ Explorer. It can configure WebSphere MQ on other platforms such as OpenVMS. It is extensible, with documented interfaces for additional plug-ins. Eclipse is an award-winning, open source platform for the construction of powerful software development tools and rich desktop applications. Additional new function: JMS clients can use the channel definition table and run the same channel exits as other clients. The security interfaces used by setmqaut are given programmable command format (PCF) equivalents to permit remote administration. Some error log entries can be suppressed or duplicates ignored. Queue managers on all platforms can automatically start items such as applications, listeners, and trigger monitors. Web services are supported through the integration of SOAP SupportPac MA0R. Publish and subscribe is supported through the integration of SupportPac MA0C. Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), provided in other WebSphere MQ products, is not supported in WebSphere MQ for HP OpenVMS V6.0. Compatibility: WebSphere MQ for HP OpenVMS V6.0 will interoperate with queue managers from any previous level of WebSphere MQ or MQSeries products. The WebSphere MQ Explorer now runs on the Linux on x86 platform (in addition to the Windows platform). The MQ Explorer can be used on a client connection from an earlier supported level of WebSphere MQ or MQSeries on a different platform (for example, WebSphere MQ for HP OpenVMS V5.3). Planning information Customer responsibilities: For Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) function, the client must download HP's SSL offering. Visit The client must identify the machines on which they will install WebSphere MQ and purchase the required number of Processor Value Units (PVUs) with their order. Before operating the system, the client must confirm that they have sufficient Use Authorization to use the system. Problem determination (PD) is a client responsibility. PD is an assessment of whether a problem is caused by hardware or software. PD is complete only when the cause of the problem is identified. This assessment includes examination of available symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the product. Problem source identification (PSI) is a client responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the program to a host system control program (SCP), an application program, or another source. Assisting the client with PSI is an IBM service and support responsibility. Software Maintenance is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users or resources which may include servers, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table.
