7 Chapter 1. About this release Enhancements IBM Tivoli Switch Analyzer extends the ability of the IBM Tivoli NetView product to perform root cause analysis of layer 2 and layer 3 problems. Working with Tivoli Switch Analyzer, Tivoli NetView isolates problems to non-ip ports on managed layer 2 devices. Using Tivoli Switch Analyzer, Tivoli NetView users can view the port level discovery of switches and view the impact of taking down a switch or port. The following enhancements were made to Tivoli Switch Analyzer, Version 1.3: v New layer 2 views display the layer 2 topology with status, providing enhanced visual troubleshooting capability. v Port status monitoring provides fault detection at the port level across the managed network, including layer 3 switches, redundant switched networks, and remote campuses. Product notes The following changes were made to Tivoli Switch Analyzer, Version 1.3: v The topo_server process that queries devices for layer 2 discovery is now called l2_topo_adapter and the log file for this process is renamed l2_topo_adapter.log. v There is a new process called topo_server that processes topology user interface requests. The log file for this new process is called topo_server.log. Please refer to the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide for more information on these processes and log files. 9 Chapter 2. Software limitations This chapter provides information about known software limitations for Tivoli Switch Analyzer, Version 1.3. Information in this chapter applies to both the English language and translated version of Tivoli Switch Analyzer. Software limitations This section describes the limitations of the Tivoli Switch Analyzer product. v When Tivoli NetView object databases are regenerated, Tivoli Switch Analyzer clears its current caches automatically. Under typical operating conditions, Tivoli Switch Analyzer maintains this cache automatically as the topology information in the Tivoli NetView product changes. However, when Tivoli NetView topology information has extensive updates, stop Tivoli Switch Analyzer and delete the corr_cache and event_cache files. These files are located in the /usr/ov/itsl2/cache directory. Deleting the files forces the Tivoli Switch Analyzer cache to reload when Tivoli Switch Analyzer is restarted. Note: All information that is currently stored about correlated events is lost when the files are deleted. v After initial discovery in Tivoli NetView stabilizes, stop and restart the itsl2 daemon to ensure that Tivoli Switch Analyzer updates its layer 2 discovery based on the latest information. v When the netmon daemon updates the ovsnmp database with a new community name from the communitynames.conf file, it does not issue an ovsnmp change trap to prompt other applications to reread the ovsnmp database. For Tivoli Switch Analyzer to receive these updates, restart the itsl2 daemon. v When you start the Tivoli NetView Web console on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3.0 system, the following message is displayed: Incorrectly built binary which accesses errno or h_errno directly. Needs to be fixed. AMU W Layer 2 topology data is currently not available. You can ignore this message as it does not indicate any loss of functionality. v For a Point to Point path to be completed from source to destination, the layer 3 path must be discovered by Tivoli NetView. As stated in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide, Tivoli NetView must have SNMP access to each router along the path. However, the Point to Point view cannot take advantage of the Custom Links in Tivoli NetView or those links created with IBM Tivoli Remote Campus Installation Service (TWL links) to span unmanaged regions. v When viewing large switches in the Physical view, set the hop count to a maximum of 2 hop counts. Setting the hop count to 3 or 4 can be very resource intensive for switches with a large number of ports. v When opening a layer 2 view, the Tivoli NetView Web console communicates with the server for information. If the Tivoli NetView Web console does not receive a reply after 2 minutes, a timeout message is displayed. Under typical operating conditions, the 2 minute default timeout is sufficient, and does not require modification. If you are experiencing occasional timeouts, especially on the longer Point to Point paths, you might want to increase this value. Refer to Copyright IBM Corp

10 the Configuring the Web servlet section in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide for information on how to increase the ClientRequestTimeout value. v The layer 2 views do not support Tivoli NetView Web console scoping. Devices are not filtered based on scoping rules per user account. 4 Release Notes

11 Chapter 3. Installation and upgrade notes This chapter provides installation and upgrade information for the Tivoli Switch Analyzer product. System requirements This section provides information about the hardware requirements for Tivoli Switch Analyzer. The values for disk space are in addition to those required by Tivoli NetView. Refer to the Tivoli NetView Release Notes for Tivoli NetView hardware requirements. If your systems do not meet the hardware and software requirements listed in this section, you will have problems installing and using Tivoli Switch Analyzer. Actual requirements might vary based on the size of the system. Table 1 lists the minimum and recommended hardware requirements: Table 1. To check for this package, run the following script: v On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Intel system: rpm -qa grep compat-libstdc v On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 zlinux system: rpm -qa grep compat-libstdc v On the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 system: rpm -qa grep compat If the /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 shared library is not already on the system, you can get it from the following rpms: v On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Intel system: compat-libstdc i386.rpm v On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 zlinux system: compat-libstdc s390.rpm v On the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 system: compat i586.rpm Supported Tivoli NetView versions Tivoli NetView Version Fix Pack 2 or later is a prerequisite of Tivoli Switch Analyzer Version 1.3. You must also install the following interim fixes from the NetView_Interim_Fixes directory on the Tivoli Switch Analyzer CD if running Tivoli NetView Version Fix Pack 2: v v ITSA13INT v IY63336 These interim fixes will be included in all future Tivoli NetView fix packs. See Installation checklist for installation details. Installation checklist This section provides an overview of Tivoli Switch Analyzer installation and configuration steps. Review the information in this section before beginning your installation. 6 Release Notes

13 1. Before you install Tivoli Switch Analyzer, ensure that the correct version of Tivoli NetView is already installed. See Software requirements on page 5 for more information. 2. Install the Tivoli NetView interim fix if you have Tivoli NetView Version Fix Pack 2 installed. Tivoli NetView interim fixes are located on the Tivoli Switch Analyzer CD in the NetView_Interim_Fixes directory. Refer to the included interim fix readme files for instructions on how to install them. 3. Install the ITSA13INT Tivoli NetView interim fix if you have Tivoli NetView Version Fix Pack 2 installed. Note: To install the ITSA13INT interim fix on Windows systems, use the force option when running the install script. For example: run the following command: install force 4. After installing the ITSA13INT Tivoli NetView interim fix, reinstall any Tivoli NetView Web console installations from the upgraded native Tivoli NetView server installation. Do this after you upgrade the Tivoli NetView server. Go to and download the following files: v For the Web console on Windows systems: nvwc_thin.zip If you use the thin Web Console nvwcinstall.exe If you use the full Web Console v For the Web Console on UNIX and Linux systems: nvwc_thin.tar If you use the thin Web Console nvwc.tar If you use the full Web Console Do not use the full Web console that includes the Java Runtime Environment (nvwc_xxx_jre_1.3.tar) because it does not contain the interim fix updates. If you install using the nvwc_xxx_jre_1.3.tar for a new Web console installation, be sure to apply nvwc.tar afterward. 5. If not already installed, install the IY63336 Tivoli NetView interim fix if you have Tivoli NetView Version Fix Pack 2 installed. 6. Check the prerequisites to make sure Tivoli Switch Analyzer can manage the layer 2 devices in your environment. For more information, refer to the Checking Prerequisites section in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide. 7. Resolve any problems with layer 3 network topology data. For more information, refer to the Ensuring accurate layer 3 topology information section in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide. 8. Run the installation utility to install Tivoli Switch Analyzer on your system. For more information, refer to the Running the installation utility section in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide. 9. Verify that the product is correctly installed. For more information, refer to the Verifying the installation section in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide. 10. Configure the Tivoli NetView Web server. For more information, refer to the Configuring the Tivoli NetView Web server section in the Tivoli Switch Analyzer Administrator s Guide. Upgrade notes You can upgrade to Tivoli Switch Analyzer Version 1.3 only from Tivoli Switch Analyzer Version The upgrade installation migrates all custom settings. Chapter 3. 14 When upgrading, installation scripts back up existing Tivoli Switch Analyzer files under the /usr/ov/itsl2 directory to a backup directory in the /usr/ov/tmp/itsl2 directory. The backup directory is named backup_v<current_sa_version>. The files from the existing installation are backed up to the following directory: v On Windows systems: \usr\ov\tmp\itsl2\backup_version v On UNIX systems: /usr/ov/tmp/itsl2/backup_version For example, if Tivoli Switch Analyzer Version is being upgraded, the files are backed up to the backup_v1.2.1 directory. The following directories under the /usr/ov/itsl2 directory are backed up: v On Windows systems: cache, conf v On UNIX systems: bin, cache, conf, etc, netview, nls If the upgrade installation fails, the /usr/ov/itsl2 directory is cleared out and the Tivoli Switch Analyzer product is not installed on the system. After a failed upgrade installation, perform the following steps to restore your system: 1. Diagnose the problem using the installation log files and correct it. The installation window directs you to the location of the log files. 2. Save the contents of the backup_version directory to another location. 3. Install the previous version of the product. 4. Restore any customized files from the saved backup_version directory to their appropriate place in the directory structure. 5. Perform the upgrade migration to version 1.3 again. Creating custom links in Tivoli NetView A new custom links feature is included in Tivoli NetView interim fix which is located on the Tivoli Switch Analyzer CD. This interim fix is required by the Tivoli Switch Analyzer installation. Custom links allow you to create a logical link or tunnel across an unmanaged region. You might want to link a pair of routers to show a logical connection between them. For example, if you have an outsourced network provider servicing your branch offices, you might want to show a link from the main office edge router to the branch office customer edge router. This link appears on the Tivoli NetView maps as a dash-dotted line. Tivoli Switch Analyzer can use this link to resolve remote campuses by extending the connected region to include the branch region. To create the link, edit the netmon seed file and create an entry with the following <ipaddr1>:0:<ipaddr2>:0 where ipaddr1 is an existing IP address on the first router and ipaddr2 is an existing IP address on the second router. Both zeros are required. You can create multiple links from one router, but each link must use a separate IP address on that router. AIX installation instructions To install Tivoli Switch Analyzer on AIX systems, do the following steps: 1. Set the LANG and the LC_ALL environment variables to the English language locale of en_us before you install the Tivoli Switch Analyzer program. 2. Install the Tivoli Switch Analyzer program. 3. Set the LANG and LC_ALL environment variables to the appropriate locale in your current session before you start the Tivoli NetView native console or any other Tivoli NetView applications. Table 2 lists the settings for the LANG and LC_ALL environment variables for each code set and operating system. 4. Stop and then restart the Tivoli NetView daemons using the following commands: v On AIX systems: /usr/ov/bin/ovstop nvsecd /etc/netnmrc v On Solaris and Linux systems: /usr/ov/bin/ovstop nvsecd /etc/init.d/netnmrc 5. Configure the Tivoli NetView Web server. 6. Start the Tivoli NetView native console or any other Tivoli NetView application. Copyright IBM Corp

18 If you do not set the environment variables to the appropriate English language locale, the installation will not complete and you will see the following error message: The directory /usr/ov/tmp/itsl2/tmp/istempxxxxx does not contain enough space to extract temporary files. Please specify a temporary directory using the -is:tempdir option. Use the -is:help option for more information. Troubleshooting language support Software If you experience problems displaying Tivoli NetView in your language, do the following steps: 1. Stop all Tivoli NetView native consoles and Tivoli NetView Web consoles. 2. Stop and then restart the Tivoli NetView daemons using the following commands: v On AIX systems: /usr/ov/bin/ovstop nvsecd /etc/netnmrc v On Solaris and Linux systems: /usr/ov/bin/ovstop nvsecd /etc/init.d/netnmrc 3. Configure the Tivoli NetView Web server. 4. Start the Tivoli NetView native console or any other Tivoli NetView application. Also refer to the Tivoli NetView documentation. limitations This section describes limitations in the translated versions of Tivoli Switch Analyzer: v On Windows Server 2003 systems, the labels for the Save As and Help buttons in the Tivoli NetView Monitor window are truncated. The Tivoli NetView Monitor window displays the Tivoli Switch Analyzer reports in the native console. This problem will be fixed in a future release of the Tivoli NetView product. v After you select the Point to Point View menu option in the Tivoli NetView Web console, the word Input in the title bar of the Input window is displayed in English. This problem will be fixed in a future release of the Tivoli NetView product. 12 Release Notes
