2 Overview Desktop labs hosted at can be accessed using the method stated below: Via the OpenVPN Connect Client supported on virtually all current computer browsers, has some limitations with clipboard and local drive redirection but should work on virtually any network and requires a software installation on the client machine Part I Connecting to the VPN via Windows OS To connect to the OpenVPN Connect Client, you will need to travel to (in the address bar of your Browser) Accessing the Site with the View Client Once you are on the main page of the Connect Client you can go ahead and enter your login credentials. Your user name will be the same as your UMUC network ID. Make sure that Connect is selected from the drop down list and then click Go PASSWORD NOTE: If this is your first time logging into VPN, you will need to register your account. Do this by travelling to: Once your password has been reset, proceed to login. CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 2
3 Installing After entering your credentials, you will be prompted to download the client in order to continue. Click on the link labeled Click here to continue A download dialogue will appear, select the option to Save the VPN client to your Desktop. From your Desktop, double-click the OpenVPN Connect icon so that you can subsequently connect to the Client. (You can also travel to the Start menu All Programs OpenVPN Connect) Once the Client has launched, you will be prompted to re-login and indicate a Server. Enter the Server: umucvpn.aeronomy.com and Username and Password used initially CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 3
4 Launching Your Client A Warning message will appear requesting your permission to allow a VPN connection to Server , select the option Yes After the download is complete and the file has saved, the Connect Client will connect to the OpenVPN Server and show the following status dialogue. A windows message will also be shown indicating you are now connected to Server Note: Once you have successfully connected to the VPN, proceed to Part II which has directions used in connecting to the cloud and the virtual machines. 5 Part II Windows Access to RDP enabled VMs Step 1 Go to Note: If you decide to copy, paste or type the URL, please ensure the entire URL is copied or typed. Step 2 Enter your assigned user name and password CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 5
6 Adding the Virtual Machine Step 3 Once logged in and on the Home screen of your designated course, select the option Add vapp from Catalog Step 4 When on the Add vapp from Catalog page, you will be prompted to Select a vapp Template Please select CSEC640_Lab01 for your first lab or CSEC640_Lab02 for your second lab Click Next located in the bottom right corner to proceed CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 6
7 Step 5 On the next screen, you will be prompted to select a Name and Location for the selected template The vapp name will include your username by default, please also add the course name/lab number as well. Example: vapp_usernamecsec640l1_1 Click Next to proceed Step 6 When on the last screen Configure Resources, select the Virtual Machine that is labeled with the related course number that you are currently logged in on. From the drop-down list under Storage Policy, select the option ANY Click Finish CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 7
8 Creation of the Virtual Machine Step 7 Once finished, you will be directed back to the Homepage. Observe that the VM is being created. Note: Your first vapp creation will require all four VMs to be created and may take a few additional minutes. After the first vapp creation, Labs will only need to be started (this will take much less time) Image will display Pending Step 8 When the status has changed to Stopped as indicated below, click the Green Arrow to start the VM. 9 Step 9 At the top navigate to the tab labeled My cloud, from this screen on the left toolbar you will select VMs and then note the EXTERNAL IP address Connecting to the Virtual Machine Step 10 PLEASE NOTE: You must be connected via VPN in order for the Remote Desktop Connection to work In the Computer field, type the IP address that was given in the VMs tab of the vcloud Director under External IP column. Select Connect to proceed CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 9
10 Step 11 While successfully connecting to the VM, you ll receive a warning as seen in the screen shot below. Please click yes to be connected to the VM. Then, click OK to be prompted for credentials to login to the VM. Step 12 The login credentials for the VM are not the same as the login credentials used for the VPN and the Virtual Environment. Please use Student1 for the user name and Csec640 for the password to access the Virtual Machine. CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 10

12 Part III Connecting to the VPN via MAC OS To connect to the OpenVPN Connect Client, you will need to navigate to Note: OPENVPN is not compatible with the latest release of Mac OS X (El Capitan) Accessing the Site with the View Client Once you are on the main page of the Connect Client you can go ahead and enter your login credentials. Your user name will be the same as your UMUC network ID. Make sure that Connect is selected from the drop down list and then click Go PASSWORD NOTE: If this is your first time logging into VPN, you will need to register your account. 13 Installing After entering your credentials, you will be prompt to CLICK to download the OpenVPN client application in order to continue. The download will begin (note the Downloads icon on your dock) Once the installation has completed, travel to the Downloads folder and select the OpenVPN Connect Installer Icon to open the application and finish the installation process. 14 The OpenVPN Connect Installer will now open and begin the remaining process in order to completely install the software. Select Continue to proceed to the next step. Installer Steps: License: Review the Software License Agreement Destination Select/Installation Type: Select your local hard drive for the software to be installed on your Mac CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 14
15 Note: You may be prompted a message to enter Administrator s Username and Password in order to finalize the installation. o This is your personal credentials used on your PC You have successfully installed the OpenVPN Connect software on your MAC PC You may select Close to exit out of the installer Launching Your Client From the Spotlight Search, type OpenVPN Connect to locate and launch the application. You can also travel to the Applications folder to locate and launch the software Note the OpenVPN Connect icon on your top toolbar CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 15
16 Click the OpenVPN Connect Icon, from the dropdown list select the option to Connect CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 16
17 Enter the Server: umucvpn.aeronomy.com and select Connect to proceed On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your Username and Password. Refer to your UMUC network ID for username Click Connect to proceed PASSWORD NOTE: If this is your first time logging into VPN, you will need to register your account. Do this by travelling to: Once your password has been reset, proceed to login. A message will be shown indicating that a connection to has been established Note: Once you have successfully connected to the VPN, proceed to Part II which has directions used in connecting to the cloud and the virtual machines. 18 Part IV MAC Access to RDP enabled VMs Step 1: Go to Recommended Browser: Firefox (For an optimal user experience, use one of the following browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Firefox 3 or higher, or Google Chrome) Note: If using Safari you will be displayed the following web page upon travelling to the link. o Click Continue anyway to proceed to login Step 2: You will be requested to grant permissions to run VMware Client Support plugin, click Allow o It is your choice to set preference to Allow Now, or Allow Now and Remember Step 3 Enter your assigned user name and password; refer to your VDA credentials, or your UMUC network ID CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 18
19 Adding the Virtual Machine Step 4: Once logged in and on the Home screen of your designated course, select the option to Add vapp from Catalog Step 5: When on the Add vapp from Catalog page, you will be prompted to Select a vapp Template Please select CSEC640_Lab01 for your first lab or CSEC640_Lab02 for your second lab Click Next located in the bottom right corner to proceed CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 19
20 Step 6: On the next screen, you will be prompted to select a Name and Location for the selected VM template The vapp name will include your username by default, please also add the course name as well. Example: vapp_usernamecsec630_1 Step 7 When on the last screen Configure Resources, select the Virtual Machine that is labeled with the related course number that you are currently logged in on. 21 Creation of the Virtual Machine Step 8 Once finished, you will be directed back to the Homepage. Observe that the VM is being created Note: Your first vapp creation will require all four (4) VM s to be created and may take a few additional minutes. After the first vapp creation, Labs will only need to be started (this will take much less time) Image will display Pending Step 9 When the status has changed to Stopped as shown, click the Green Arrow to start the Virtual Machine Observe the VM(s) will start and the status will change to the Running state CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 21
22 Step 10 At the top navigation bar, travel to the tab labelled My Cloud, from this screen on the left toolbar you will select VMs and then note the EXTERNAL IP (10.X.X.X.) address for your Virtual Machine Please note the External IP of the scan VM for Lab1 and Use the Microsoft Remote desktop application to remote into the VM. Please note the IPs in this screen shot might not be the same as the ones your instance or instances of the VMs will be assigned. Please make sure that you verify these External IP addresses each and every time you access the virtual computer lab to work on your lab as they are not supposed to remain the same for you. Connecting to the Virtual Machine Step 11 PLEASE NOTE: You must be connected via VPN in order for the Remote Desktop Connection to work Use Microsoft Remote Desktop application from your computer to connect to the IP address For MAC OS users: Navigate to the Applications folder Locate Microsoft Remote Desktop o You may also locate the application by searching Microsoft Remote Desktop in the spotlight search Launch the application. On the top toolbar, select New to establish a connection CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 22
23 Step 12 Connection name: This is your choice o Example: Student-CSEC610 PC name: Type the IP address that was given in the VMs tab of the vcloud Director under External IP column o Example: Gateway: Select the gateway pertaining to the VM o If Adding Gateway, refer to step 12a Username/Password: o Use the following credentials: student1/csec6xx (where xx is your course ID) Note: Login Info is Case Sensitive Resolution: Native Colors: Highest Quality (32 bit) Full Screen Mode: Customize to your preference Step 12 a Gateway name: This is your choice o Example: Student-CSEC610 Server: Type the IP address that was given in the VMs tab of the vcloud Director under External IP column o Example: Username/Password: o student1/ Csec6xx (where xx is your course ID) o Note: Login info is Case Sensitive Close windows when all fields have been completed CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 23
24 Step 13 Observe the new gateway connection has been created Double-click the gateway to launch the connection CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 24
25 Step 14 Upon desktop launch, you will be displayed a security warning. Click OK to continue to the desktop You have successfully logged on, proceed with the lab instructions at this point. CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 25
26 Part V Logging off the Virtual Machine When logging off of the Remote Desktop always remember to save your work, all work should be stored externally on your personal online account, such as Google Drive, or you can it to yourself. Step 1 To Log Off, travel to the Start menu and select Log Off located in the bottom right-hand corner. Note: If you stop working for 15 minutes, but don t log off, your desktop will enter Screen Saver Mode. Log in to continue working on your files. If you remain idle for more than 30 minutes your session may time-out, be disconnected and eventually logged off. Work that has not been saved to your online storage location will be lost CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 26
27 Logging off via MAC OS Step 2 After logging off of the Virtual Desktop, you will be required to also disconnect from the OpenVPN application. Step 3 Select the OpenVPN icon located on the top-left toolbar. From the appeared list, select the option to Disconnect Step 4 You will be shown a message that you have been disconnected from the indicated Server You have successfully logged off CSEC 640 Lab Instructions Version 1.0 pg. 27
28 Logging off via Windows OS Step 2: After logging off of the Virtual Desktop, you will be required to also disconnect from the OpenVPN application. You may do this by, selecting the arrow located on the right-hand corner of your task bar to show hidden icons. Select the OpenVPN icon Note: The green check mark on the icon indicates that you are currently connected to a network. Step 3: After selecting the OpenVPN icon, you will be shown a list of options choose to Disconnect the Server Step 4: You will be shown a message that you have been disconnected from the indicated Server You have successfully logged off.
