Offensive Countermeasures: The Art of Active Defense Prepared by Data Security Council of India A NASSCOM 1 Initiative
YoungWallet is a recently launched mobile wallet company. They began their operations in However, in the span of three years have become India s most preferred mobile wallet service. To boost the usage of their mobile wallet, they have created an ecosystem where consumers can pay and receive payments using YoungWallet. At present they have a website offering all of their services and mobile applications for major mobile platforms such as Apple ios, Android and Microsoft Windows Phone. YoungWallet has a well-skilled information security team, headed by their Chief Information Security Officer, Mr.. The team comprises of Information Security managers,, and a legal council. Being in payments industry it is crucial for YoungWallet to protect their IT infrastructure from malicious entities. They have deployed best in class security solutions and are also certified against standards such as PCI DSS. However, off late they are observing a surge in attacks against their infrastructure. Though they haven t been breached yet but Mr. Murthy is aware that it s just a matter of time. He wants to know more about the malicious entities behind these attacks so that he can be more proactive in his approach to deal with these attacks.
Who are the attackers? Constant Attacks!!! How to deter them?, Is it LEGAL? To attack or not to attack? How to prosecute them?
Information Security Team Team, assume you re all attackers, how do I rob your peace?,
Annoy them! Make them spend more time on the network. The more activity they do, the better are our chances to catch them. Obfuscate, Obscure and Observe Setup traps for them. Lure them towards an easy target and catch them red handed.
OODA
Attack the attacker! Strategically place well crafted exploits across the organization network that, when triggered, would attack the attacker s system. This could get us into their system and obtain information that would help us implicate them, such as real IP address, geolocation etc. However, one issue remains, is this LEGAL?
A thin line..but doable! Do not make any of our active defence components easily. For example, do not implement them on main website or any other server which would be regularly accessed by our customers. Do not attack the attacker s IP address and do not launch DDoS attack against the attacker. Put up banners before launching the attack. Finally, don t be evil!
So we are talking about AAA of offensive countermeasures Annoyance, Attribution and Attack.. Information Security Team,
Information Security Team How do we go about implementing them?,
The Annoyance and Attribution can be implemented in some of the following ways: Fuzz the attacker s tools Send out false responses, for example modified user-agent strings, create non-existent DNS entries Swamp the scanners by deploying evil servers Create infinitely recursive file system directories Setup honeypots, honeytables, honeyports and file integrity testers, trap documents Force the attacker to abandon Tor and proxychains
Following tools can be used: Tool Category Phase SpiderTrap Random URL generator Annoyance Weblabyrinth PHP based random URL generator Annoyance Adminer Database front-end Annoyance NOVA Honeypot Attribution Labrea Tarpit Alert Generator Attribution Artillery Honeyport Attribution BearTrap Honeyport Attribution DeCloak UnAnonymizer Attribution Web Bug Server Web Beacon Receiver Attribution
The Attack phase, to track the attacker, can be implemented in some of the following ways: Setup JavaScript payloads using browser-exploitation tools Deploy wireless countermeasures such as fake wireless access points etc. De-authenticate leeches and force them to latch on to fake wireless access points Deploy java-based payload to trigger exploit on the attacker s system Force the attacker to run tools on their system that would send their geo-location
Following tools can be used: Tool Category Phase BeEF Browser Exploitation Framwork Attack Claymore Counter Network Scanner Attack MDK3 and void11 De-authentication Attack I Love My Neighbours Track wifi leeches Attack Social Engineering Toolkit Social Engineering Attack Metasploit Exploit Framework Attack HoneyBadger GeoLocator Attack PushPin GeoLoator Attack
While Active Defence is a good strategy, we must also remember the following: Don t just patch. Patch and validate. Deploy patches for third-party software as well Keep the anti-malware software always on and updated Don t do the same thing again and again and expect different results Run regular checks and scans (Nessus, Hyena, SCCM, WMIC) Deploy network and host based firewalls Enforce software restriction policies to prevent execution of unwanted binaries
And.Don t be evil!
Information Security Team Thank you team! Looks like the time for leveraging Offensive Countermeasures has arrived.,
