4 Computing Services in Zayed University The mission of the Department of Computing Services is to connect people, processes, and content through the effective use of reliable information, computing, telecommunications technologies and consulting services in support of the University s core mission. Computing Services comprises several integrated functional areas responsible for computer hardware, software, audio-visual, network and telecom (VoIP) services throughout the University. The University provides for a secured wired and wireless access to the network services. A high-bandwidth backbone facilitates inter-campus connectivity. The campus wide Local Area Network is linked to the Internet, connecting the University to all major educational and research sites in the world. Internet connectivity allows Zayed University to offer a host of services in addition to basic World Wide Web access. Some available services include delivery; distributed availability of data and programs via interconnected file servers, library electronic databases. While Internet use for academic work and learning is encouraged; misuse of this facility is strongly discouraged. Certain file sharing programs (bit torrents, P-to-P clients), and downloading any unauthorized or prohibited content is strictly not allowed. 4
5 Among other facilities Computing Services provides a Service Desk and Media Services for the faculty, staff and students. The Service Desk is the first point of contact for all computing issues. The media services counter serves as a distributing point for laptops and other media related items (projectors, cameras, screens) for temporary use on campus. Printing services are available on campus for students and faculty to support their academic courses. Macintosh and PC computer labs on the campus allow students and faculty to experience high end applications. At Computing Services we strive to continuously test and adapt new technology and introduce processes based on widely accepted Best Practices - to facilitate achieving the University s academic goals - through a rewarding and efficient computing experience. 5
