5 Introduction The purpose of this document is to describe virtualization support* in Dell Management Console (DMC) 1.0. Support for Virtualization servers in DMC 1.0 is defined as support for the Discovery and Classification, Inventory including identification of guest VMs and health monitoring. More details about the features are in the following sections below: * This document only pertains to the management of virtualized systems, not what DMC may itself be installed on. Supported Virtualization OS: 1. Classic ESX 3.5 and Embedded ESX (ESXi) 3.5 Update 4 3. Hyper-V Server Note: All DMC supported features on windows are also supported on Hyper-V server and All DMC supported features on Linux are also supported on Classic ESX. Features Supported on All Virtualization Operating Systems 1. Discovery and Classification 2. Host-Guest association 3. Hardware Inventory 4. Reports 5. Right click actions 6. Alerts Note: For #1 and #2 above, Altiris agent is required on the managed node. As ESX 4.0 and ESXi does not support Altiris agent, these features are not supported. 5

6 For #3 above, the performance metrics are not supported on ESXi. Refer to Performance Monitoring -> Metrics for Performance section in DMC 1.0 user guide for more information on the performance metrics. Discovery And Classification Guest and Host machines will be discovered separately over the network. Here are the details for each type of virtual server. Classic ESX The host discovery will be performed using VMware SNMP agent. Prerequisites 1. SNMP service is enabled on the host server. 2. SNMP is enabled in the connection profile that is used in the Discovery task. Hyper-V Server The host discovery will be performed using a WMI provider. Prerequisites 1. WMI service is enabled on the host server. 2. WMI is enabled in the connection profile that is used in the Discovery task. 3. If a Hyper-V server is discovered through SNMP protocol, virtual machines (guests VM residing on the Hyper-V server) information is not rendered as this information is only exposed through WMI. However hardware inventory information of the Hyper-V server can be rendered using SNMP or WMI with OMSA installed. 4. Refer to Configuring Discovery and Inventory Settings section in the DMC 1.0 User guide for information on configuring SNMP/WMI protocol. Embedded ESX The host discovery will be performed using the CIM providers provided by VMware. Prerequisites 1. WSMAN service is enabled on the host server. 2. WSMAN is enabled in the connection profile that is used in the Discovery task. 3. Refer to Using DMC to Manage VMWare ESXi Servers white paper for more information on configuring WSMAN protocol for ESXi server. Note: Please refer to the References section later in this document for more information on: Supported system management standards (SNMP, CIM) in ESX/ESXi/Hyper-V Supported OMSA versions for ESX/ESXi/Hyper-V Unsupported features in OMSA for ESXi Configuring OMSA/SNMP for ESX/ESXi Discovery of Virtual Machines (guests) Virtual machines can be discovered in two ways: 1. Through discovery of host server which stores information of all the VMs present on it. In this case even the VMs that are powered off will get discovered and correlated to host server. 2. Independently over the network. Make sure that SNMP or WMI service is enabled on guest OS and the corresponding IP address is included in the discovery range of network discovery task. Host-Guest association Virtual host server will be identified based on the hypervisor OS they are running. 6

7 Virtual host servers will be shown in All Devices tree under Virtual Host node. If a Virtual Host does not have Guest VMs, it will not appear under Virtual Servers node. The association between host and virtual machines running on it will be created post discovery using the MAC address, IP address and UUID of virtual machines. 10 Inventory Inventory task gathers detailed hardware information of the managed node. Classic ESX The hardware inventory will be shown using OMSA SNMP agent. Pre-requisite: 1. OMSA is installed on the server 2. SNMP service is enabled on the server. 3. SNMP is enabled in the connection profile that is used in the inventory task. Hyper-V server The hardware inventory will be shown using OMSA SNMP or WMI agent. Pre-requisites: 1. OMSA is installed on the server 2. SNMP service or WMI service is enabled on the server. 3. SNMP or WMI or both are enabled in the connection profile that is used in the inventory task. Embedded ESX The hardware inventory will be shown using the CIM providers provided by VMware. The information will be gathered using WSMAN protocol. Pre-requisites: 1. WSMAN service is enabled on the server. 2. WSMAN is enabled in the connection profile that is used in the inventory task. 10

VMs associated to a host will be shown on the right hand side pane in the All Devices page when user clicks the host server in the left hand side organizational view. VMs will also appear under computer section of All Devices organizational view (Figures 1-3). The virtualized servers are also displayed under Computer section in the Default organizational view (Figure 12). 2. Each virtual machine will appear under this node and when clicked will display the virtual machines running on that server on the right hand side pane (Figures 1-3, 12). 3. Hardware Inventory can be seen in the resource manager s Summary Hardware Summary section (Figures 4-11). 18

20 Reports Virtualization Hosts report shows virtualization capable servers that DMC has discovered (Figure 13). Virtual Machines report shows list of all the virtual machines (guest machines) discovered by DMC (Figure 14). Dell Servers do not support WMI events and WSMAN indications. However DMC Monitor solution alerts are generated for the supported metrics only on the host servers. Please refer to DMC 1.0 User guide for information on DMC Monitor solution alerts. 24

25 Figure 18: Monitor solution Alerts received from ESXi host server displayed in the Event Console An undetermined alert indicates that, DMC console is unable to determine the primary health for the device due to any of the following reasons: Agent (OMSA) that provides health information is not running on the system. DMC cannot communicate (via WS-MAN/SNMP/WMI) to the device. 25
