RST Quick Start Guide S X The S X switches are 1-rack unit (RU) switches that support 32 x 100 Gigabit QSFP28 ports and 2 x 10 Gigabit SFP+ ports. These switches also have a 10/100/1000 network management port, a RJ45 port for console access, and a USB 2.0 type-a port for data access. The chassis for the S X switch includes the following user-replaceable components: 4 x fan modules with the following airflow choices: Port-side intake fan module (labeled ) Port-side exhaust fan module (labeled I) 2 x power supply modules (1+1 redundancy) with the following: 550W AC power supply with port-side intake airflow (labeled blue) 550W AC power supply with port-side exhaust airflow (labeled green) 1. Mounting holes Mounting the Switch in a Rack Caution: Two individuals are recommended to install the switch. One individual should position the switch in the rack, while the other secures it using the rack screws. 1. Align the mounting brackets with the switch and secure with the included screws. 2. Mark the location on both posts. Use the screws and cage nuts supplied with the rack to secure the switch in the rack. Note: Illustrations are for reference purposes only. Actual cabinet posts may differ. S X 02
4. Installing Fan Modules The fan module is a field replaceable unit and can be replaced during operations as long as the remaining modules are installed and operating. Depending on whether you plan to position the ports in a hot or cold aisle, you can order a fan module with port-side intake () or port side exhaust (I) airflow. For fan installation, make sure the label on the fan matches the required airflow. Port side intake installations require fan modules labeled (), while port side exhaust installations require fan modules labeled (I). Caution: To prevent the switch from overheating, you must install modules with the correct airflow direction: Module labeled : Port-side intake Module labeled I: Port-side exhaust Failure to install the fan with the correct airflow configuration can cause the switch to overheat and shut down. Airflow Indicator Definition label: port-side intake airflow I label: port-side exhaust airflow I I 1. Loosen the captive screw securing the fan module. 2. Pull out the fan module Align the fan module with the switch bay. 4. Slide the fan module into the switch and push until it is flush with the bay. 5. Secure the captive screw
Installing Power Supply Units The power supply unit (U) is a field replaceable unit and can be replaced during operations as long as the remaining modules are installed and operating. Depending on whether you plan to position the ports in a hot or cold aisle, you can select Us designed for a port-side intake or port side exhaust airflow. To identify the airflow, see the following information before installing the U. Caution: To prevent the switch from overheating, you must install modules with the correct airflow direction: Blue: Port-side intake Green: Port-side exhaust Failure to install the U with the correct airflow configuration can cause the switch to overheat and shut down. Airflow Indicator Definition Blue label: port-side intake airflow Green label: port-side exhaust airflow 1. Hold the U handle and press the release latch to unlock from the switch. 2. Pull the U module out of the switch. 3. Align the U with the switch bay. 4. Slide the U into the switch and push until it is flush with the bay. Note: The switch supports up to two Us that must have the same airflow direction as the installed fans. 04
6. Grounding the Switch It is recommended that a compliant system is installed as part of the chassis to reduce or prevent the risk of shock hazards, greatly reduce the risk of equipment damage or reduce the potential of data corruption. Warning: This equipment must be grounded. Do not defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment without a suitably installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an electrician if you are uncertain that suitable grounding is available. 1. nsure the rack is properly grounded and in compliance with local regulatory guidelines. nsure that a good electrical connection to the grounding point exists. Remove any paint or material that may prevent good contact. 2. Remove the grounding screw from the switch. 3. Connect the screw to an 18 AWG minimum grounding wire (not provided), and connect it to the grounding point on the switch. 4. Connect the other end of the wire to rack ground. 7. Connecting Power Connect an external AC power source to the U Verifying Switch Operation Verify basic switch operation by checking the system LDs. When operating normally, the U1/U2,, and LDs should all display green. 05
9. Initial Setup stablishing a first-time serial connection To assign an IP address, you must have access to the command line interface (CLI). The CLI is a text-based interface that can be accessed through a direct serial connection to the device. Access the CLI by connecting to the console port. After you assign an IP address, you can access the system through such as Putty, Teraterm or HyperTerminal. Perform the following steps to access the device through a serial connection. 1. Connect the serial cable to the console port (IOIO) on the device and the other side to the appropriate port on the computer. Cable types may vary depending on the switch model. Note: The serial cable type is dependent on the switch model. 2. Disable any serial communication programs running on the computer such as synchronization programs to prevent interference. 3. Open a terminal emulator application such as HyperTerminal on a Windows PC, Putty or Teraterm and configure the application as follows. The following settings are for a Windows environment. Other operating systems will vary. Baud: bps Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: None 4. After the connection is established, the GRUB main menu displays. See the following screen shot. 5. Select an entry from the menu list to continue Once an entry is selected, press nter to boot the selected OS. The device displays the ONI CLI mode. The Initial Setup process is complete. 06
10. Installing a Transceiver Note: It is not recommended to use tie wraps with optical cables to prevent over tightening and damage the optic fibers. Read the following guidelines before proceeding with the installation: Before installing a switch, take into consideration rack space requirements for cable management and plan accordingly. It is recommended to use hook and loop style straps to secure and organize the cables. For easier management, label each fiber-optic cable and record its respective connection. Maintain a clear line of sight to the LDs by routing the cables away from the LDs. Caution: Prior to connecting any cable, discharge the static charge on the cable. Before you begin the procedure, ground yourself by using an SD wrist strap. See the following steps to install a transceiver: 1. Remove the new transceiver from its protective packaging. 2. Remove the protective plug from the transceiver port. 3. Place the bail (wire handle) in the unlocked position and align the transceiver with the port. 4. Slide the transceiver into the port and use gentle pressure to seat it in place. A clicking sound is audible when the transceiver is locked
