3 INNOVATION Dual Combo (SFP/RJ-45) Gigabit LAN The Optical Fiber What is Optical Fiber? Optical fi ber is a type of cable designed for networking. It carries much more information than a conventional copper wire and is generally not subject to electromagnetic interference and the need to retransmit signals. Most longdistance lines are now made of optical fi ber. Optical fi bers have multi-mode and single-mode. Advantage 1. Not subject to electromagnetic interference and highly secure (protection against lightning) 2. Low loss and attenuation (suitable for long distance communication) 3. Wide bandwidth, large transmission capacity. The type of fi ber you need depends on your required transmission distance as well as overall budget. If the distance is less than a couple of miles, multimode fi ber will work well. Transmission system costs (transmitter and receiver) will be in the $500 to $800 range. If the distance to be covered is more than 3-5 miles, single mode fi ber is the choice. Transmission systems designed for use with this fi ber will typically cost more than $1000 (due to the increased cost of the laser diode). 1

ST connectors have a key which prevents rotation of the ferrule, ensuring force on the core optical junction. MT-RJ uses a form factor and latch similar to RJ-45 connectors. Two separate fi bers are included in one unifi ed connector. What are combo 10/100/1000 base T(X) and 1000 base SFP slot) GbE ports? Combo: There are two kind of ports: SFP and Ethernet. Their optical and electrical are multiplexing. User can choose one of them according to the actual network, because both can't work when inserted at the same time prior to using the SFP port. User can also see LEDs on the front panel to know which port is working. GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) has an increased speed of 1000Mbit/s. Its standard ard was produced by IEEE802.3z and required optical fi ber. 2

5 Rapid Connector When installing a fiber network, the fiber termination connection is the most important factor affecting overall system performance. Current termination connections have on-site welding and a grinding method, but face common technical challenges such as how to inscrease productivity, save time and costs, and ensure product quality. The rapid connector is the best choice to address these challenges. Peel Optical Cable Insert the optical cable into the peel plier. Push the plier to the end and press until you hear a "crack" sound. Pull out the optical cable. Press Pull B. Strip Overlay Put the peeled optical cable into the fi x plate. Use the wire stripper to strip a 0.25mm overlay from the plate's edge, then use alcohol to clean the exposed cable. C. Cut Fiber Put the fi x plate into the cutting knife (see image). Make sure the fi x plate is secure, then use the knife to cut the fi ber. Push Insert Locate end Hold Range D. 6 Redundant Dual DC Power Input PWR1 : 9 V (+/-0.3 V) ~ 36 V PWR2 : 10.5 V (+/-0.3 V) ~36 V PWR2 PWR1 GND VCC ACC INNOVATION 10.5~36V Car lead-acid battery pack 9~36V Redundant dual DC power input The redundant dual DC power input design increases the reliability of the system while preventing data loss and system corruption from sudden power failure. When main power is unavailable or low voltage capacity is present, the system can switch to the second power input instantly and without interruption. There are two power connectors on the bottom panel. The Power 1 connector is a terminal block that supports ACC On signal.the Power 2 connector is a DIN connector that can directly connect to a power adapter. When the system is in ACC On mode, the main power input is from the Power 1 connector. When the system is in ACC Off mode, the main power input is from the Power 2 connector. The ACC on/off mode is selected by the ACC on/off switch on the bottom panel. The following sections describe how redundant power works in ACC On mode and ACC Off mode. ACC ON Operation Mode In ACC On mode, the Power 1 connector must connect to the ACC On signal to be able to control system power. The ACC On mode is designed for vehicle applications. In ACC On mode, the main power input is the Power 1 connector and the backup power is from the Power 2 connector. Boot-up When both power connectors are connected to a power source with over 9 V, the two power LEDs on the front panel remain off until the ACC ON signal jumps from low to high. The user can choose AT power mode or ATX power mode to control the system. The following fl ow diagrams show the boot-up process and the LED status in AT and ATX power modes. 4

7 Switch to Backup Power During operation, system power will switch from Power 1 to Power 2 automatically when the following situations occur: Power 1 < 9 V and Power 2 > 10.5 V Power 1 > 9 V, but the ACC ON signal jumps from high to low Power 1 is unplugged and Power 2 > 10.5 V The following fl ow diagram shows how the power is switched between Power 1 and Power 2 and their LED statuses: Shutdown The system will shutdown in the following situations: Power 1 < 9 V and Power 2 < 10.5 V Power 1 > 9 V, Power 2 < 10.5 V and ACC ON signal jump from high to low Press + buttons for 6 seconds The following fl ow diagram shows the system shutdown process and the LED statuses. To turn on the system in ATX power mode, press the + button for three seconds. Press these two buttons for six seconds to turn off the system. ACC OFF Operation Mode When in ACC Off mode, the main power input is the Power 2 connector and the backup power is from the Power 1 connector. Boot-up When both power connectors are connected to a power source with over 9 V, the two power LEDs on the front panel turn on. The user can choose AT power mode or ATX power mode to control the system. The following fl ow diagrams show the boot-up process and the LED status in AT and ATX power modes. 5

9 INNOVATION Dual-Band 2.4/5GHz WiFi a/b/g/n 3T3R MIMO Design What is Dual Band Wireless Networking? In Wi-Fi wireless networking, dual band is the capability to transmit on the 5 GHz band of a and the 2.4 GHz band used by b, g, and n. Unlike ordinary Wi-Fi equipment that only supports a signal band, dual-band gear contains two different types of wireless radios that can support connections on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz links. Why combine 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz? Network range, advantage: 2.4GHz The higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range. Thus, 2.4 GHz networks cover a substantially larger range than 5 GHz wireless networks. In particular, the higher frequency wireless signals of 5 GHz networks do not penetrate solid objects nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals, limiting their reach inside homes. Network Interference, advantage: 5GHz You may notice your cordless phone, Bluetooth, automatic garage door opener, or other home appliance advertise 2.4 GHz signals on its packaging. Because this frequency range is commonly used in consumer products, it's more likely a 2.4 GHz home network will pick up interference from appliances than a 5 GHz home network. 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz are different wireless signaling frequencies that each have advantages for computer networking. Higher frequency networks are not necessarily superior to lower frequency ones, however. So-called dual band hardware combines the best of both types of hardware by integrating both types of radios into the product. Protocol Freq. Thru. MIMO: Multiple-Input Multiple-Output is the method of utilizing multiple antennas for wireless communications. For wireless networking, MIMO technology appears in some WiFi routers, greatly enhancing their capability over single-antenna routers. MIMO WiFi utilize the same network protocols and signal ranges that non-mimo routers do. MIMO products achieve higher performance by more aggressively transmitting and receiving data over WiFi channels. MIMO signaling technology can increase network bandwidth, range and reliability at the potential cost of interfering with other wireless equipment. 7

10 What is 3T3R MIMO? MIMO increases both the range and throughput of a wireless network by utilizing multiple wireless antennas in tandem to transmit and receive data. The number of antennas are for MIMO, but the number of streams the chipset can use determine the "XTXR" factor. T: Transmitter R: Receiver 3T3R means it receives on 3 channels and transmits on 3 channels. Each channel's max link rate is 150Mbps, so 3T3R supports a max link rate of up to 450Mbps. 2T2R supports up to 300Mbps and 1T1R up to 150Mbps. Generally, one product with 2 antennas has 1T2R or 2T2R MIMO architecture while 3 antennas have 2T3R or 3T3R MIMO architecture. 2T2R is one standard MIMO technology, where 2 groups of streams transmit and receive by 2 antennas. 3T3R has one more receiver and transmitter than 2T2R, and can send redundant signals for enhanced signal reliability as well as more effective signal reception in distant and noisy environments. WIFi MIMO work theory In MIMO systems, a transmitter sends multiple streams by multiple transmit antennas. The transmit streams go through a matrix channel which consists of all NtNr paths between the Nt transmit antennas at the transmitter and Nr receive antennas at the receiver. Then, the receiver gets the received signal vectors by the multiple receive antennas and decodes the received signal vectors into the original information. MIMO channel model n MIMO Technologies Applications Although a/b/g networks continue to be popular today, next generation real time video-over-wifi applications will need to sustain signals over greater distances and at higher data rates with increased reliability. New n MIMO technologies enable data rates up to 450Mbps for a 40MHz channel, and provide the performance and reliability required to drive effi cient WiFi links with the highest throughput at range. So n MIMO technologies are able to satisfy next generation real time video-over-wifi applications 8

11 2011 INTEL LOW POWER DESKTOP CPU SOLUTION Fanless embedded systems with low power desktop processors are a leading-edge technology with an eco-friendly design, that provides one of the most flexible solutions for a smaller carbon footprint. It's the best balance between performance and energy-efficient computing. When compared with Intel Atom and Mobile processors with similar price range and power consumption, IEI fanless embedded systems outperform the competition. Origin Plenty of IPC buyers are looking for versatile, low-cost PC solutions. Such systems have to deliver adequate performance and should not require more power than necessary. It's also important to point out that we re not focusing on performance or power consumption alone, but on balancing performance, power, and cost together. As we know, traditional embedded systems which adopt Intel Atom or mobile processors are easier to design as a low power solution, and avoid thermal issues. Atom was designed to be a low-cost, low-power solution, but its value in the desktop space is debatable if you consider performance. We pit the cheapest Core i3 against Intel Atom processor on a performance-per-dollar and a per-watt basis to see which is better. We found that the system idle power of a mainstream Core i3 system was quite similar to an Atom system s power requirements. However, power consumption has to relate to performance, because a slow, low-power system might require much more power to complete intensive workloads if it needs more time to fi nish the job, too. The two products we're pitting against each other belong in different market segments, with Intel s latest Pinetrailbased Atom platform going up against Core i3. Atom solutions are meant to be cheap and small, while Core i3 is a fully featured and far more powerful processor for desktops. Because both are aimed at the value segment of the market, it's understandably easy to confuse their roles and capabilities. This review should make it clear just how dissimilar these two chips really are. Atom vs. Core With Atom-based nettops and netbooks available for only a few hundred dollars, Atom is clearly cost-effective and power-conscious. Both attributes are great, and they enable Intel to address new markets sensitive to even lower price points, such as emerging countries and low-cost system environments. But then, Atom was never meant to be a strong performer. Consequently, it's not a great choice for anyone who does more on his or her PC than write s and surf the web. Core i3 is the entry-level product of Intel s desktop processor lineup and is more powerful than the Atom. It's able to handle HD video playback, all sorts of audio and video conversion, encoding, transcoding, fi le archiving, image or audio editing, and so on. Many Atom systems can't even play HD content without stuttering or responsively multitask while decompressing a ZIP fi le. Our Q67 test system with Core i3 is faster and much more effi cient. At this point, you should consider an entry-level Core i3 machine. Enjoy better performance and save signifi cant time with a desktop PC and boost power effi ciency along the way.
