3 1. Introduction Information is provided to assist with planning and preparation for the installation of Instrument Manager v8.10. Specifications are included for the base hardware for both physical and virtual servers, workstations (thin clients) and device servers. 2. Dedicated Instrument Manager Server 2.1 Server Class Computer (Recommended) Abbott recommended server specification for Instrument Manager for server class computers. Specifications for hard drive sizing and partitioning should be adjusted based upon installation requirements identified by Database and Server sizing tool calculations. 4 2.2 Using a Workstation Class Computer for IM Server Using a workstation class computer for running Instrument Manager introduces a level of risk in regards to system availability due to a number of failure points. Consider the following risks when making a decision on the type class of computer to be used for an Instrument Manager server. Risks Most workstation class computers do not have: Redundant power supplies Fault tolerant disks Workstation operating systems have reduced functionality in comparison to server operating systems. System management issues should also be taken into consideration when choosing a workstation for running Instrument Manager. Systems located in a Data Center or Server room are generally protected from: Power fluctuations and outages Physical access intrusion by controlled access processes Fire by suppression systems Air conditioning failures Locating a computer in a laboratory environment carries greater risks for: Damage from liquids, impacts and unauthorized access Responsibility for backup and recovery Responsibility for applying security patches to the operating system Responsibility for maintaining virus protection software Responsibility for investigating server and application issues Note: A workstation class computer and operating system should be used for a test environment or as a thin client instead of a primary server. Please consult with your IT vendor to manage risks. Utilize the requirements for a server class machine provided in Section 2.1 system components. 4

5 3. Instrument Manager Thin Client Workstation The following is the recommended specification for Instrument Manager thin client workstation. This specification should be adjusted, based on the installation requirements. Local user access on the Thin Client workstation SVGA monitor, mouse and DVD/CD-RW drives Fixed barcode scanner (used with Specimen Storage and Retrieval module) Local Administrator logon or local user account access with administrative privilege 5

Bio-Rad Unity Real Time Server To obtain the latest information regarding system requirements for Bio-Rad Unity RealTime, visit the following url: System Requirements: v1.1: v2.0: Support Information: Note: Based on the version being installed or upgraded, it will affect the dependent software and hardware required, e.g., MS SQL server,.net framework, OS, port numbers, memory and CPU. 4.1 Combined Instrument Manager and Bio-Rad Unity RealTime Server Start with the server specification in Section 2, Dedicated Instrument Manager Server. Adjust the specification by checking the Bio-Rad item in Instrument Manager Bio-Rad Server Sizer sheet of the DatabaseServerSizer.xls tool. Application Memory requirement: 512 MB Note: Due to system resource and environmental challenges, it is best to install the Bio-Rad software on a separate system, if possible. 4.2 Combined Bio-Rad Unity RealTime and Instrument Manager Workstation Start with the workstation specification in Section 3, Instrument Manager Thin Client Workstation. Adjust the specification by checking the Bio-Rad option in Instrument Manager Bio-Rad Workstation Sizer sheet of the DatabaseServerSizer.xls tool. Application Memory requirement: 128 MB 6
