Fanless Design Without rotating parts, such as a CPU fan, system fan, power supply fan, the Compact Embedded Computers are designed with extended MTBF and require very low maintenance. Ruggedized Limited Internal Cabling For general embedded computers, cables are used for wiring between connectors and CPU boards. These internal cables may increase the risk of system failure due to broken cables, loose contacts, or mistakes in assembly. But since connectors on the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series are soldered directly on the PCB, the internal cabling inside every embedded computer chassis is strategically optimized. 3 Display Control Informative LED Screens at 2008 Olympics Sporting Event Display China Project A leading provider of visualization and display solutions was tasked with furnishing indoor/outdoor public LED displays for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Such displays have been gaining in popularity, proving an ideal medium for live and recorded broadcasts of sports, news, and commercials. Installed throughout key venues, both indoors and out, these colorful LCD displays serve to broadcast live competitions, show game schedules and athlete scores, as well as to broadcast commercials and announcements. Approximately 30 thousand athletes from 205 countries will rely upon the information presented on the Olympic displays, and tens of thousands of onsite fans will closely watch the results of each game. 4 Application Implementation ARK-3380 Multiple Video Interface, Fanless Embedded Computer ARK-1370 Ultra Compact, AMD Geode LX800 with PC Card Slot, 4 x USB, 1 x LVDS, 1 x LAN, 2 x COM, 1 x 10/100 LAN, Fanless Embedded Computer Each LED display solution positioned indoors and outdoors around the Olympic venue utilizes ARK-3380 for display and non-stop broadcasting, and ARK-1370 for monitoring the display system and communicating with the server. ARK-1370 also serves as the backup system for ARK-3380, displaying static images if the ARK-3380 undergoes maintenance. In the Olympic display system, the ARK-3380 receives broadcast contents via Ethernet. The ARK-1370 LED display monitor connects to the LED screens and to the ARK-3380 via COM port, and to the server via LAN. It continuously monitors the performance of the videowall display system. Should any problem occur, the system will send an alert to the management center so a technician can be immediately dispatched. 5 In-vehicle Instant Commuter Information Bus Point-of-Information Italy Project The bus fleet of a major Italian city needed a reliable, easily maintained point-of-information (POI) system for their buses. This system needed to receive information from a central server, and broadcast streaming video or bus timetables. Advantech s ARK-1380 ultra compact, fanless embedded computer won the bid, and now each year over 25 million city bus passengers, both residents and visitors, rely on this POI system for broadcast news, weather forecasts, information about shows and exhibitions, product commercials, and most importantly, city bus routes and schedules. And when a GPRS card is added to the ARK-1380, streaming video or location-specific timetable information can be displayed. This Advantech device comes equipped with a PCMCIA slot and can be attached to a monitor through its LVDS connector.
