3 Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure Hard disk drive (HDD) upgrade procedure Important: Read the following information prior to performing the procedures in this documentation Preparation The following procedure includes the steps necessary to install a hard disk drive (HDD) upgrade kit in a Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet PC. The hard disk drive (HDD) is referred to as a hard drive or drive throughout this documentation. Important: Ensure that no power is applied during this procedure and that you are working in a clean, well-lit area. You will need a small Phillips head screwdriver to remove and replace the screws. DANGER: Disconnect all power from your tablet before beginning the installation or removing the drive. WARNING: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage the drive and/or tablet. Normal static precautions should be taken prior to opening the tablet, and when handling the drive and any other internal components. Touch a grounded object before working on the Tablet PC. 4 while working inside the Tablet PC case. Motion Computing is not responsible for damage you may cause while performing the procedures stated in this documentation. WARNING: Avoid subjecting the drive to excessive shock and impacts. Do not drop the drive; a drop of a small distance onto a table top or other hard surface is enough shock to damage the drive. When mounting the drive, protect the drive from excessive shock and impacts at all times. WARNING: Follow these safety notices when performing the procedures listed in this documentation. Handle the drive only by the edges. When handling or mounting, take care not to apply any pressure to the top or bottom covers or printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). Do not hit the interface connector pins against other objects. Do not make contact with the interface connector pins. Contact causes pin dent, electrical discharge distraction, or contact failure. Hot swapping (power-on swapping) can damage the drive. The drive must be swapped only when the tablet is powered off. Improper insertion of connectors can cause catastrophic failures. Refer to this document prior to performing the connector insertion. If installed, the insulation sheet should not be removed from the PCBA-side of the drive. Catastrophic failure can occur if the insulation sheet is removed or damaged. Do not press the top cover of the drive. Pressing the top cover of the drive can cause catastrophic failures. Do not push the bottom cover or PCBA of the drive. Pressing the bottom cover or PCBA of the drive can cause catastrophic failures.. During write operation of the drive, data can be lost due to unexpected or accidental power loss. Do not pull out the drive cable while the connector is locked. Do not lock the connector without the cable installed. 4 Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure

5 Removing the existing hard disk drive Perform the following steps to remove the existing hard disk drive from the Tablet PC. 1. Turn off the tablet; remove the AC power cord and the battery to ensure that power is not present during this procedure. 2. Remove the battery by sliding latches toward the center and lifting the battery out of the tablet. 3. Remove the two screws that fasten the hard drive cover to the tablet. Remove the two silver screws that fasten the bracket and hard drive in the hard drive bay and lift the bracket away from the top of the hard drive. Important: Ensure that you keep the two silver screws (M2.5 x 4L) for when you re-install or replace the current hard drive. Silver screws Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure 5

6 5. Carefully remove the hard drive connector from the motherboard by slowly and evenly pulling the plastic lift strap straight up and with equal force on each side of the lift strap. Plastic lift strap Hard drive connector and cable Hard drive assembly 6. Carefully lift the hard drive assembly out of the hard drive bay and place it gently on a work table. The hard drive assembly fits tightly in the hard drive bay. Grip the hard drive at the top edge of the rubber boot that surrounds the hard drive and slowly work it out of the bay. The rubber boot helps protect the drive from the effects of shock and vibration. You will use the same rubber boot when installing the replacement drive. 7 Removing the rubber boot Note: The LE1700 hard disk drive assembly is shipped with the rubber boot installed. Motion recommends that you do not remove the rubber boot. However, if you need to remove the rubber boot, perform the following steps to remove the rubber boot prior to installing the new hard disk drive. If you are installing a hard drive and the rubber boot is installed, skip this procedure and go to Installing the new hard disk drive on page 9. Important: Prior to starting this procedure, refer to the safety notices in Preparation on page With the hard drive oriented as shown in the figure below, hold the hard drive firmly by the edges and pull off the bottom right corner of the rubber boot from the hard drive. 2. While holding the hard drive firmly by the edges, pull off the top right corner of the rubber boot from the hard drive. Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure 7

8 3. Holding the edges of the left side of the rubber boot, slide the hard drive out of the rubber boot, and gently place the hard drive on a flat work table that is free of electrostatic charge. The empty rubber boot will be installed again prior to re-installing the hard drive. 8 Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure

9 Installing the new hard disk drive Perform the following steps to install the new hard disk drive assembly in your Tablet PC. Important: Prior to starting these procedures, refer to the safety notices in Preparation on page 3. If your new hard drive does not include the rubber boot, perform the following steps to install the rubber boot on the new hard drive. Otherwise, go to Installing the new hard disk drive on page 9. Installing the rubber boot on the hard disk drive 1. Remove the packaging from the new hard drive. 2. In the orientation shown below, place the rubber boot on a flat stable surface that is free of electrostatic charge. 3. Holding the edges of the rubber boot, slide the hard drive into the rubber boot. Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure 9

10 4. Firmly holding the left edges of the rubber boot and hard drive, pull the upper and lower right corners of the rubber boot over the corners of the hard drive. 5. Ensure the rubber boot is installed correctly by gently turning over the hard drive assembly, and then inspecting the installation of the rubber boot on the hard drive. The rubber boot should cover the four corners of the hard drive and fit snugly around the hard drive. 10 Hard Disk Drive Upgrade Procedure

11 Installing the new hard disk drive 1. Remove the packaging from the new hard drive and carefully insert the hard drive assembly (rubber boot on hard disk drive) into the hard drive bay. 2. Insert the guide pin on the hard drive cable connector into the guide pin hole on the tablet motherboard. WARNING: Ensure no other cables are placed between the tablet hard drive connector and the hard drive cable connector when making this connection. If the black-gray cable located near the tablet hard drive connector is not moved away from the connector before inserting the hard drive cable connector, the insulation on the black-gray cable can be pinched, possibly exposing the copper wires. 12 3. Ensure that the pins on the hard drive cable connector are mated fully with the connector on the tablet drive bay. Place a finger on each side of the cable connector and at the same time, apply equal downward pressure to both sides of the cable connector. 4. Install the bracket into the two slots and ensure the guide pin hole on the bracket is aligned on the guide pin in the hard drive bay. 13 5. Press the left side of the bracket into place, and install the two silver screws. WARNING: You must use the same two silver screws (M2.5 x 4L) that you removed when removing the hard drive. Installing different screws that are longer than the original two silver screws can permanently damage the motherboard that is located below the hard drive location in the tablet. If you feel resistance when pushing down on the left side of the bracket, make sure the bracket is fully inserted into the two slots of the hard drive bay and the guide pin hole of the bracket and the guide pin are aligned. If the screw holes on the bracket do not align with the holes in the hard drive bay, make sure the bracket is not upside down. Guide pin hole Location of slots Silver screws (M2.5 x 4L) 6. 14 7. Install the battery and turn on the Tablet PC to verify that everything works correctly. Important: If the tablet fails to start correctly or the hard disk drive is not detected or functioning correctly, verify the cable connection in this procedure (step 3, Installing the new hard disk drive on page 11).
