2 About the Flashmatrix 1000 Series Edge computing represents the next significant wave in computing. The IoT is ushering in a new era where devices will produce more data than people. To manage and make sense of all of this data requires intelligent compute at the edge capable of supporting emerging cognitive workloads. Toshiba Flashmatrix is defined for the emerging needs at the edge. Flashmatrix converges compute, storage and networking elements into a single physical enclosure and reduces the need for external switching. Flashmatrix is optimized for the emerging and demanding needs of edge computing and has unique features beyond today s hyper converged infrastructure. It is a super-converged platform, a new class of compute for the edge. Super-Converged for the Edge that s Shared Everything All Flash 48 terabytes of flash, 24 microservers, 192 CPU cores, all converged in a 2U enclosure. Toshiba s shared everything architecture enables all data to be accessible to all compute. Storage is fully virtualized and integrated into a converged mesh network switch. Orchestrated Containers Daisho Core enables stateless Docker container apps for the edge. Daisho Core seamlessly provisions, de-provisions and resurrects your apps based on system demand. 3 Unique Flash Memory Architecture for Low Latency Flashmatrix uses NAND flash memory to realize a combination of high speed storage and low data transfer latency. Multiple datasets can be accessed in parallel due to the unique architecture in which NAND flash memories are arranged in a matrix and are accessible by all CPU cores. This 2D Torus Network (Figure 1) is a switchless topology that allows all processors to access all of the memory space. Efficient Shared Memory Space Figure 1: 2D Torus Network (Source: Wikipedia) The intelligent features of Flashmatrix reduce CPU overhead incurred by storage accesses. Multiple computing nodes can access target data items in parallel through optimal access paths. In addition, since small data sets are distributed among many storage nodes, parallel processing reduces system latency and I/O loads (Figure 2). Figure 2: Traditional architectures vs. Toshiba s Shared Everything architecture Rich set of APIs enable Heterogeneous Data Persistence Flashmatrix provides application interfaces that can simultaneously handle both structured and unstructured data, making it possible to integrate big-data analytics applications. This helps simplify the system configuration and improve the operational efficiency. Crunch Faster with a Switchless Topology Distributed parallel processing using a minimum of 192 CPU cores significantly reduces computing latency. Flashmatrix provides high system performance because it does not need to perform data transfers via an external network. It also scales with predictable latency by adding multiple 2U enclosures to a rack. (see page 4 for details) 3/6
