Keep your forearms horizotal, with your wrists i a eutral, comfortable positio (2) while usig the keyboard or mouse ot at a agle. Let your upper arms hag aturally at your sides. Use the palm rest oly briefly, to relax your wrists whe you are ot typig. Place the mouse at the same level as the keyboard ad use your whole arm to move it.

12 Welcome Positio ad viewig agle of the moitor Set the display at a comfortable viewig distace (3). Make sure the display scree is at eye level or slightly lower. Use the display s tiltig feature, if available, to fid the best positio. You ca reduce eye-strai ad muscle-fatigue by adjustig the tilt of the display to the proper positio. Remember to adjust the brightess settig of the display. Furiture ad posture Sit i a chair with good back support (4). Adjust the level of the chair so your feet are flat o the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. Sit i a relaxed, upright posture ad avoid slouchig forward or leaig too far backwards. Lightig Choose a locatio where widows ad lights do ot create glare or reflectio o the display. Use idirect lightig to avoid bright spots reflectig o the display. 16 Usig your VAIO desktop Startig your computer Oce you have all the compoets set up as described i the Gettig Started guide, you ca begi to use your computer. To start up your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Press the power butto o the system uit util the blue power idicator light turs o (1). 2 Press the power butto o your moitor to tur the display o (2). 3 Press the power butto o the speakers to tur the soud o (3). 15 Oce you have started usig your computer, you ca use the shortcut keys o the keyboard to start your system ad lauch your favourite applicatio automatically. If you press the power butto for more tha four secods, the computer will switch itself off.

17 Usig your VAIO desktop Shuttig dow your computer It is importat that you shut dow your computer properly so you do ot lose usaved data. To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto. 2 Click Tur Off Computer. The Tur off computer scree appears. 3 Click Tur Off. Wait for your computer to tur off automatically. The power idicator turs off. 4 Tur off ay peripherals coected to your computer. Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets or to cosider other users. If you are uable to shut dow your computer; - Close all software i use. - Discoect ay USB devices. - Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete> at the same time. If you have ot chaged the default settig, you will eter the Task Maager. Select Tur off from the Shut Dow meu to tur the computer off. Alteratively, press <Alt>+<F4> ad select Tur Off from the scree that appears. If this does ot work, you ca press the power butto for more tha four secods. This will shut dow the computer. This operatio may result i loss of data. If you wat to shut dow the computer for a short period oly, you ca save power by usig the Stadby mode. Go to Start, Tur Off Computer, ad select Stad By 16

The twelve fuctio keys alog the top of the keyboard are used to perform desigated tasks. For example, i may applicatios, <F1> is the Help key. The task associated with each fuctio key may vary from oe applicatio to aother. The <Isert>, <Back Space> ad <Delete> keys eable you to make correctios whe typig. Press Caps Lock oce to activate the uppercase characters. Use the um Lock key to activate the umerical keypad. 19 Prit Scree key (5) umeric keypad area (6) avigatio keys (7) The <Prt Sc> key takes a electroic sapshot of the scree ad moves it to the Widows Clipboard. You ca the paste the screeshot ito a documet ad prit it. This cotais the keys foud o a typical calculator. Use the umeric keypad area to type umbers or to perform mathematical calculatios such as additio ad subtractio. ote that you must press the <um Lock> key to activate the keypad. These keys eable you to move the cursor o the scree. Applicatio key (8) The Applicatio key displays a shortcut meu; pressig this key is equivalet to clickig the right mouse butto. Operator keys (9) Several keys are used i combiatio with at least oe other key: <Ctrl>, <Alt> ad <Shift>. Whe held dow at the same time as aother key, the <Ctrl> (Cotrol) ad <Alt> (Alterate) keys offer aother way to execute commads. For example, i may applicatios, istead of choosig the Save commad from a meu, you ca hold dow <Ctrl> ad press <S> (referred to as <Ctrl>+<S>). The <Shift> key is used to type capital letters or special symbols such ad $.

A gree light idicates whether the Caps Lock, um Lock, ad Scroll Lock fuctios are active. This is equivalet to selectig Search ad the For Files or Folders from the Start meu. Displays the Search Results - Computers widow where you ca locate other computers. Miimizes all displayed widows. Returs all miimized widows to their previous size. Displays the Ru widow. This is equivalet to selectig Ru from the Start meu.

23 Usig your VAIO desktop Combiatios ad fuctios with the F key Combiatios/ Feature F + F + F + PgUp PgD Home Fuctios Moves the view to the ext page up. Moves the view to the ext page dow. Moves the cursor to the begiig of the lie. 22 F + Ed Moves the cursor to the ed of the lie. F + ScrLk Chages the way i which you ca scroll the scree, depedig o the applicatio. Idicators Light O Off um Lock Caps Lock Scroll Lock Turs o whe the umber keys i the umeric keypad are active. Turs o whe the letters appear i uppercase as you type. The <Shift> key lowers the case of typed letters whe Caps Lock is o. Turs o whe the scree scrolls differetly (ot all applicatios support this fuctio). Turs off whe the alphaumeric character keys i the keypad area are active. Turs off whe the letters appear i lowercase as you type (uless you hold dow the <Shift> key). Turs off whe the iformatio moves across the display ormally.

24 Usig your VAIO desktop Usig the shortcut keys Press a shortcut key (S Key) to start your favourite software without havig to follow the path through the Start meu. Use a S Key simply by pressig it. Eve whe your computer is off, you ca press a S Key to start the system ad lauch the appropriate applicatio automatically. If you wat to, you ca use VAIO Actio Setup to chage the fuctios of the S Keys. All six buttos are reprogrammable. 25 Usig your VAIO desktop Usig the mouse The VAIO wheel mouse allows you to cotrol the cursor i a umber of ways. You ca poit to, select, drag, ad scroll objects o the scree usig the buttos ad the wheel. 24 Fuctio Actio poit Move the etire mouse across a flat surface to place the poiter o a item or object. click Press the left butto (1) oce. double-click Press the left butto twice. right-click Press the right butto (2) oce. I may applicatios, this actio displays a cotext-sesitive shortcut meu. drag ad drop Hold the left butto dow while slidig the mouse. The release the butto to drop the object. scroll Tur the cetral wheel (3) to scroll up or dow a page. Or press the wheel oce to lock the scroll actio ad cotrol the movemet by movig the etire mouse. (The scroll fuctio is available oly with applicatios that support a scroll feature.) You ca set the mouse up for left-had use. See the Troubleshootig sectio (page 53) for details.

26 Usig your VAIO desktop Usig the CD-RW ad DVD-ROM drives Your computer is equipped with both a CD-RW ad a DVD-ROM drive. The CD-RW drive reads data from a CD ad writes to a CD-R or CD-RW disc. The DVD-ROM drive reads data from a DVD or CD. To isert a disc, proceed as follows: 1 Tur o the computer. 2 Press the appropriate eject butto to ope the drive. The tray slides out. 3 Place a disc i the tray with the label side facig upwards. Make sure the disc is secure i the cetre of the tray. 4 Close the tray by pushig it getly or by pressig the eject butto. Whe the computer is i Stadby or Hiberate mode, you caot isert or remove a disc. Be sure to seat the disc firmly i the tray. If you do ot seat the disc firmly, you could damage your disc drive ad you may ot be able to ope the tray. Whe you have fiished usig a disc, wait util the LED idicator turs off before pressig the eject butto to remove the disc. If the disc does ot come out whe you press the eject butto, go to My Computer. Select the drive, click the right butto of your mouse ad select Eject. 25 Readig ad writig CDs Your computer is equipped with a CD-RW drive, o which you ca play audio CDs ad CD-ROMs, as well as create your ow CD-RWs ad CD-Rs. To bur CDs, you ca use CD-RW ad CD-R discs: The CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) disc is a data memory medium that ca be used to write, erase ad rewrite a program or other data.

27 Usig your VAIO desktop The CD-R (CD-Recordable) disc is a data memory medium that ca be used to write a program or other data, but the o more tha oce. To achieve optimum performace whe writig data o a CD-RW disc, follow these recommedatios: Before writig to a ew CD-RW, you must first format the disc. If you do ot format the disc, your computer will ot recogize it. To make a CD-R s data readable o aother CD-ROM drive, you eed to close the sessio whe you eject it. To complete this process, follow the istructios icluded with your software. Oly use circular discs. Do ot use discs with ay other shape (star, heart, card, etc.), as this may damage the CD-RW drive. Do ot strike or shake the computer while writig data to a disc. For optimal writig speed, deactivate the screesaver before writig data to a disc. Memory-residet disc utilities may cause ustable operatio or data loss. Deactivate these utilities before writig data to a disc. Whe usig a software applicatio to bur CDs, be sure to exit ad close all other applicatios. Exit ati-virus software before writig data to a disc. ever touch the surface of the disc. Figerprits ad dust o the surface of a disc may cause writig errors. 26 Playig DVDs Your VAIO computer icludes a DVD-ROM drive, o which you ca play audio CDs, CD-ROMs ad DVD-ROMs. To achieve optimum performace whe playig DVD-ROM discs, you should follow these recommedatios: You ca play DVDs i the DVD-ROM drive, usig the MediaBar DVD Player software. Close all ope applicatios before playig a DVD-ROM movie.

28 Usig your VAIO desktop Do ot switch power savig modes while playig a DVD-ROM. If the virus checker is active, you eed to disable it. Do ot use residet disc utilities or residet utilities to speed up the access of discs, because they may cause the system to become ustable. Make sure that the screesaver is deactivated. Regio codes idicators are labelled o the DVD discs to idicate i which regio ad o what type of player you ca play the disc. Uless a '2' or 'all' is labelled o your DVD disc or o the packagig, you caot play the disc o this player. Do ot try to chage the regio code settigs of the DVD-ROM drive. Ay difficulties caused by chagig the regio code settigs of the DVD-ROM drive are out of warraty. 27
