1 COMPUTER MEMORY AND STORAGE CONCEPTS FOR ALL COMPUTER SYSTEMS Memory Concepts: Computer memory is the Random Access Memory that all computer systems use to store the working instructions for the operating system, all application program instructions, and the data you create using those applications. Originally computer memory was measured in Kilobytes: 1,000 bytes of information. A byte is made up of 8 bits of data (a series of zeros and ones representing off and on equivalent to one key press on the computer keyboard) With advances in building memory chips we have gone from Kilobytes to Megabytes to Gigabytes in terms of Random Access Memory capacity. A Megabyte is 1,000,000 one million bytes A Gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 one billion bytes Most modern desktop and laptop computers come with 8 to 16 gigabytes or RAM memory most can be expanded up to 128 gigabytes worth of RAM by replacing smaller capacity RAM modules with larger capacity modules. RAM can be added to desktop computers by filling unused memory slots or by replacing low capacity RAM with higher capacity RAM as long as any replacements are indentical in type. Most modern tablet computers come with 4 to 32 gigabytes of RAM. Tablet computers usually have fixed amounts of internal memory, but can have expanded storage capacity using microsd cards which can hold up to 64 gigabytes worth of data and program instructions. Most smart phones have anywhere between 2 and 16 gigabytes of internal memory. A some can be expanded also using mirosd cards. The number of programs you can run simultaneously will depend on the amount of internal memory you have and the memory requirements of the program to run effectively.

2 LONG TERM STORAGE USING HARD DRIVES AND SSD (SOLID STATE DRIVES) Most desktop and many laptop computers still use mechanical hard drives to store large quantities of operating system and application program instructions along with data we create using our computer. Today most computer systems built within the past two years have storage capacities of at least 1 Terabyte or 1,000,000,000,000 one trillion bytes of information storage capacity. Some of the larger desktops can have hard drives that can store up to 8 to 16 terabytes worth of data. Most ultrabook computers, and some laptops, a few desktop computers, and some tablet computers use solid state drives or large banks of RAM memory clustered together in place of the mechanical drives. These SSD drives do not currently have the capacity of the mechanical drives and the largest generally only have a capacity of 250 gigabytes to 500 gigabytes. Many are much smaller being somewhere between 80 and 150 gigabytes. In most desktop computers we can add multiple hard drives so we can easily increase the long term storage capacity of our systems. Most desktop computers have at least two to four unused drive bays that can be filled with additional hard drives. Desktop computers also have the ability to take large capacity hard drives and divide the storage space up into multiple areas which can represent a new hard drive. We call these partitions. Most laptop computers have hard drives that can easily be replaced by a drive with a larger capacity. You will need to copy your programs and data to some other storage device before installing the new drive. You will have to install the operating system on the new drive unless you use a cloning program to take a mirror image of your old hard drive and transfer it to your new hard drive. Most desktop and laptop computers can also use external storage devices such as flash drives, or external hard drives to increase the long term storage capacity of the computer. Flash drives generally come in 4, 8, 16, and 32 gigabyte capacity a few 64 and 128 gigabyte capacity flash drives are available. Many external hard drives have capacities ranging from 500 gigabytes to 4 terabytes. A few tablet computers and smart phones can now use flash drive storage. The tablet must have a full standard USB B connector or specialized microusb to USB connection. The smart phone must have a microusb connector on the special flash drive.
