4 1. Introduction Overview The magicolor 7450 will replace the magicolor 7300 as the top of the range product in the current printer portfolio. With print speeds of 25 ppm A4 and 13 ppm A3, flexible media handling including A3+, banner printing, heavy stock up to 256 g/m 2, the magicolor 7450 is clearly a powerful versatile office solution that simultaneously functions perfectly as a graphics printer. Contone Contone To generate photo-quality output with great detail and character in fine lines and halftones, the magicolor 7450 offers 600 dpi (High Quality) resolution, also called 600 x 600 x 4-bit contone quality. Through a process called Pulse Width Modulation, the printer is able to achieve very high levels of grayscale (color levels or shades). It produces four bits or 16 levels of gray per pixel for sharper prints and smoother gradients. In contrast, most printers produce one bit or two levels per pixel. How does it work? THE PROCESS On a 600 x 600 dpi printer, a laser beam can be on or off : 2 options, 600 times per inch. Subsequently, a printed dot can have only one size. By using Pulse Width Modulation, the on time of the laser beam, can be controlled. On a 600 x 600 x 4-bit printer, a laser beam can be on or off in up to 2^4 = 16 options, 600 times per inch. Subsequently, a printed dot can have 16 different sizes. THE RESULT Traditional 600 x 600 dpi needs many (i.e. 16) normal size pixels to mix one colour i.e. light green PERCEIVED BY THE HUMAN EYE AS LIGHT GREEN With contone, the same light green can be achieved with one single pixel, by printing a small cyan dot on top of a larger yellow dot. This leaves the other 15 pixels for more details. A traditional 600 x 600 dpi would need all 16 dots to mix the light green. Contone can produce the same light green in one dot, leaving the other 15 for smoother gradients. 8

11 Q & A regarding competition Q: Most competitors have higher print speeds why? A: The magicolor 7450 has been developed as a versatile powerhouse. This means that the focus is on the printer s processing feature set rather than the production capabilities. Q: What is the difference between 600 x 600 x 4-bit contone and HP s ImageREt technology? A: Essentially, the two technologies are not very different. Both employ the concept of varying dot size and printing different dots on top of each other. But, the term ImageREt 4800 implies that the printer can print like a 4800 dpi-class printer*, whereas 600 x 600 x 4-bit contone represents a theoretical 9600 dpi-class resolution. Q: Why is the standard paper input of the magicolor 7450 lower than competitive models? A: Because the magicolor 7450 was also designed as a graphic printer, it essentially does not require big paper handling features because of the traditionally low-volume but high-coverage print jobs. However, up to 3 additional lower feeders can be added and adding one will bring the paper handling up to the level of competition but still at a lower price! Q: Why is the monthly print volume lower than most competitors? A: Because the printer essentially is not meant for production printing, it does not require a high monthly print volume. However, pages is more than enough for a departmental printer. 11
