Unit 14 plan installation and maintenance of hardware in a technology system In this assessment I will be describing the purpose and client requirements for the hardware, I will produce a plan for installing and maintaining in a technology system. I will also produce a detailed plan including reasons why alternative ideas for hardware have/ could be discarded, and lastly I will justify and explain how the system will fulfil its purpose. Cl Estate Agents is a small firm that sells estates to people and customers, and they have just recently brought out one of their competing businesses which mean they have inherited the staff, land and the old computing systems. They are about to employ two new members of staff to carry out regular office duties such as using office word and spread sheets. Both new members will be producing a large number of documents and they will also be keeping a huge amount of customer information in there database. Both members will need access to a printer which will allow them to print a lot of documents. One member will be producing multi-media presentation and also be updating their company website. My purpose at the company will be to maintain and install hardware into a system for the client s requirements. The requirements of the client s technology systems are: The system should be able to boot within a 30second time period, The system should be able to hold a huge amount of save data, The system should be able to run office application such as word and excel, The system should be able to run high powered software such as video editing programs, The system should be able to run a website development program within a short time period, The system should not crash or freeze while running any of the software, The initial assessment on the system was not good; the system was a very low spec that took a long time to boot up and run any modern day applications. The system os was out of date along with most software applications on there.

The system specs are the following; Processor Intel Pentium 3.2GHz Ram 512MB 400MGz Graphics On board Graphics Specialist cards NONE Hard drive -80GB hdd A Cd/dvd drive A floppy disc Operating system windows XP (2002 edition) When I opened the case to check on the hardware I was surprised on not finding a dust filled inside instead it was very clean. A list of hardware and software maintenance that needs to be done to the computing system; Defrag the old hard drive Install software that Is needed Update existing software See if applications run Uninstall software that is not needed Run a full virus scan Upgrade ram Upgrade hard drive capacity Update the os Install a specialist card The system hardware and software will require an upgrade because the spec we have now will not be satisfy the client s requirements and needs. The first thing I would upgrade would be the hard drive because the new members of staff will need the capacity for the documents and multi-media work. The second thing I would upgrade would be the operating system; this will allow the other applications to run better because they would be able to be updated. The third piece of hardware I would install would be a specialist card, especially for the member of staff who will be making multi- media work. The reason to why I would install a specialist card is because for multi-media work you need the extra video memory to render out video or picture files. Fourthly I would upgrade the CPU, mainly for the member of staff that is rendering multi-media work and web development. This is because the faster and more cores the CPU has the less heat it s going to output and the

faster the rendering time would be for video editing. Lastly I would update all applications that the member of staff would be using, this is because with an update the application will become faster, less likely to crash and more features would be on the software which the staff member could utilize. The tools I will be using to update the system What you are doing? method Expected outcome Installing more RAM Check in bios that the motherboard has detected it, Listen for any beeps that could indicate that the RAM has not been installed properly, Check the device manager to see if its detected, No beeps coming from the motherboard, No reported errors when boot up the pc, The amount of RAM increased in the BIOS, device manager and post. Installing an optical drive Check that the optical drive opens and closes, Check that the optical drive reads and writes disc s, Listen for any form of noise that shouldn t be there, The optical drive opens and closes without a problem, No weird noises come from the drive, The optical drive is able to read and write disc s fine. Specialist cards (graphics, network and sound card) Hard Drive Listen for any beeps that occur when the pc boots up, Power on self-test, Check device manager to see if the motherboard has detected, Check that the pci-e cable is plugged in Check that the sata and the ata/molex power cable have been plugged in, Power on self-test, Check that the drive is formatted, Check that the drive is found via the my computer screen, No beeps are heard, The card is detected in the device manager, The pci-e cable is plugged in firmly, The cable are plugged in firmly, Can be found on the post screen, device manager as well as the my computer screen, the hard drive is formatted to either a FAT32 or NTFS, printer Try and print out a document, The document is printed out without an error message, defragging Use either the windows defrag or a 3 rd party version No error messages appear, The defrag reaches 100%, Cable Check the rubber shield, Check the ends for bent pins, The drive should become faster The cable works. Figure 1 1/05/installedRAM.jpg

A maintenance task that I would do is installing a bigger hard drive from around 1-2TB. This is because both users will be saving a lot of documents and multi-media work which consumes a mass amount of storage, another reason is that it will cause the computer to become faster due to having a faster RPM. Another maintenance task that I would perform would be to install more RAM to around 4-8GB. The reason for this is because especially for the multi-media user it will allow more software programs to be open and would allow software that needs a lot of memory to be able to boot up (example of software like this would be Photoshop and Sony Vegas). A software upgrade that I would perform would be the operating system from what it s currently using (windows xp) to windows 7. This is because it would allow certain programs to run more efficiently, less likely to crash as well as certain programs require an up to date operating system to work. Alternatives Bigger Hard Drive Bigger RAM Upgrading to a newer OS Installing a Specialist cards Upgrading the Cpu Installing an Optical drive Why we can t? Cost, the incorrect connector from the psu to the hard drive and not enough sata ports on the motherboard, Not compatible with the motherboard, budget, Cost and capacity, Motherboard doesn t have the correct port bus (e.g. pci), graphics card could be too big for the case and cost Cost and compatibility, Lack of graphics card, it only a cd drive not a dvd drive, may not be able to write on disc s The hardware that I am planning to upgrade is the CPU to a high core modern version to hold high work load, a bigger capacity hard drive to save the multi-media and huge amounts of documents, more RAM for the programs that need it, the OS for more up to date features that people can use, a specialist card for less sound/ graphical errors and faster networking connection and lastly the optical drives to be able to write on DvD s and Cd s These upgrades will be fit for purpose because it will allow the system to run smoother, faster and with less frustration for the user due to programs not crashing and having features that people can easily use. The system reaches both user requirements.

The plan for installing the new hardware has a few constrains. A constraint for the upgrade is the environment; the environment has to be a duct free room with bright clean lighting while having enough room to walk around in, the room also as to have no carpet or at least no material that could cause a static discharge on the system. Another constraint is time due to the fact that the business is losing money while the system is not operational. The last constraint on my plan is the cost and budget I have to work with. Upgrading a system to be able to run high end software program is very costly as well as the business is losing money while the pc is not running.
