Software programs proided with your computer might ary depending on your computer model type and preinstalled operating system. Lenoo ThinkVantage Tools The Lenoo ThinkVantage Tools program guides you to a host of information sources and proides easy access to arious tools to help you work more easily and securely. For more information, see Lenoo ThinkVantage Tools on page 71. Note: The Lenoo ThinkVantage Tools program is only aailable on computers with Windows 7 from Lenoo. ThinkVantage Productiity Center The ThinkVantage Productiity Center program guides you to a host of information and tools to help you set up, understand, maintain, and enhance your computer. Note: The ThinkVantage Productiity Center program is only aailable on computers preinstalled with Windows Vista or Windows XP from Lenoo. Lenoo Welcome The Lenoo Welcome program introduces you to some innoatie built-in features of Lenoo and guides you through a few important setup tasks to help you make the most of your computer. ThinkVantage Rescue and Recoery The ThinkVantage Rescue and Recoery program is a one button recoery and restore solution that includes a set of self recoery tools to help users diagnose computer problems, get help, and recoer from system crashes quickly, een if the primary operating system will not start. ThinkVantage Client Security Solution The ThinkVantage Client Security Solution program is aailable on select Lenoo computers. It helps protect your information, including ital security information like passwords, encryption keys, and electronic credentials, while guarding against unauthorized user access to data. Note: The ThinkVantage Client Security Solution program is only aailable on computers preinstalled with Windows Vista or Windows XP from Lenoo. Password Manager The Password Manager program helps you automatically capture and fill in authentication information for Windows applications and Web sites. 14 Power Manager The Power Manager program proides conenient, flexible, and complete power management for your ThinkCentre computer. By using the Power Manager program, you can adjust your power settings to achiee the best balance between system performance and power saing. Product Recoery The Product Recoery program enables you to restore the contents of the hard disk drie to the factory default settings. ThinkVantage System Update The ThinkVantage System Update program helps you keep the software on your system up-to-date by downloading and installing software packages (TVT applications, deice driers, BIOS flashes, and other third party applications). Some examples of software that you should keep updated are programs proided by Lenoo, such as the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recoery program and the ThinkVantage Productiity Center program. Fingerprint Software The integrated fingerprint reader proided on some keyboards enables you to enroll your fingerprint and associate it with your power-on password, hard disk drie password, and Windows password. As a result, fingerprint authentication can replace passwords and enable simple and secure user access. A fingerprint reader keyboard is aailable with select computers or can be purchased for computers that support this option. System Migration Assistant The System Migration Assistant program is a software tool that enables system administrators and indiidual users to migrate a work enironment from one computer to another. The System Migration Assistant program is aailable on some computers. Lenoo ThinkVantage Toolbox The Lenoo ThinkVantage Toolbox program helps you maintain your computer, improe computing security, diagnose computer problems, get familiar with the innoatie technologies proided by Lenoo, and get more information about your computer. See Lenoo ThinkVantage Toolbox on page 66 for detailed information. Note: The Lenoo ThinkVantage Toolbox program is only aailable on computers preinstalled with Windows 7 from Lenoo. Lenoo System Toolbox The Lenoo System Toolbox program is preinstalled on your computer. This diagnostic program works through the Windows operating system to diagnose hardware problems and report operating-system-controlled settings that can cause hardware failures. See Lenoo System Toolbox on page 67 for more information. Note: The Lenoo System Toolbox program is only aailable on computers preinstalled with Windows Vista or Windows XP from Lenoo. PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recoery The PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recoery diagnostic program is preinstalled on your hard disk drie. It is part of the Rescue and Recoery workspace on each Lenoo computer to diagnose hardware problems and report operating-systemcontrolled settings that can cause hardware failures. Use the PC-Doctor for Rescue 6 User Guide

15 Locations and Recoery diagnostic program if you are unable to start the Windows operating system. See PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recoery on page 67 for more information. Adobe Reader The Adobe Reader program is a tool used to iew, print, and search PDF documents. Antiirus software Your computer comes with antiirus software that you can use to detect and eliminate iruses. Lenoo proides a full ersion of antiirus software on your hard disk drie with a free 30-day subscription. After 30 days, you must renew the license to continue receiing the antiirus program updates. Locating connectors on the front of your computer Figure 1 shows the locations of the connectors on the front of your computer. Figure 1. 16 Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the locations of the connectors on the rear of your computer. Some connectors on the rear of your computer are color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer. Figure 2. 17 Connector Description Audio line-in connector Used to receie audio signals from an external audio deice, such as a stereo system. When you attach an external audio deice, a cable is connected between the audio line-out connector of the deice and the audio line-in connector of the computer. Audio line-out connector Used to send audio signals from the computer to external deices, such as powered stereo speakers (speakers with built-in amplifiers), headphones, multimedia keyboards, or the audio line-in connector on a stereo system or other external recording deice. DisplayPort connector Used to attach a high-performance monitor, a direct-drie monitor, or other deices that use a DisplayPort connector. Ethernet connector Used to attach an Ethernet cable for a local area network (LAN). Note: To operate the computer within FCC Class B limits, use a Category 5 Ethernet cable. Microphone connector Used to attach a microphone to your computer when you want to record sound or if you use speech-recognition software. PS/2 keyboard connector (optional) PS/2 mouse connector (optional) Used to attach a keyboard that uses a PS/2 keyboard connector. Used to attach a mouse, a trackball, or other pointing deices that use a PS/2 mouse connector. Serial port Used to attach an external modem, a serial printer, or other deices that use a 9-pin serial port. USB connector Used to attach a deice that requires a USB connector, such as a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, a USB scanner, or a USB printer. If you hae more than eight USB deices, you can purchase a USB hub, which you can use to connect additional USB deices. VGA monitor connector Used to attach a VGA monitor or other deices that use a VGA monitor connector. Chapter 1. Product oeriew 9

You can add dries to your computer to increase storage capacity and enable your computer to read other types of media. Your computer comes with the following factory-installed dries: A Serial Adanced Technology Attachment (SATA) optical drie in bay 1 A 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drie in bay 5 (installed in some models) Chapter 1. 20 Internal dries are installed in bays. In this manual, the bays are referred to as bay 1, bay 2, and so on. Figure 5 shows the locations of the drie bays. Figure 5. 21 Chapter 2. Installing or replacing hardware This chapter proides instructions on how to install or replace hardware for your computer. Handling static-sensitie deices Do not open the static-protectie package containing the new part until the defectie part has been remoed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part. Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer components and parts. When you handle parts and other computer components, take these precautions to aoid static-electricity damage: Installing or replacing hardware Limit your moement. Moement can cause static electricity to build up around you. Always handle parts and other computer components carefully. Handle PCI cards, memory modules, system boards, and microprocessors by the edges. Neer touch any exposed circuitry. Preent others from touching the parts and other computer components. Before you replace a new part, touch the static-protectie package containing the part to a metal expansion-slot coer or other unpainted metal surface on the computer for at least two seconds. This reduces static electricity in the package and your body. When possible, remoe the new part from the static-protectie packaging, and install it directly in the computer without setting the part down. When this is not possible, place the static-protectie package that the part came in on a smooth, leel surface and place the part on it. Do not place the part on the computer coer or other metal surface. This section proides instructions on how to install or replace hardware for your computer. You can expand the capabilities of your computer and maintain your computer by installing or replacing hardware. 22 Installing external options You can connect external options to your computer, such as external speakers, a printer, or a scanner. For some external options, you must install additional software in addition to making the physical connection. When installing an external option, see Locating connectors on the front of your computer on page 7 and Locating connectors on the rear of your computer on page 8 to identify the required connector. Then, use the instructions that come with the option to help you make the connection and install any software or deice driers that are required for the option. Remoing the computer coer Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Important safety information in the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer. To obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide, goto: This section proides instructions on how to remoe the computer coer. CAUTION: Turn off the computer and wait three to fie minutes to let the computer cool before remoing the computer coer. To remoe the computer coer, do the following: 1. Remoe any media from the dries and turn off all attached deices and the computer. 2. Disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 3. Disconnect the power cords, Input/Output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the computer. See Locating connectors on the front of your computer on page 7 and Locating connectors on the rear of your computer on page Remoe any locking deice that secures the computer coer, such as a padlock or an integrated cable lock. 23 6. Press the coer-release button on the side of the computer and slide the coer to the rear of the computer to remoe the coer. Figure 6. Remoing the computer coer Remoing and reinstalling the front bezel Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Important safety information in the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer. To obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide, goto: This section proides instructions on how to remoe and reinstall the front bezel. To remoe and reinstall the front bezel, do the following: 1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 2. Remoe the computer coer. 24 3. Remoe the front bezel by releasing the three plastic tabs on the left side and pioting the front bezel outward. Figure 7. Remoing the front bezel 4. To reinstall the front bezel, align the three plastic tabs on the right side of the front bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then piot the front bezel inwards until it snaps into position on the left side. 5. To complete the installation, go to Completing the parts replacement on page 43. Installing or replacing a PCI card Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Important safety information in the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer. To obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide, goto: This section proides instructions on how to install or replace a PCI card. Your computer has two standard PCI card slots, one PCI Express x1 card slot, and one PCI Express x16 graphics card slot. To install or replace a PCI card, do the following: 1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 2. Remoe the computer coer. See Remoing the computer coer on page User Guide

26 4. If you are installing a PCI card, remoe the appropriate metal slot coer. If you are replacing an old PCI card, grasp the old card that is currently installed and gently pull it out of the slot. Figure 9. Remoing a PCI card Notes: a. The card fits tightly into the card slot. If necessary, alternate moing each side of the card a small amount until it is remoed from the card slot. b. If the card is held in place by a retaining latch, press the card retaining latch 1 as shown to disengage the latch. Grasp the card and then gently pull it out of the slot. 5. Remoe the new PCI card from its static-protectie package. 6. Install the new card into the appropriate slot on the system board. See Locating parts on the system board on page 11. Note: If you are installing a PCI Express x16 graphics card, make sure the memory slot retaining clips are closed before you install the graphics card. 18 User Guide

Your computer has four slots for installing or replacing DDR3 DIMMs that proide up to a maximum of 16 GB system memory. When installing or replacing a memory module, use the following guidelines: Use 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GB DDR3 DIMMs in any combination up to a maximum of 16 GB. Install memory modules in the sequence of DIMM 1, DIMM 3, DIMM 2, and DIMM 4. See Locating parts on the system board on page 11. Chapter 2. Installing or replacing hardware 19

28 To install or replace a memory module, do the following: 1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 2. Remoe the computer coer. 32 Replacing the battery Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Important safety information in the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer. To obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide, goto: Your computer has a special type of memory that maintains the date, time, and settings for built-in features, such as parallel-port assignments (configuration). A battery keeps this information actie when you turn off the computer. The battery normally requires no charging or maintenance throughout its life; howeer, no battery lasts foreer. If the battery fails, the date, time, and configuration information (including passwords) are lost. An error message is displayed when you turn on the computer. Refer to the Lithium battery notice in the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide for information about replacing and disposing of the battery. To replace the battery, do the following: 1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 2. Remoe the computer coer. See Remoing the computer coer on page Locate the battery. Slide the power supply assembly to the front of the computer and then lift it out of the chassis. 7. Ensure that the new power supply assembly is the correct replacement. If your new power supply assembly has a oltage-selection switch, ensure that you set the oltage-selection switch to match the oltage aailable at your electrical outlet. If necessary, use a ballpoint pen to slide the oltage-selection switch to a different position. If the oltage supply range in your local country or region is V ac, set the switch to 115 V. If the oltage supply range in your local country or region is V ac, set the switch to 230 V. 8. Install the new power supply assembly into the chassis so that the screw holes in the power supply assembly align with those in the chassis. 9. Install and tighten the four screws to secure the power supply assembly. Note: Use only screws proided by Lenoo. 10. Reconnect the power supply assembly cables to the system board and each of the dries. 11. Secure the power supply assembly cables with the cable clips and ties in the chassis. CAUTION: The heat sink and fan assembly might be ery hot. Turn off the computer and wait three to fie minutes to let the computer cool before remoing the computer coer. To replace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 2. Remoe the computer coer. 36 6. Carefully remoe the four screws 1 that secure the heat sink and fan assembly to the system board. Note: Carefully remoe the four screws from the system board to aoid any possible damage to the system board. The four screws cannot be remoed from the heat sink and fan assembly. Figure 21. You might hae to gently twist the heat sink and fan assembly to free it from the microprocessor. b. Do not touch the thermal grease while handling the heat sink and fan assembly. 8. Position the new heat sink and fan assembly on the system board so that the four screws are aligned with the holes on the system board. Note: Position the new heat sink and fan assembly so that the heat sink and fan assembly cable is toward the microprocessor fan connector on the system board. 9. Alternate tightening each screw a small and equal amount until the heat sink and fan assembly is secured to the system board. Do not oer-tighten the screws. 10. Connect the heat sink and fan assembly cable to the microprocessor fan connector on the system board. See Locating parts on the system board on page User Guide

Remoe the hard disk drie cage from the chassis by sliding it outward. 7. Pull on the blue handle 3 to release and remoe the hard disk drie from the drie cage. 8. Flex the sides of the blue bracket to remoe the hard disk drie from the bracket. 9. To install a new hard disk drie into the blue bracket, flex the bracket and align pin 1, pin 2, pin 3, and pin 4 on the bracket with the corresponding holes in the hard disk drie. Slide the new hard disk drie into the drie cage until it snaps into position. 30 User Guide

39 11. Align the drie cage piot pin with the slot 1 in the upper drie cage and slide the hard disk drie cage into the chassis. 12. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new hard disk drie. 13. Press down on the metal latch 2 and piot the drie cage into place, and then slide it to the front of the computer until it snaps into position. Note: There are two arrows, one on the upper drie cage and one on the hard disk drie cage. The arrows are aligned when the hard disk drie is in the proper position. Figure 24.
