5 IBM FlashSystem V840 Quick Start Guide Total installation and configuration take approximately 4 hours. For detailed installation instructions iew the Installing topic in the IBM Knowledge Center for FlashSystem V840. Prerequisites for installation (customer task) Workstation with two or more USB ports and supported web browser, for initial configuration. USB flash drie(s) shipped with the 9846/9848-AE1 storage enclosure. Ethernet connection. Rack spaces for the two 2U 9846/9848-AC1 control enclosures, and the 2U AE1 storage enclosure. For ease of cabling, allocate a contiguous 6U space. Fibre Channel host connections, set up by the customer. If the customer chooses to use a Power Distribution Unit (PDU), network and power proisions for the PDU must be in place. Collect and record the following required infrastructure information, using the worksheets in the Planning section of the FlashSystem V840 Knowledge Center (customer task) Management IP address and serice IP address information alues for the enclosures: For the AC1 control enclosures, the management IP address, node 1 serice address, and node 2 serice address. For the AE1 storage enclosure, the management IP address, canister 1 serice address, and canister 2 serice address. Additional management address information alues: Primary DNS serer. NTP serer information if used to set the date and time on the AC1 enclosures. SNMP manager. SMTP gateway address and name. AC1 SMTP "From" address. AE1 SMTP "From" address. Customer alert group name (optional). Call Home information alues: Contact name. Alternate contact name. address. Phone number (primary and alternate). Off-shift phone number (primary and alternate). System location, including company name, street address, city, state or proince, postal code, and country or region. The following figure shows the two AC1 control enclosures and AE1 storage enclosure, installed in a contiguous 6U space in the rack. Copyright IBM Corp

AC1 control enclosures and AE1 storage enclosure 1 AC1 control enclosure 1 2 AC1 control enclosure 2 3 AE1 storage enclosure Install the support rails for the three enclosures (SSR task) It is easier to install all the rails before the two AC1 enclosures and AE1 enclosure are installed. For ease of cabling, install the three sets of rails in a contiguous 6U space. 1. Install the support rails for both of the AC1 control enclosures. 2. Install the support rails for the AE1 storage enclosure. Install the two AC1 control enclosures (SSR task) 1. Install the first AC1 control enclosure in the rack. 2. Install the cable arm management assembly. 3. Connect the power cords and other cables to the rear of the enclosure. 4. Route the cables and power cords along the cable management arm and secure them with cable ties or hook-and-loop fasteners. 5. Connect the power cables to the PDU or other power source. 6. Repeat steps 1-5toinstall the second AC1 control enclosure in the rack. Connect the two AC1 control enclosures to the Ethernet network (SSR task) 1. Connect an Ethernet cable to Ethernet port 1 (the leftmost port) on both of the AC1 nodes. 2. Connect the other end of each cable to the management network. Install the AE1 storage enclosure in the rack (SSR task) Important: The enclosure and battery modules are shipped separately. You must install the battery modules after you install the enclosure in the rack. 1. Install the AE1 storage enclosure in the rack. 2. 7 Connect the AE1 storage enclosure to the Ethernet network (SSR task) 1. Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on each canister in the enclosure. 2. Connect the other end of each cable to the management network. Connect the AC1 nodes to the AE1 storage enclosure and hosts (SSR task) Next, you create interconnect links between the AE1 storage enclosure and the two AC1 nodes, and connect the hosts to the AC1 nodes. These connections are made by using the three, four-port Fibre Channel (FC) adapters in each AC1 node, and the four FC interface cards in the AE1 storage enclosure, as shown in the following figure. An AC1 FC port is identified by the expansion slot number and port number. Plug the two power cords into properly grounded electrical outlets, such as on a PDU. 2. Wait for the enclosure power LED on the front panel to come on, blink and then come on solid, before proceeding with the installation. This process can take up to 10 minutes. Configure the AE1 storage enclosure IP address and optional encryption (SSR task) You set up the storage enclosure IP address and optional encryption feature by running the USB flash drie initialization tool on a workstation. The workstation must hae two USB ports and a network connection to the storage enclosure. 9 Configure the AE1 storage enclosure IP address and optional encryption (SSR task) 1. Insert the supplied USB flash drie into one of the USB ports on the workstation. 2. Start the initialization tool. For Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit), open the USB flash drie and double-click InitTool.bat For Linux, locate the root directory of the USB flash drie (usually in the /media/ directory) and then type: sh InitTool.sh For Apple MacOS X, locate the root directory of the USB flash drie (usually in the /Volumes/ directory) and then type: sh InitTool.sh The initialization tool wizard starts. 10 Configure the AE1 storage enclosure IP address and optional encryption (SSR task) Configure the IP address on an enclosure without an encryption license (SSR task). 1. When asked if you want to actiate data encryption, click No. 2. Enter the management IP address of the AE1 enclosure when prompted to do so. 3. When the wizard is finished, remoe the USB flash drie from the workstation and insert the USB drie into the USB port on the left canister (port 1 in Figure 3) as iewed from the rear of the enclosure. 4. When the process completes, the identify LED, which is blue, goes off, and the canister status LED comes on solid. Figure 4 shows the location of the identify and status LEDs. 5. Remoe the USB flash drie from the canister and reinsert the USB flash drie into a USB port on the workstation. 6. If the initialization tool process completed successfully, click Finish. Locate the three USB flash dries that were included with the storage enclosure in the documentation package. All three USB dries are used in this procedure. 1. When asked if you want to actiate data encryption, click Yes. 2. Enter the management IP address of the AE1 enclosure when prompted to do so. 3. When the wizard is finished, remoe the USB flash drie from the workstation and insert the USB drie into the USB port on the left canister (port 1 in Figure 3) as iewed from the rear of the enclosure. 4. When the process completes, the identify LED, which is blue, goes off, and the canister status LED comes on solid. Figure 4 shows the location of the identify and status LEDs. 5. Remoe the USB flash drie from the canister and reinsert the USB flash drie into a USB port on the workstation. 6. Click Backup Drie on the initialization menu page. 7. Insert one of the remaining two USB dries that are supplied with the system into another USB port on the workstation. This is the target USB drie. 8. Confirm the drie location of the target USB key and then click Copy. After the USB has been copied, remoe the target USB drie from the workstation. 9. Repeat steps 6-8tomake a second copy of the encryption key. Attention: It is extremely important to create at least two copies of the USB flash dries as a safeguard of the encryption key. The customer should make additional copies of the key on other forms of storage as well. 10. After making a minimum of two copies of the key, click Next. 11. 11 Complete the AE1 storage enclosure setup (SSR task) Important: You must hae the Call Home contact information worksheet, SMTP gateway address and name, and NTP serer information on hand before proceeding. 1. When the AE1 storage enclosure management GUI login screen is displayed, log in to the GUI with user name superuser and password passw0rd. Do not change the password now, as a new password will be selected in a later step by the customer. 2. Use the setup wizard to enter a system name, and set up the date and time function using the NTP serer information. 3. Enter the Call Home information. 4. Create a RAID 5 array that includes all of the flash modules. (RAID 5 protects against flash module failures as well as chip and chip plane failures.) 5. When the wizard finishes creating the array, it exits to the management GUI. 6. Next, using the storage enclosure management GUI, create 16 olumes on the array. 16 olumes proide the best utilization of the processor cores in the control enclosures, and maintains optimal I/O queue balancing among the olumes. Configure each olume as a managed full olume for best flexibility and performance. To determine the size of each of the 16 olumes, complete the following steps: a. Multiply the total usable capacity (displayed in the management GUI) by 0.9 to allow ample headroom for write leeling and housekeeping. Round down to the nearest whole number of GB. b. Diide this alue by 16 to determine the size of each olume. For example, for 12 TB of usable capacity, each olume is sized as (0.9 * 12 TB) / 16 = 675 GB. Verify the AC1 control enclosure installation (SSR task) 1. Press the power-control button 1 in Figure 5) on the first AC1 control enclosure. 2. Verify that the green power LED is lit. 3. Verify that the node is booting successfully. The system-error LED ( 7 in Figure 5) blinks if a system error occurs. If the battery needs to be charged, the battery status LED blinks and the system logon prompt might not appear. 4. Repeat steps 1-3toerify the second AC1 control enclosure Figure 5. 12 Initial setup of the AC1 control enclosures (SSR task) Important: Hae the AC1 control enclosure 1 2 management IP address and the cluster 3 name on hand before proceeding. 1. Configure an Ethernet port on the workstation to enable Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) configuration of its IP address and DNS settings, or configure a static IP address. 2. Connect an Ethernet cable between the Ethernet port on the workstation that was configured in step 1, and the technician port on the rear panel of one of the AC1 enclosures, shown in Figure 6. Verify this connection before proceeding. 3. Open a supported browser and browse to address The browser is automatically directed to the initialization tool. 4. Follow the instructions to configure the system with a management IP address and a cluster name. 5. After you complete the initialization process, disconnect the cable between the workstation and the technician port Figure 6. AC1 control enclosure technician port 1 Technician port The customer can now open a supported web browser and access the AC1 control enclosure management GUI using the management IP address. sc00873 Verify and update the system firmware and software (customer task) After the initial configuration of the hardware is complete, IBM strongly recommends that the customer check to see whether a later leel of firmware and software is aailable and update to that leel. See Upgrading > Updating the System Automatically in the FlashSystem V840 IBM Knowledge Center. After the installation process is completed (customer task) The clustered AC1 system is ready for the customer to log in to the AC1 control enclosure management GUI, create a new password, configure the date and time, reiew licensed functions, and perform a final check of the cluster. The customer then uses the AC1 control enclosure management GUI to complete the following tasks: 1. Discoer the 16 olumes that are already created on the AE1 storage enclosure. 16 MDisks should be isible. 2. Place the MDisks in appropriate storage pools. 3. Create the host-facing olumes. 4. Create the host serers and applications. 5. Map or bind the host-facing olumes to the external hosts. 6.
