1 Hardware Announcement October 11, 2005 IBM 3996 Optical Library offers expansive optical storage for data retention Overview The IBM 3996 Optical Library is designed for excellent reliability and performance. The large-scale, externally attached, 3996 uses 5.25-inch 30 GB Ultra Density Optical (UDO) technology and is available for the IBM i5 and iseries family of workstations and servers. The 3996 is available in three models and: Provides up to three times the capacity of previous optical libraries offered by IBM Supports Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and rewritable recording technologies in a single library Includes a barcode reader as an optional feature Has a low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI interface You can choose from three models: The 3996 Model 032 has the physical capacity to hold optical discs capable of holding up to 960 GB. Each of the 32 media slots can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB of optical storage. The Model 032 has one 30 GB optical disc drive, and an option for adding a second drive. The 3996 Model 080 has the physical capacity to hold optical discs capable of holding up to 2.4 TB. Each of the 80 media slots can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB of optical storage. The Model 080 has two 30 GB optical disc drives with an option of increasing to four drives. When the additional drives are added, the capacity of the Model 080 becomes 2.16 TB. The 3996 Model has the physical capacity to hold optical discs capable of holding up to 5.2 TB. Each of the media slots can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB of optical storage. The Model has two 30 GB optical disc drives with an option of increasing to four drives. When the additional drives are added, the capacity of the Model becomes 4.98 TB. 2 Description The 3996 is offered in three models and is an externally attached storage library that uses 30-GB optical disc technology. It is available for use with the IBM i5 and iseries family of workstations and servers, and attaches through a PCI-X Controller (#5702 or #5705). The 3996 must be the only device attached to an adapter on an i5 or iseries that uses i5/os V5.3. The 3996 supports Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and rewritable recording technologies in a single library. A barcode reader is available as an option. The 3996 uses a low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI interface. Media Rewritable 30 GB Media 10pk: 30 GB media. Provides ten rewritable WORM 30 GB Media 10pk: Provides ten WORM 30 GB media. Note: The maximum of these features that may be ordered (in any combination) with the 3996 is two for the 3996 Model 032; for the 3996 Model 080 and 3996 Model, the maximum is four.
