1 PROGRAMMABLE MARQUEE DISPLAYS INTRODUCTION: AVG Uticor Marquees can be found in numerous applications throughout all industries. In 1996, a CONTROL ENGINEERING Magazine study named the AVG Uticor brand of Marquees as the most specified and recognized Marquee product line in industry. Marquees are intended for use where messages need to be conveyed over large visual distances up LED Marquees by AVG UTICOR to 400 ft. (121.9 m). Hence, they have larger display areas and character heights than are found in AVG Uticor's Programmable Message Display product line. These extremely versatile products, enable your PLC or control system to display vital production status or alarm messages to plant-floor personnel in real time. AVG Uticor offers three lines of Marquees: LED-based Master Marquees LED-based Slave Marquees LED-based Numerical Marquees: A Master Marquee is alphanumeric and stores up to 175, 80-character messages per 16K of memory. These messages and their characteristics (such as blinking, centering, scrolling, etc.) are programmed using a programming software (runs on a PC) available free from AVG Uticor. A Master Marquee continuously polls the connected PLC for a message number and several control parameters (may or may not be programmable in some cases). Based on the control parameters, the Master Marquee can display the message, send the message to one or a group of Slave displays (described below), or it can broadcast the message over Uticor Slave Network. A PC can also control the Master Marquee. Master Marquees come in two configurations, Red LED (PMD 3000 Series) and Tricolor LED (PMD 3600 Series). Slave Marquees do not store messages. They are typically used with a Master Marquee, Master Message Display, Message Controller or a Touchscreen Programmable Graphical Interface. A Master Marquee, Master Message Display, Message Controller, or Touchscreen Program-mable Graphical Interface can drive a network of several Slaves. Each Slave used on a network has a unique address. Addressing scheme allows a message to be sent to one, several, or all Slaves on the network. Slave Marquees include PMD 1100, PMD 1200, and PMD The LED-based Numerical Marquee comes in a 4 digit (PMD 1404) or 6 digit (PMD 1406) versions. With 7-segmented LEDs, these displays only show numerical values. Any PMD 1404 or 1406 can be used as a Master to drive additional PMD 1404 or 1406 units as Slaves. 76

2 SELECTING THE RIGHT MODEL The PMD Master Marquee receives Message inputs from a PC or PLC and outputs Messages to one or more Slave units installed at strategic locations throughout the user's plant. A PC can be connected for programming purposes. AVG UTICOR offers a variety of Marquee models to meet different application needs. A user will select a Marquee based on following criteria: Visibility Distance (size of characters) Number of lines on display Characters per line PLC Connectivity In addition to above characteristics, Slave Marquees offer a wide variety of features. A list of features is given later in this section. Please refer to data sheets of each model for more information on a model. 77

3 PMD MARQUEE DISPLAYS CONTINUED MARQUEE FEATURES Slave Marquees offer many features that enhance your ability to display pertinent information. Here s a brief listing of some of the more common features and what they are (Every model may not support all of the following features): Blinking Chained Message Circular Message Queue Data Log Invisible Messages Off-line Programming On-line Programming Real-Time Clock Scrolling Message A character, word, or message flashes on and off at a user-programmable rate; used to attract attention to a message of high priority. Links up to 115 individual messages together and displays at a user-defined rate. A list of messages displayed in the order that they are triggered according to their message display time. The list wraps around from the last message back to the first message and continues to cycle through the queue until the user makes a change. An area of memory set aside for a time- and date-stamped historical record of events in the unit. Messages sent to a printer or Slave Marquee, but not to the Master Marquee s own display. Message programs are developed with programming software and stored to disk. The message file can then be uploaded to the Master Marquee unit. The computer does not need to be connected to the unit for this programming process. Master Marquee unit is programmed directly from the computer. The unit must be connected to the programming computer. With on-line programming, the user can develop screens while the display unit is running. This allows modification of the screens without having to take the unit off line. A clock that indicates the passage of actual time. A message that moves from the bottom of the display to the top, or from the right of the display to the left. 78

4 PMD 1100 SLAVE MARQUEE DISPLAY 1 Line 20 Characters 2" High Red LED Characters Eight International Character Sets 4 Variable Data Sets of 5 digits each NEMA 12 enclosure The PMD 1100 is a slim-line alphanumeric slave marquee that uses attention-getting RED LED colors to indicate equipment status instantly. On the top and bottom of the unit are knockouts for routing wires inside the unit to connect service power and communication cabling. These slave units display information received from a Master Message Display, or a PowerPanel Touchscreen Programmable Graphics Interface, computer, or other intelligent device with serial communication capabilities. Messages can be stationary, blinking, centered, or smoothly scrolling from right to left. The PMD 1100 can also display a bar graph. Each PMD 1100 has an RS-422A serial repeater port that lets you daisy-chain numerous groups of displays together; or, if you use RS-485A communications, you can have up to 32 units on the same communication line. Yet, by assigning each unit a unique address, only the desired message will be displayed at each station. 79

8 PMD 1404/1406 NUMERIC MARQUEE DISPLAY FEATURES 1 Line (PMD 1404) 4 (PMD 1404) or 6 (PMD 1406) Digits 4" (101.6 mm) High Red LED Digits Seven-Segment Digit Selectable decimal point and colon (PMD 1406) NEMA 12 enclosure The low-cost PMD 1404/1406 are numerical marquee displays that use attention-getting RED, 7-segment LED numerals to indicate equipment status instantly. These versatile displays can be stacked up to eight units high and wall-mounted or suspended above production aisles. These units display numerical data received from a Master Message Display, PowerPanel Touchscreen Programmable Graphics Interface, computer, or other intelligent device with serial communication capabilities. PMD 1404/1406 displays have a slave port allowing them to be networked. Options available include a clock module, counter module, and timed-printing module. The clock option allows the unit to operate as a real-time clock, while the counter module allows the unit to be configured as either a rate or accumulative counter. The third option allows the user to print hard copy of displayed data. The counter and clock options have parallel inputs, while the timed-printing module is serial. 13 Several versions of the PMD 3100 Series are available. They differ in the way they can communicate with external devices and/or PLCs. PMD 3100 Messages are triggered via the 16-bit parallel port. Note: In the following models, the PMD 3100 parallel port, the associated Message Control Terminals, and the Power In/Power Out Terminals have been removed and replaced by the PLC interface connector located on the interface board. Please be advised that all of the direct PLC interface units require you to punch a hole to accommodate the wiring. Please be careful of metal filings. PMD 3150 is essentially a PMD 3100 which directly interfaces to an Allen-Bradley PLC2, PLC3, or PLC5 through Remote I/O Block Transfer or Data Highway/Plus. Each of these modes operates independently from the other and the PMD 3150 can be configured to communicate using any one of them. PMD 3150 has all of the PMD 3100 features, but receives communication through twinaxial cable ("blue hose"). PMD 3160 is very similar to the PMD3100 and contains an interface to Siemens/TI Series 545 CPU (and the 560 and 565 CPUs used in conjunction with the Siemens/TI RCC module) which have the RS-485 remote I/O module. The PMD 3160 will appear as an Remote Base Controller (RBC) to the Siemens/TI PLC. PMD 3160 can also listen to an existing RBC and use the information from it. PMD 3180 has all of the PMD 3100 capabilities but contains support for a Genius Network Adapter (GENA) board which allows the PMD 3180 to be configured as a node on the Genius I/O system. The PMD 3180 can be configured as an I/O block on a Genius I/O system and will receive data from a bus interface module. A bus interface module is typically a PLC with a Genius bus controller module or a PCIM card installed in a personal computer. The PMD 3180 will exist on the Genius I/O network as an I/O block broadcasting its inputs to the bus and reading the outputs sent to it by the bus controller. 88

The PMD 3600 Series uses attention-getting Tricolor (red, green, amber) LED colors in 2", 4", 6" or 8" (50.8, 101.6, 152.4, or mm) character heights to indicate equipment status instantly. These versatile displays also let you adjust character and line heights, add blinking, scrolling, and unveiling effects, and feature multiple messages simultaneously. The PMD 3600 Series offers suspended mounting using either the eyebolts on top or mounting kits that allow adjustable angled viewing. Two knockouts are provided in the PMD 3600's steel case for the routing of wires. Fuses, connectors, and switches are accessed by removing the back panel. A scratch-resistant lens/filter on the front panel covers the LED field and protects the inside of the unit. 93

They differ in the way they can communicate with external devices and/or PLCs. PMD 3600 Messages are triggered via the 16-bit parallel port. Note: In the following models, the PMD 3600 parallel port, the associated Message Control Terminals, and the Power In/Power Out Terminals have been removed and replaced by the PLC interface connector located on the interface board. Please be advised that all of the direct PLC interface units require you to punch a hole to accommodate the wiring. Please be careful of metal filings. PMD 3650 is essentially a PMD 3600 which directly interfaces to an Allen-Bradley PLC2, PLC3, or PLC5 through Remote I/O Block Transfer or Data Highway/Plus. Each of these modes operates independently from the other and the PMD 3650 can be configured to communicate using any one of them. PMD 3650 has all of the PMD 3600 features, but receives communication through twinaxial cable ("blue hose"). PMD 3660 is very similar to the PMD3600 and contains an interface to Siemens/TI Series 545 CPU (and the 560 and 565 CPUs used in conjunction with the Siemens/TI RCC module) which have the RS-485 remote I/O module. The PMD 3660 will appear as an Remote Base Controller (RBC) to the Siemens/TI PLC. PMD 3660 can also listen to an existing RBC and use the information from it. PMD 3680 has all of the PMD 3600 capabilities but contains support for a Genius Network Adapter (GENA) board which allows the PMD 3680 to be configured as a node on the Genius I/O system. The PMD 3680 can be configured as an I/O block on a Genius I/O system and will receive data from a bus interface module. A bus interface module is typically a PLC with a Genius bus controller module or a PCIM card installed in a personal computer. The PMD 3680 will exist on the Genius I/O network as an I/O block broadcasting its inputs to the bus and reading the outputs sent to it by the bus controller. 94
