..:: Introduction ::.. Foxconn is a name that many of our reader may or may not be all too familiar with. Foxconn is a little known name in the world of enthusiast motherboards, but as of late they too have begun to market some of their own products that have been able to keep up quite well with some of the high performance, and high price options available. Foxconn is a major manufacturer of motherboards, and they also manufacturer a great deal of boards for other companies such as Intel. Today, we re taking a look at the first of two Foxconn motherboards based off the i915p/g chipset series, the 915A03-P-8EKRS. Obviously Foxconn, much like Gigabyte is cases, isn t the most efficient when it comes to product names as this has to be one of the longest ones I ve come across to date, other than a few products from GB. With the reputation for quality that Foxconn has throughout the industry, will they be able to pull off something special with these motherboards, or will they simply fall into the long line of middle of the road products? Read on to find out!..:: 915A03-P-8EKRS Specifications ::.. Processor - Designed for Intel 90nm Prescott LGA775 Processors w/533/800mhz FSB - Supports Intel Hyper-Threading Technology 1 / 12

As we have yet to deal with a Foxconn branded motherboard up to this point, heading into the review we were a bit stumped as to what we should expect. We took a look through some of Foxconn s product documentation, and found that overall Foxconn tends to put out solid packages for the cost, though they usually rate around middle of the road. They have some advantages versus other manufacturer packages, as well as some other disadvantages. The main items of necessity are all included, though some might wish for some additional items to be thrown into the mix to further add to the overall value of the product. Let s see exactly what comes with the 915A03-P-8EKRS, and see how it rates on our scale when the target market and price are factored in. To start things off, we have the various documentation items for the 915A03-P-8EKRS. In past reviews, we ve seen manufacturers include board layout diagrams that also feature a fold-out installation guide with them. Foxconn has somewhat gone down this route in that they offer a layout diagram, but there is no fold-out section as far as that topic goes. This item has steadily 3 / 12

been making headway into more product packages to give the user one diagram to look at rather than hunting through the manual to find a certain connector or page. Foxconn has also provided two manuals, one for detailing the control over the Serial ATA RAID feature provided by Intel s ICH6-R Southbridge, and another for the typical tasks of BIOS, Drivers, etc. I have to say, I was very impressed with what I found in the manual. Foxconn has done an outstanding job with the manual for the 915A03-P-8EKRS, as it offers a wide variety of information, not only on the BIOS, but on system setup, as well as background information on each of the connections that are available on the board itself. The only area where some additional material could ve been added was the install guide. I d like to see more than just a simple install CPU, install RAM section. As far as hardware related inclusions go, the 915A03-P-8EKRS comes along with a fairly minimal product package, though it is better than other i915x motherboards we ve dealt with up to this point. We ve got two Serial ATA data cables, as well as a single Molex power adapter for two Serial ATA devices. There is a single IDE cable for use with the ICH6 s native IDE support, and an additional floppy cable for archaic but still somewhat useful floppy drives. We also have the usual rear I/O panel, as well as an additional expansion bracket featuring two additional USB 2.0 capable ports. Foxconn has also included a rear bracket featuring a S/PDIF RCA connection for use with the HD Audio implementation on the 915A03-P-8EKRS. Overall, the 915A03-P-8EKRS s package is a little better than what we have seen so far from some of the other i915x offerings, but it also comes only with what I would qualify as the bare minimum. From a hardware item standpoint, we were pleased to find all of the required items, and were also happy to see that Foxconn didn t skimp out of SATA data or power cabling, though with no added IEEE1394 bracket, it left the package feeling a bit dry considering the board supports IEEE1394 devices. The documentation that Foxconn has included is superb. Foxconn has managed to provide a well rounded and detailed look at the capabilities and layout of the 915A03-P-8EKRS, along with a good guide covering software installation...:: 915A03-P-8EKRS Layout: Socket Area ::.. 4 / 12

Now that we ve had a chance to examine the product package, it s time we took a good look at the board design and layout scheme. As far as an initial overview of the motherboard goes, I must say that I like that overall look of the 915A03-P-8EKRS in that it comes with a vibrant blue PCB, along with yellow PCI-E x1 slots, and blue / gold DIMM slots as well. Normally we only seen blue PCB s heading out of the Gigabyte or Albatron factories, so it s nice to see another manufacturer using a blue PCB. Of course, I m slightly partisan when it comes to anything in both blue and gold, but that s a whole other story, heh. Well, let s examine the 915A03-P-8EKRS on a more minute level to see what we find. The Socket T is oriented lengthwise from East to West across the motherboard. Due to the much improved mounting mechanics for the new LGA 775 processors, Intel has done away with the large retention bracket that was needed on the older Socket 478 implementations. The new mounting method simply requires pushing some pins through the four mounting holes, and you re done. Around the Socket T, we find that Foxconn, as with several other manufacturers, has put to use the low profile component zones for the core voltage power supply. Foxconn has implemented a three-phase design for the 915A03-P-8EKRS, as can be seen with the three side-mounted inductors, complete with their own encasings. There are silk screen markings on the PCB surface that would allow for a four-phase power supply to be implemented as well. This is the second three-phase power solution that we have seen so far for any of the LGA775 motherboards, so we ll see if this board runs smoothly as did the Albatron motherboard which also only had a three-phase design The components that make up the processor portion of the 915A03-P-8EKRS deal with the core voltage supply. Along the right hand side of the processor socket, we find the main voltage regulation chip, along with the ITE Jumper Free clock controller. This area also houses the four-pin power connection for the CPU fan. These new four-pin power headers are likely to be found more on the Foxconn motherboards than they are on some of the other more mainstream enthusiast options on the market. Foxconn has also shifted the secondary core voltage connection further down the board, towards the bottom end of the series of capacitors, MOSFET s and inductors. This was the typical location on i875p / i865pe motherboards, and we ve seen this used twice now on LGA775 motherboards. Other than these core electrical components, the processor portion of the 915A03-P-8EKRS is nice and clean. Foxconn has implemented their three-phase power solution for the 915A03-P-8EKRS with high quality, ultra-low ESR capacitors, as well as high quality control components. As we mentioned earlier, there is also room for a four-phase design to be built into this board, though these seems to be found more often on the i915g and i925x motherboards. The reason we ve seen shifts to four-phase solutions is due to the power draw from these new 5 / 12

processors. By increasing the number of phases, the processor can obtain a cleaner and steadier voltage, providing for solid power delivery. Hence, it makes more sense for these four-phase designs to work with the more power intensive i915g and i925x boards...:: 915A03-P-8EKRS Layout: Northbridge Area ::.. As far as Northbridge cooling goes, Foxconn has implemented a large, aluminum heatsink that has been anodized green. In our review of Albatron s i915g motherboard, we found that passive cooling solutions weren t the best option for cooling out there, especially when the systems were placed under heavy load. We found temperatures exceeding 60C on the Northbridge when it was under full load. The heatsink on the 915A03-P-8EKRS fared a little better, but in the core area of the heatsink, we still found temperatures above 50C. An active cooling solution would ve been a much better option on these Northbridge chips. This heating problem will certainly affect overclocking capabilities no doubt; we saw this same problem with the Albatron board at default voltages, and we ll likely see this happen again with the 915A03-P-8EKRS. The area to the left of the i915p Northbridge chip is quite clean featuring no more than a few capacitors, an IDT clock generator chip, and the secondary, 12V core voltage power connector. Normally, this are houses items ranging from audio controllers to LAN controllers, but this is not the case with the 915A03-P-8EKRS. I was quite surprised to find this are as clean and clear of any major components as I did. Clearly, the main items of importance with the Northbridge area is the heatsink itself, and whether or not it will end up being up to the challenge when it comes to keeping things running stably when we kick this board into gar and do some overclocking. 6 / 12

..:: 915A03-P-8EKRS Layout: Expansion Area ::.. The expansion slot portion of the 915A03-P-8EKRS features a single x16 PCI-Express slot, along with three x1 PCI-Express slots. At the bottom of the board, we also find three regular PCI slots. This is generally the typical setup found on most of these i925x and i915p motherboards, although some manufacturers only allow for two x1 connections as one lane is used for a Gigabit Ethernet controller. Due to the lack of PCI-Express products out there at this time that use the x1 connection, or any other besides x16, we ll see mostly x1 and x16 connections for some time. The majority of the components in this area of the PCB are, as always, located along the rear edge of the motherboard. At the top of this section, right under the rear I/O panel we first find the main component dealing with the 915A03-P-8EKRS s onboard LAN support, the Realtek RTL8110S Gigabit Ethernet controller. Much like what we have seen with other manufacturers, this is a regular PCI implementation. I would like to see Foxconn add a Gigabit controller that uses the PCI-E lane, rather than older, and slower PCI. Some manufacturers have been able to get around this issue by providing one connection for each. Below the Gigabit Ethernet controller, we find the High Definition Audio CODEC that Foxconn has chosen to power the 915A03-P-8EKRS, the Realtek ALC880. The ALC880 offers full 7.1 channel audio support, features two 24-bit DACs and three 20-bit stereo ADCs for high quality, high resolution audio, and also features 32-bit, 96kHz support for both input and output S/PDIF connections. If we take a quick look above the CODEC chip, we see that Foxconn has added in a single four-pin audio connection, while there is only silk screening and solder points that would allow for a second auxiliary connection as well. The next set of important items can be found along the bottom edge of the motherboard, underneath the last PCI slot. Here, we find the bright read front panel audio header, which is located in an excellent position to allow for proper and clean cable routing throughout the case should the user want to utilize any of their front panel ports. This area also houses the system 7 / 12

buzzer, along with the Wake-On-LAN connector, as well as the S/PDIF connection for the included expansion bracket. Lastly, we re going to take a look at the components located in the open area to the right of the x1 PCI-Express connections as this area is what we would still classify as the expansion slot portion of the motherboard. This are houses the required components for the 915A03-P-8EKRS s IEEE1394 support, those being the VIA controller chip, as well as the bright orange header to allow for connection to a rear expansion bracket. This is an interesting add-on, but considering there was no expansion bracket for support of this feature in the product package, it is a bit useless unless the user goes out and purchases their own expansion bracket...:: 915A03-P-8EKRS Layout: Southbridge & Memory Area ::. The Southbridge portion of the 915A03-P-8EKRS is quite clean, and well organized. As the 915A03-P-8EKRS does not come with as many additional items as did some of the other motherboards we ve reviewed as of late, this helps to further clean things up a bit. Starting off near the three PCI slots, we see that there are solder points and silk screening on the PCB surface outlining an additional two Serial ATA connections, as well as a Serial ATA RAID controller. This controller is provided by Silicon Image, though it has not been added on to our review motherboard. If this option was included, it would bring the total Serial ATA device support up to six. The main components of interest on the 915A03-P-8EKRS are all located around the Southbridge chip itself, as we have repeatedly seen with these i925/i915 motherboards. If we take a look towards the lower right corner of the IOCH6-R, we find the System BIOS, as well as the Clear CMOS header. Above these items we find all four of the native Serial ATA ports 8 / 12

supported by the ICH6-R, as well as the system battery, all of which have been lined up in a neat row. On the left side of the ICH6-R, we find both of the blue USB2.0 headers that can be utilized with the included rear expansion bracket. One unique fact about the 915A03-P-8EKRS in comparison to the other motherboards we ve reviewed so far with an ICH6-x Southbridge chip is that Foxconn has not chosen to include any form of passive cooling. On each and every board we ve seen to date based off of the i925/i915 series of chipsets, the Southbridge has been fitted with a passive cooler, which in most cases did manage to remove a lot of heat from the Southbridge. Throughout our testing, we found that the Southbridge chip would indeed become quite warm, and we feel that it would be beneficial to add on at least some form of passive cooling. As we move up towards the DIMM portion of the motherboard, we find the typical connections for Floppy and DIE devices, as well as an additional four-pin fan power connector. This connection could be utilized with a front case fan to allow for cool air intake. One thing we noticed was that there was no header for a rear exhaust fan, something of note that we would have liked to have seen added. The DIMM slots themselves are blue and yellow, a beautiful mix of colors if I do say so myself. There is one problem with the DIMM slots though, that being the fact that you cannot add or remove RAM should you have a larger PCI-E graphics adapter in place. Along the right side of the DIMM slots, we find the new 24-pin ATX connection. These PSU s are still quite difficult / expensive to come by at this point, but the 915A03-P-8EKRS is backwards compatible with the PSU you re using today so you ll have no problems with the switch. This is the case for all motherboards based off of these new chipsets. All that need to be done is mount the 12V ATX connector so four pins are left unconnected. We ve seen some manufacturers like Gigabyte cover up these four pins with a sticker, though most manufacturers simply have left instruction in the manual and otherwise ignored the switch. Overall, the Foxconn 915A03-P-8EKRS features a pretty solid design, though there were a few things we felt were missing, and one major problem that is pretty routine on many motherboards. First off, Foxconn only provided two four-pin fan power connections. There should be at least three of these connections available, especially for a rear exhaust fan given the heat situation with the current line of Pentium 4 s. Another problem that came about was the fact that the DIMM slot clips overlap the area of the board that would be used should the end user purchase a higher-end graphics adapter. This was a common problem on older motherboards, and obviously it still exists. This is a hard problem to avoid though in the case of the 915A03-P-8EKRS as it features seven slots, typically the amount of slots where the DIMM 9 / 12

overlap becomes problematic. Other than these points, Foxconn has done a solid job with the design and looks of the 915A03-P-8EKRS...:: 915A03-P-8EKRS System BIOS ::.. For the 915A03-P-8EKRS s BIOS, Foxconn has opted to go with the usual setup that we have seen countless times prior. When you enter the BIOS, you ll come across all of those usual options such as Standard CMOS Features, Advanced BIOS Features, Advanced Chipset Features, Integrated Peripherals, Power Management Setup, PnP/PCI Configurations, PC Health Status, Frequency / Voltage Control, and all of the Default Settings, etc. Foxconn also has one additional menu that houses the enabling / disabling options for their own technologies, more on this in a minute. We ll be primarily interested today in the BIOS Features, Advanced Chipset Features, Integrated Peripherals, PC Health Status, and of course the Frequency / Voltage Control. The first menu that we ll be diving into is labeled as BIOS Features. This menu houses four of the features / technologies that Foxconn has implemented into their 915A03-P-8EKRS. When the user enters into this menu, they find a simple listing of the four technologies, along with the settings available for each. First off, we have SuperBoot. All this feature does is store boot data in the CMOS so that when the system is booted up again later, the boot process takes less time and yields a faster start up. This isn t much of a special feature as this is common on nearly all motherboards. Next up, we have the SuperBIOS-Protect option, which seems to be a glorified capability to prevent a virus from corrupting the system BIOS, again a fairly standard feature on most modern motherboards. SuperRecovery is meant for data protection should something happen with the HDD. Lastly, we have SuperSpeed, the most useful of these items. SuperSpeed actually features a submenu that allows for control over such items as the multiplier, memory frequency, FSB, and a voltage adjustment option for the VCore. 10 / 12

The Advanced Chipset Features submenu houses all of the oh-so-important memory timing options. While Foxconn allows for the standard memory timings to be manually adjusted, there are no other tweaking options available that would make the 915A03-P-8EKRS a standout for tweaking options. Foxconn offers the standard CAS, RAS to CAS, RAS to Precharge, and Precharge timing selections. Some of the more other settings that can be adjusted within this window are whether or not to enabled caching of the System and Video BIOS, as well as the Memory Hole and PCI Express Root Function. Much like what we have seen in our years of reviewing motherboards, the Integrated Peripherals window is also broken up into an immense listing of certain specific aspects of the motherboard and the peripherals that are built-in. Within this menu, the user has the ability to configure the IRQ settings of several of the integrated peripherals, along with enabling or disabling the ones that they wish to use or not to use for that matter. Within this menu, we can enable or disable several items such as USB 2.0, HD Audio, Integrated LAN, Serial Ports, Parallel Port, and much more. If you know that you re going to be utilizing any of the given features offered by the 915A03-P-8EKRS, this is the portion of the BIOS where you ll need to look to make sure each of them has been enabled. The next menu that we will be discussing is that of the PC Health Status menu. The menu houses all of the various displays for system temperatures, RPM readings, and voltage readings. As you can see, our 3.60GHz Prescott processor is running with the proper VCore at roughly 1.25V, much better than the 1.40V+ we have been receiving on some other motherboards in house. This is still within the operating voltage, and the loss of a little voltage across the core will aid in cooling by quite a bit. Foxconn also adds an option to select a shutdown temperature for the system, as well as a warning temperature where the system will begin to produce intermittent beeps. These are options you ll definitely want to enable should you be operating off a high-end Prescott core processor. 11 / 12
