Jane Wright Technology Overview 10 January 2003 Historical Rack-Dense IA-32-Based Servers: Perspective Summary We investigate general-purpose servers from Dell, Fujitsu, HP and IBM that support one or two IA-32 (32- bit Intel) processors in a 1U or 2U chassis. Commentary 11 March HP announced the ProLiant DL560 which supports up to four Xeon 2.0GHz processors in a 2U-rack space. Memory ranges from 1GB to 12GB, and internal storage capacity is 287GB. Prices start at US$7,000 for a uniprocessor configuration. - Jane Wright Table of Contents Technology Basics Technology Analysis Business Use Selection Guidelines Technology Leaders Technology Alternatives Insight List Of Tables Table 1: Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Uniprocessor Intel-Based Servers Table 2: Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Dual-Processor Pentium III-Based Servers Table 3: Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Dual-Processor Pentium III-Based Servers (Continued) Table 4: Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Dual-Processor Xeon-Based Servers Table 5: Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Dual-Processor Xeon-Based Servers (Continued) Gartner Reproduction of this publication in any form without prior written permission is forbidden. 2 Technology Basics The space that a server occupies in a rack is measured in terms of U. A U is 1.75 inches in height. The most common dimensions of an industry- rack are 42U high (about 6 feet) and 19 inches wide. So, for example, if a customer chooses servers that measure 2U each, that customer could, theoretically, install as many as 21 servers in one rack. Of course, in most cases the customer will be installing external storage devices and other components in the same rack, which will leave less space for the servers themselves. Also, power constraints may limit the total number of servers that can be housed in the rack. Given all that, however, an enterprise requiring rack-dense, Intel-based 32-bit servers today can expect to be able to install about 12 to 20 such servers in an industry- rack. How small must a server be to be labeled rack-dense? There is no concrete definition. For example, a 7U server that supports two processors and is designed for a workgroup would be considered large, but a 7U server that supports eight processors and is designed to be an enterprise application server would be considered rack-dense for its class. In this report, we will look at very slim, rack-dense servers those that measure 2U or less supporting up to two processors. These will usually be employed as workgroup or departmental application servers within enterprises. Internet service providers (ISPs) or application service providers (ASPs) may also deploy them. Technology Analysis When a PC server vendor sets out to design a rack-dense server, it faces a trade-off decision between specifications and size. The earliest rack-dense servers suffered from this trade-off, sporting little memory capacity or few high-availability features, for example. Today, many server manufacturers have accomplished slim formats with a reasonable set of specifications, so that now 1U or 2U servers often meet Gartner s minimal definition for a workgroup-level Intel-based server. The primary reason for installing servers in a rack is to save floor space, which is a constrained resource for many customers. Other reasons for installing servers in a rack include enabling the IT staff to maintain better control over the servers and setting up a more logical assembly of servers and external storage units, especially when they will be clustered together for high availability or load balancing. For these reasons, there has been a growing demand for small servers that can be easily mounted in a rack. IA-32 server vendors have responded to this trend by offering more rack-mountable products and, gradually, ever-smaller formats. Because so many of these smaller servers can be installed in a rack, they are referred to as rack-dense. They are also often referred to as rack-optimized servers, meaning that these servers were designed especially for their future rack home, rather than being designed in a tower format. Business Use There are essentially three types of users of rack-dense PC servers: ISPs, ASPs and enterprise service providers (ESPs). ISPs were the first to drive the demand for rack-dense Intel-based servers. Often their rate of growth cannot be accurately predicted, so ISPs need to be capable of adding servers quickly, as needed. This means they need to be capable of adding lots of servers within the confines of their current office space. Their applications will include Internet access, firewall, proxy server and Web-page caching. 10 January
ASPs share applications among many customers. Like ISPs, their growth may be unpredictable, so ASPs also need to be capable of adding servers quickly within their current space. In addition, ASPs may require more high-availability features in their servers. Their applications may include small database applications and vertical applications. ESP is another term for the IT staff within the enterprise that provides application support to departments or workgroups within the enterprise. The applications may include and messaging, intranet applications and business-critical applications specific to the enterprise. Selection Guidelines When selecting a rack-dense IA-32 server, the first metric to consider is, of course, size. Customers with space constraints must look for the slimmest possible server that supports all of their required features. The next factors to consider are the number of processors supported and the clock speed of those processors. Regarding storage, customers must consider how many internal disk drives are needed. Are there plans to stripe the boot disk and store other data internally? How big (in terms of U) is the vendor s external storage subsystem, and how much external storage can each subsystem support? Each customer will need to look for the best combination of processors, internal disks and external storage that can fit in each rack to suit their individual requirements. The customer should have the vendor demonstrate installing the server in the rack and removing it from the rack. The server should be easy to install or replace and easy to open for service while still in the rack. If the server will be ordered pre-installed in a rack, the rack must be an industry- size that will fit through the door of the computer room. Since most customers will purchase rack-dense IA-32 servers in volumes, it is important to ask the vendor for specific details on cooling requirements within the rack. For example, if the company expects to upgrade the memory on the servers in the future, the total collection of processors and memory cannot be so large that they would overheat within the rack. Sometimes the maximum specifications provided by vendors regarding their servers are more theoretical than practical. For example, some vendors installation guides warn customers that if they want to install the maximum configuration of servers, they will need to keep the rack door open at all times to let out some of the heat, or they must use a rack with a perforated door. Finally, customers will want to investigate the high-availability features and bundled management software that comes with the server they consider purchasing. These details are provided in the tables Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Uniprocessor Intel-Based Server, Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Dual-Processor Pentium-Based Servers and Competitive Comparison: Rack-Dense Dual- Processor Xeon DP-Based Servers. in the Technology Leaders section of this report. Technology Leaders Each major vendor of rack-dense, Intel-based servers offers at least three server products that measure 2U or less. Most of these vendors begin by offering a 1U/1P (one processor in a 1U chassis) server, and these are usually basic products with limited expandability and few, if any, high-availability features. Each vendor also offers one or more two-way servers, and these can range in size from 1U to 2U. Dell 1U/1P server: PowerEdge 350 supports Celeron and Pentium III processors, a 100MHz front-side bus, 1GB of memory and internal Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) storage up to 240GB. Note that 10 January
the Pentium III-based server does not support the 133MHz front-side bus available on its direct competitors. Dual-processor Pentium-based server: PowerEdge 1650 (1U) supports Pentium III processors up to 1,400MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 4GB memory and internal storage up to 219GB. Dual-processor Xeon DP-based server: PowerEdge 2650 (2U) supports processors up to 2,800MHz, a 400MHz front-side bus, 6GB of 200MHz double data rate (DDR) synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) and internal storage up to 365MB. Many customers appreciate Dell s configure-to-order policy, which enables customers to detail exactly which specifications they want on their servers, and Dell will build them to order before shipping. Dell offers a rack-mountable 1U switch box that can reduce the cabling required for a large number of servers in the rack. With this switch, only one keyboard, monitor and mouse is required for every eight servers. Dell also offers a cable management system that holds all of the cables in one enclosure. Fujitsu Siemens Fujitsu has a significant share of the European server market; however, its U.S. market share is more modest. The vendor has no direct sales or support personnel in the United States, so products and support are obtained through affiliate companies: 1U/1P server: Primergy L100 supports Celeron processors up to 1,300MHz (100MHz front-side bus) and Pentium III processors up to 1,400MHz (133MHz front-side bus), 1.5GB memory and ATA internal storage up to 160GB. Dual-processor Pentium-based servers: Primergy L200 (1U) supports Pentium III processors up to 1,400MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 4GB memory and internal storage up to 219GB. Primergy P200 (2U) supports Pentium III processors up to 1,400MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 4GB memory and internal storage up to 438GB. Dual-processor Xeon DP-based server: Primergy P250 (2U) supports processors up to 2,600MHz, a 400MHz front-side bus, 12GB of 200MHz DDR SDRAM and internal storage up to 438GB. The Primergy L100, L200 and P200 systems are currently offered in both the European and U.S. markets. The P250 is not available in the United States. Hewlett-Packard One of the outcomes of the Hewlett-Packard/Compaq merger is that Compaq s ProLiant product line now carries the Hewlett-Packard name: 1U/1P servers: 10 January
ProLiant DL320 supports Pentium III processors up to 1,266MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 2GB of memory and internal storage up to 160GB (ATA models) or 72GB (Small Computer Systems Interface [SCSI] models). ProLiant DL320/G2 supports Pentium 4 processors up to 2,260MHz, a 533MHz front-side bus, 4GB of memory and internal storage of up to 160GB (ATA models) or 72GB (SCSI models). These servers can be housed in a variety of rack types. Rack-planning tools, designed to assist customers in selecting and configuring their racks, are available. Dual-processor Pentium-based server: ProLiant DL360 (1U) supports Pentium III processors up to 1,266MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 4GB of memory and internal storage of up to 146GB. ProLiant DL360/G2 (1U) supports Pentium III processors up to 1,400MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 4GB of memory and internal storage of up to 293GB. ProLiant DL380/G2 (2U) supports Pentium III processors up to 1,400MHz, a 133MHz front-side bus, 6GB of memory and internal storage of up to 880GB. Dual-processor Xeon DP-based servers: ProLiant DL360/G3 (1U) supports processors up to 2,800MHz, a 533MHz front-side bus, 4GB of memory and internal storage of up to 292GB. ProLiant DL380/G3 (2U) supports processors up to 2,800MHz, a 400MHz front-side bus, 6GB of memory and internal storage of up to 880GB. Recognizing that having lots of servers in a rack can be a cabling nightmare, HP offers a Compaqdesigned cable management solution. Instead of having a separate keyboard, mouse and video cable coming out the back of the rack for each server, the Lights-Out Connector is offered for about $499 per server. This works with the Remote Lights-Out Edition software and allows the administrator to use one keyboard, mouse and video for all of the servers in the rack. This cable management solution will be especially important to customers installing a large number of servers in each rack, but will also add to the cost of each server. A pulley system that keeps the servers in place if one server is pulled from the rack is also offered. This ensures that the cabling for each server does not collapse onto the server below. IBM 1U/1P server: xseries 305 supports Pentium 4 processors up to 2,670MHz, a 400MHz or 533MHz front-side bus (processor dependent), 4GB of memory and internal storage up to 160GB (ATA models) or 146GB (SCSI models). The dual-channel ATA controller is integrated. The single-channel Ultra160 SCSI controller occupies a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slot. Dual-processor Xeon DP-based servers: xseries 335 (1U) supports processors up to 2,800MHz, a 400MHz front-side bus, 4GB memory and internal storage up to 292GB. xseries 345 (2U) supports processors up to 2,400MHz, a 400MHz front-side bus, 4GB memory and internal storage up to 880GB. 10 January
When problems occur, each IBM server has an LED display system called Light Path Diagnostics to direct the administrator to the exact problem point. The rack-dense xseries servers are supported by IBM s Cable Chaining Technology (CCT), which reduces the web of cables that could plague a heavily populated rack. IBM has integrated a switch into each server, replacing the keyboard, video and mouse cables. Each switch accepts up to eight servers. These switches are integrated at no additional charge, although there would be a fee of about $500 for the power distribution unit for each switch (that is, every eight servers). No software products are required for CCT. Moreover, customers do not have to be using IBM s IBM Director server management software with CCT, which means that customers who have opted for a third-party server management product can still take advantage of CCT. 17 The newest alternative to a rack-dense server with one or two processors is the blade server. A blade server is a stand-alone server usually consisting of one or two processors, memory and a hard disk or two, all on a small circuit board. While rack-dense servers are installed directly into the rack, groups of blade servers are installed into a chassis, and the chassis is installed into the rack. A typical blade server format might support six to 24 servers in a chassis that measures between 3U and 6U. Each rack-dense server has its own power cable, fan(s) and I/O controllers. Blade servers, on the other hand, share power, cooling and I/O with the other blades in the chassis. The advantages of blade servers over rack-dense servers are: Smaller size allows more server in the rack space. Fewer cables are required, as all of the blade servers in the chassis share the power distribution unit, cooling fans, keyboard, video and mouse. Blade servers are easier to install and remove. Once the chassis itself is installed in the rack, it is a relatively simple task to insert a blade server into the chassis, where it is automatically connected to the infrastructure of the chassis. The disadvantages of blade servers compared to rack-dense servers are: Standards for management and I/O connectivity have not yet emerged for the blade server market. Customers who purchase blade servers today may find themselves with non equipment in a few years. Rack-dense server technology is more mature, with a well-established set of s. At this time, bundled server management products are not able to monitor the chassis and blade servers of other vendors. Customers must purchase all of their server blades from the same vendor or else use multiple management tools. Conversely, server management software from many server vendors and independent software vendors is able to monitor rack-dense servers from a variety of vendors. The price advantages of blade servers compared to rack-dense servers are not yet clear. While the blade servers themselves may or may not be more expensive than a similar rack-dense server, depending on the vendor, the overall cost of ownership advantage touted by server blade vendors has yet to be proven. The space and power savings afforded by blade servers will, of course, be significant to customers in locations where real estate and power are very expensive. But the cost of the chassis must also be included in any cost comparison. And since s for the blade server market have not yet been established, blade server customers may find themselves locked into their current vendor, which precludes their ability to shop around for a lower price when more blade servers are needed. Midsize Server A midsize workgroup Intel-based server may be a good alternative to a rack-dense workgroup PC server for customers who are not space-constrained. Generally, rack-dense servers are more expensive than similarly configured midsize servers. If space is not the first or second criterion in the server purchasing decision, a midsize server may provide the same features at a lower price. Floor-standing Server Floor-standing servers that can be converted to rack-mount are generally not an ideal solution. While true rack-dense servers are designed to be optimized in a rack, convertible formats may be less efficient in a rack. For example, it may be difficult to open and service the convertible server once it is housed in a rack. Customers should buy a floor-standing model if they are fairly certain they will stay with the floorstanding format for the life of the server. 10 January
Insight Whether the customer is an ISP, ASP or an enterprise that needs to install workgroup or departmental application servers in a small space, Intel-based server vendors are addressing customers needs for processors and storage in a slim format. There are a wide variety of rack-dense, general-purpose PC servers available today from major vendors, with formats of 2U or less. Many of the server vendors have focused their efforts on improving the way these servers are cabled in a rack. Some have integrated their cable management products directly into their servers, while other cable management systems require options that add to the cost of the server. Blade servers are a likely alternative to rack-dense servers. The advantages of blade servers compared to rack-dense servers relate to space and ease of installation. But until a set of s is established for the blade server market, rack-dense servers remain a good choice for customers who require slim servers for their front-end or workgroup applications. 10 January
