Misson icer is MSU s central research computing facility. The unit provides high performance computing platforms, outstanding user support and consultation with staff experienced in scientific computing.

Why Use HPC? Need CPU Cycles Big Data (hundreds of gigabytes) Large Memory (64gb - 6 TB) Data Sharing No DIY Specialized Software (Linux environment)

Components of HPCC a cluster of homogenous computers + high speed networking + shared file systems + infrastructure + people

HPC vs PC Each computing node in a cluster is a single computer Feature Your Computer 2014 Cluster Processors (sockets) 1 2 per node Cores or more per node, thousands per cluster Speed ghz ghz Connection to other computers Campus ethernet 1,000 MBit/sec "Infiniband" 50,000 MBit/sec Computers (nodes) 1 => 8 cores total 223 => 4,460 cores total Users 1 ~1,200 High Performance => Running work in parallel, for long periods of time Schedule On Demand 24/7, Queue

Facilities Compute Resources 17,500 cores 596 compute nodes 110 TB of memory Storage Resources 2.3 PB permanent 15 TB small I/O scratch 1.9 PB temporary scratch 300 accelerators (GPU & Phi) High-speed InfiniBand network

Intel GHz Intel Xeon E5-2670v2 Nodes Cores/Node Memory/Node Accelerators/Node GB CPU: 128 GB Phi: 16 GB CPU: 128 GB GPU: 10 GB 6* 48/96 1 TB -6 TB 2x Xeon Phi 5110P (MIC) 2 x NVIDIA K20c

Intel GHz Intel Xeon E5-2680v4 Nodes Cores/Node Memory/Node Accelerators/Node GB CPU: 256 GB GPU: 256 GB 4 x NVIDIA K80 3* TB

Storage Facilities Home/Research Long term, replicated Store scripts and results here Small I/O Scratch 50GB per user 100 GB per user Home (/mnt/home) Small I/O Scratch (/mnt/ffs17) Perform heavy read/write on lots Scratch of small files here; Not backed up Temporary, high speed storage Perform I/O on very large files or data here. Up to 1TB per group Larger quotas available for purchase Up to 50 TB per user (up to a million files) Research (/mnt/research) Scratch (/mnt/scratch)

Data Transfer ssh utilities: scp, sftp GUI Applications: Filezilla, Cyberduck Map HPC Drives Globus

Software Open Source Titles (>800) Optimized math and communication libraries Commercial Software (ANSYS, MATLAB, Stata, and SAS) Install your own software! We can help.
