1 31 August 2006 Trimble Recon Handheld: Using the Socket Bluetooth CompactFlash Card This document explains how to use the Socket Bluetooth CompactFlash card on the Trimble Recon handheld running the Microsoft Windows Mobile version 5.0 software. Note: You will only need a Socket Bluetooth CompactFlash card if your Trimble Recon handheld does not have Bluetooth wireless technology built in or if you need more than two Bluetooth COM ports. The Socket Bluetooth CompactFlash card fits into one of the CompactFlash slots on the Trimble Recon handheld. 2 System requirements To use the Socket Bluetooth card on a Trimble Recon handheld with Windows Mobile 5.0 software installed you need: Version H, K, L or later of the Socket Bluetooth card. Earlier versions may work, but have not been tested with the Trimble Recon handheld. The Bluetooth driver for the Socket Bluetooth card. To download the driver installation file, go to and select the driver that supports Windows Mobile 5.0 software. A desktop computer with version 4.2 or later of the Microsoft ActiveSync technology installed. At least one Bluetooth-enabled device that supports discovery (for example, a GPS receiver, a Beacon receiver, desktop computer, or mobile phone with a Bluetooth module). Installing the Bluetooth driver Warning: Do not insert the Socket Bluetooth card until you have installed the driver and reset the handheld as this may cause the driver installation to fail. 1. Connect the Trimble Recon handheld to the desktop computer using ActiveSync technology. 2. If necessary, download the Socket Bluetooth card driver from 3. On the desktop computer, double-click the downloaded file to start the installation. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen. Inserting the Socket Bluetooth card 1. Unscrew the two screws on top of the CF-Cap slot protector, and then slide the CF-Cap slot protector off the handheld. 2. Insert the Socket Bluetooth card into one of the CompactFlash slots. 3. Push gently until the card is firmly seated in the slot. 4. Slide the CF-Cap slot protector back onto the handheld and tighten the screws. Warning: If the CF Cap slot protector is not attached to the handheld, the Trimble Recon handheld is no longer sealed, and it is prone to damage from grit or water. The warranty for the Trimble Recon handheld does not cover water damage that occurs when the CF Cap slot protector is not attached, or is not attached correctly. 5. Do the following: a. If the Modem Detected dialog appears, tap Dismiss. b. If the Disable Bluetooth services you do not require message appears, disable all services that you do not require. Make sure that the Bluetooth COM ports are enabled. Page 2

3 Using Bluetooth wireless technology When you install the Socket Bluetooth driver, the Bluetooth initialization wizard runs automatically. The wizard guides you through the steps required to enable the Bluetooth radio. The wizard asks you to supply a name for your Trimble Recon handheld. Other Bluetooth devices will use this Bluetooth name to identify your Trimble Recon handheld. Tip: Use the device name of the Trimble Recon handheld as its Bluetooth name. To view or change the device name, select Start / Settings / System, and then tap the Device Name tab. When you have completed the wizard, the Bluetooth icon appears at the bottom of the Today screen. To begin using Bluetooth, tap the Bluetooth icon. The following options are available: Option Turn Transmitter OFF Turn Transmitter ON Get Connected Advanced Features / My Bluetooth Device Advanced Features / Bluetooth Devices Bluetooth ActiveSync Bluetooth LAN Access About Description Turns off the Bluetooth radio. Use this option if you want to turn off or disable the Bluetooth radio without removing the Bluetooth card from the handheld. When the Bluetooth radio is turned off, the Bluetooth icon in the command bar is gray. Turns on the Bluetooth radio. If the Bluetooth radio is turned off, most of the other options are unavailable. Select this option to turn on the Bluetooth radio. The Bluetooth icon changes to blue, and the handheld is ready to connect to other devices. Runs the Get Connected wizard, which guides you through the process of setting up a Bluetooth mobile phone as a modem for use with the Trimble Recon handheld. Opens the Device Manager dialog, where you can configure the Trimble Recon handheld s Bluetooth settings, and enable or disable its Bluetooth ports. Opens the Bluetooth Devices folder, where you can view the Bluetooth neighborhood, connect to other Bluetooth devices, and manage your Bluetooth connections. See also Connecting to other Bluetooth devices. Establishes an ActiveSync connection to a desktop computer. For more information, see Connecting to ActiveSync technology. Connects to a Bluetooth LAN access point. A LAN access point forms a bridge between the Trimble Recon handheld and the local area network (LAN) in your building. LAN access allows you to transfer data, access the Internet, and send and receive e mail. Once you have established a Bluetooth connection to the access point, you can move freely within range of the access point Displays information about the Socket Bluetooth card and driver. Page 3

4 Configuring the Trimble Recon handheld as a Bluetooth device To configure the Trimble Recon handheld as a Bluetooth device, tap the Bluetooth icon in the command bar, and then tap Advanced Features / My Bluetooth Device. The Device Manager dialog appears. Use this dialog to: view or edit the handheld s Bluetooth name control whether other devices can use Bluetooth services offered by the handheld configure Bluetooth services on the handheld General tab The General tab contains the following fields: Field Friendly Name Bluetooth Address Discoverable Connectable Description The Bluetooth name that you have assigned to the Trimble Recon handheld. This is usually its device name. A numeric identifier for the Trimble Recon handheld. This is the address that identifies the handheld uniquely to other Bluetooth devices. Select this check box to make the Trimble Recon handheld a discoverable device. When a Bluetooth device is discoverable, it can be detected by other Bluetooth devices when they scan the neighborhood. A device only needs to be discoverable if it offers Bluetooth services to other devices. Normally, the Trimble Recon handheld does not need to be discoverable, because it only uses Bluetooth services offered by other devices. Making the handheld discoverable makes it less secure and uses more power. If you do not want other Bluetooth devices to connect to the Trimble Recon handheld, clear this check box. Select this check box to allow other devices to connect to the Trimble Recon handheld. Like the Discoverable check box, this check box should only be selected if you want other Bluetooth devices to connect to the Trimble Recon handheld. Page 4

5 Field Use Authentication Description Select this check box to require other devices to authenticate themselves when connecting to the Trimble Recon handheld. Clear this check box if your device does not support authentication. If you do not do this, you will not be able to connect to the Trimble Recon handheld. Note: Currently authentication is not required when connecting to any Trimble Bluetooth enabled receiver. Use Encryption Select this check box to encrypt any data transmitted by the Trimble Recon handheld over Bluetooth connections. This check box is only available if the Use Authentication check box is selected. COM Ports tab The COM Ports tab shows the handheld s Bluetooth port configuration. The Bluetooth card sets up virtual COM ports, and assigns each Bluetooth service one of these COM ports for communicating with various types of devices. This tab contains a check box for each Bluetooth service on the Trimble Recon handheld. For each service, its name and the assigned COM port are shown. To enable a service, select the check box beside its name. The first available COM port is assigned to the service. To disable a service, clear its check box. Tip: Turn off any Bluetooth service that you do not intend to use. Connecting to other Bluetooth devices To establish and manage connections to other Bluetooth devices in the vicinity, tap the Bluetooth icon in the command bar, and from the menu that appears select Advanced Features / Bluetooth Devices. The Bluetooth Devices folder appears. This folder shows all of the discoverable Bluetooth devices that are in your Bluetooth neighborhood. If the Bluetooth Devices folder is empty, or does not include a device that you expected to find, you need to scan the neighborhood to discover any devices. Page 5

6 Discovering devices To discover other Bluetooth devices that are in range, open the Bluetooth Devices folder and then either tap the Device Discovery icon, or select Tools / Device Discovery. The Bluetooth Device Discovery wizard runs. Follow the instructions on the screen to specify the types of devices to scan for, scan for discoverable devices within range, and select the discovered devices that you want to connect to. When the wizard finishes, you are returned to the Bluetooth Devices folder. The devices that you selected appear as icons in the folder. Page 6

7 Bonding When two Bluetooth devices bond (or pair), they exchange authentication information so that they can connect automatically and secureely in future. To bond with a discovered device, either highlight the device and then select Device / Bond, or tap and hold the device and from the menu that appears select Bond. The Bluetooth Device Bonding wizard runs. Follow the instructions on the screen to bond with the selected device. If either device is configured to require authentication, you must select a PIN (or passkey) and enter this PIN both on the Trimble Recon handheld and on the other device. Favorites If you frequently connect to the same service on a particular Bluetooth device, you can set this device up as a favorite. If the favorite device is within range and discoverable, and Bluetooth is enabled on both the device and the Trimble Recon handheld, the two devices automatically connect. If you do not set up a device as a favorite, you must select the device every time you want to use it. To set up a device as a favorite, select Advanced Features/Bluetooth Devices/Tools /My Favorites. Select the appropriate tab (for example, to specify your favorite device for the COM Port service, select the COM Port tab). Then select the Use the favorite selected above option, and select your favorite device from the list. Deleting devices To delete a device from the Bluetooth Devices folder, highlight the device and then select Device / Delete. Any bond (trust relationship) that you have established with the device is deleted, and the Trimble Recon handheld will be unable to communicate with this device. To connect to the device again, you must discover it, and then re-establish the trust relationship. Page 7

8 Viewing device details To view detailed information about a Bluetooth device in the neighborhood, including the Bluetooth services that it offers, highlight the device in the Bluetooth Devices folder and then select Device / Properties. Connecting to ActiveSync technology You can use Bluetooth to connect to the ActiveSync technology on a Bluetooth-enabled desktop computer, instead of making a physical connection with a serial or USB cable. Note: The exact steps required depend on the desktop computer. To establish a Bluetooth ActiveSync connection: 1. From the Bluetooth user interface on the desktop computer, identify the virtual COM port of the Bluetooth serial device. To do this, open the My Bluetooth Device screen on the PC and right-click the Bluetooth Serial Device icon. In this example, the virtual COM port is COM5. 2. Start the ActiveSync technology. 3. Select File / Connection Settings. The Connection Settings dialog appears. 4. Select the Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port check box. 5. From the list, select the correct COM port (for example, COM5) and click OK. 6. On the Trimble Recon handheld, tap the Bluetooth icon in the command bar, and from the menu that appears select Bluetooth ActiveSync. 7. If there is more than one Bluetooth device in range that offers a serial port service, and you have not selected a favorite device for ActiveSync technology connections, a list of devices appears. Select the correct device from the list and then tap Select. The Trimble Recon handheld connects to the ActiveSync technology on the desktop computer. Page 8

9 Troubleshooting The following table lists some common problems that may occur. Problem The Trimble Recon handheld cannot connect to another Bluetooth device. The software continues to request selection of devices such as a phone, fax, or printer. Cause and Solution One of the devices is not turned on. Turn on both devices and enable Bluetooth. The selected Bluetooth port on one of the devices is already in use. Disconnect from the Bluetooth device that is using this port. The Socket Bluetooth card is not fully inserted in the handheld. Make sure that the card is seated firmly in the CompactFlash slot. The Socket Bluetooth card is not turned on. Tap the Bluetooth icon in the command bar, and then select Turn Transmitter ON. You are trying to connect on the wrong port. Tap the Bluetooth icon, select Advanced Features / My Bluetooth Device, and in the COM Ports tab check which COM port is assigned to the service that you want to use. Make sure that the same COM port is specified in your application. You have not disabled the services that you do not want to use. Tap the Bluetooth icon, select Advanced Features / My Bluetooth Device, and in the COM Ports tab clear the check boxes beside any services that you do not want to use. You have not selected a favorite device for each service you use. Tap the Bluetooth icon, select Advanced Features / Bluetooth Devices, and then select Tools / My Favorites. Select any devices that you regularly use. Page 9
