4 The Wireless Communication Package The Palm Tungsten C is the currently recommended PDA for wireless communication with the LI LI-COR does not support other brands of PDAs for use with the LI The Wireless Communication Package includes the following: Palm Tungsten C (includes 2 CDs, desktop software CD and software essentials CD, and a cradle/charger with AC cable and USB cable) Cisco Wireless Card Palm RS-232 Serial Cable Palm Battery Pack (Palm Power To Go) Palm Universal Charger Travel Kit Palm/LI-8100 Configuration Instruction Manual 4

5 Configuration Procedure Introduction Before you start the configuration process, make sure the Palm Tungsten C is fully charged. Connect the Palm cradle to the computer using the USB cable attached to the cradle, and to AC power (if you are outside the United States you may also need to use the Palm Universal Travel Kit). Place the Palm Tungsten C on the cradle and let it charge fully (this can take a few minutes to a few hours). When done charging the Palm Tungsten C, follow the Palm software installation process (two CDs are included). Next, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the Palm Tungsten C, if you are not already. Configuring the Palm To configure the Palm Tungsten C for use with the LI-8100, follow the steps below: 1. If you have not installed the Palm software, insert the Palm Tungsten C Desktop Software CD (CD1) into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. Follow the instructions and complete the installation. Remove CD1. Install CD2 (software essentials), if desired. 2. Insert the LI-8100 software CD. The screen below will appear. The Update PC Application Software button will install the Windows software and the Data Analysis Software (FV8100 File Viewer). To install the Palm Application Software, click on Add Palm Application to HotSync List. 5

6 3. The window below will appear. Highlight the LI-8100 Palm software in the Handheld list. The properties of the software are shown to the right (name, size and type). Below that is displayed Ready for HotSync operation. 6

7 4. Turn on the Palm Tungsten C. Place it on the cradle. Press the HotSync button on the cradle. The Palm Tungsten C will load the LI-8100 Palm software and when finished, an LI-8100 icon will appear on the screen. 5. Remove the Palm Tungsten C from the cradle. 6. Open the Analyzer Control Unit case. Remove the access cover. Install the wireless card into either of the two PC card slots. 7. Now we will configure the LI-8100 and the Palm to communicate via a wireless connection. First we will configure the LI Connect a battery or other power supply. Turn on the LI Connect the round female end of the adapter cable to the LI-8100 RS-232 port (male port). Connect the 9-pin male end of the adapter cable to the 9- pin female end of the Palm RS-232 cable. Connect the Palm RS-232 cable to the Palm Tungsten C. 7

8 10. Turn on the Palm Tungsten C. Tap the LI-8100 icon. Tap Connect by Serial. Wait while the Status: Querying message is displayed and the Instrument Status screen is active. 11. Tap the top of the screen and select the 8100 menu. Select Instrument Settings. Name the instrument (tap the space next to Name and use the keypad to enter the name. Tap Send. Tap the screen next to Network Params. 12. The new screen is named Set Network Parameters. a. Tap next to Network Name. The Set Network Name screen appears. Use the keypad to enter a name. If you use multiple words with spaces, make sure you record the exact name with the appropriate space(s), as you will use it again when you configure the Palm Tungsten C. 8

9 b. Leave Security DISABLED. c. Tap next to Wireless Channel and select a number (i.e., 10). You will need to remember this number in a later step. d. Tap next to IP Address. The Set Network IP Address screen appears with four spaces separated by three dots. e. Tap the space to the left and enter 192. Tap the next space and enter a 3-digit number. Repeat for the third and fourth spaces. f. Record the IP Address, as you will need it again later. When done, tap Send. g. The Set Network Parameters screen appears again. 9

10 h. Next to Netmask, the numbers should appear. (If not, tap the space next to Netmask). i. A new screen named Set Network Netmask appears. Type and tap Send. 13. Turn the LI-8100 off and then back on again. Wait for the Ready light to come on. 14. Next, we will configure the Palm Tungsten C. Go to the home screen of the Palm Tungsten C by pressing the Home key (lower right). Scroll down the screen and tap the Prefs icon. 15. The Preferences screen appears. Under Communication, tap Network. The new screen will read Preferences at the top left corner and Network at the top right corner. Next to Service, Wi-Fi appears. Tap Details. A new screen named Wi-Fi Configuration appears. Tap Wi-Fi Preferences 16. The new screen is called Preferences Wi-Fi. A Wi-Fi Connection Progress message will appear briefly. The Palm will attempt to connect to the Soil Network 1 that was established while configuring the LI Make sure the Wi-Fi is On, the Network (use drop-down menu) is set to the name you chose in step 13 above (i.e., Soil Network 1) and the Signal reads Adhoc network. 10

11 17. Tap Info. A new screen appears named Wi-Fi Info. Tap Edit Network. A new screen appears named Edit Wi-Fi Network. Under Network Name (SSID) the Network Name you chose in step 12 will appear (i.e., Soil network 1 ). Tap Details. A new screen appears named Network Details. On this screen, below Connect to the Peer-to-Peer (ad-hoc) line appears. At the bottom of the screen, the Channel number that appears will be the same as the number you chose in step 12 above. 18. Tap Advanced. A new screen appears named Advanced Network. Next to IP Address is displayed Automatic. Tap Automatic and choose Manual. The DNS Server also changes from Automatic to Manual. Three new lines of information under IP Address are displayed. The first one is named IP Address and it contains some spaces with three dots. Use the keypad of the Palm Tungsten C to enter an IP address different than the IP Address you entered in step 12. If, for example, you used in step 12, choose [Warning: if the two IP Addresses are the same, a wireless connection will not be established]. Tap a blank space on the screen. The Subnet Mask space will be filled automatically with the same numbers used for Netmask in step 12. if not, enter The DNS Server and Router line spaces will be left empty. 19. Tap OK three times in succession, tap Done two times, and then press Home on the keypad. 20. Turn the LI-8100 off and then back on. While waiting for the Ready light to come on, disconnect the Palm Tungsten C from the Palm RS-232 cable. Tap the LI-8100 icon on the home screen. Tap Connect with TCPIP. The Enter Target IP Address screen will appear. The IP Address shown here is the one entered in step 12. Tap Save and then OK. The Instrument Status screen will appear. The Palm Tungsten C will connect to the LI-8100 via the wireless card. When the Instrument Status screen displays current instrument information (i.e., Name, etc.) you have successfully established a wireless connection. 11

12 Troubleshooting If you cannot establish a wireless network connection, check the following: 1. Are you using a Palm Tungsten C? Other models of PDAs manufactured by Palm, or PDAs manufactured by other companies (i.e., HP, Sony etc) will not work. 2. Did you enter the Network Name correctly? 3. Verify instrument IP address is correct. 4. Verify Palm IP address is not the same as the instrument IP address. 5. Verify the network type is peer-to-peer ad-hoc, not access point. 6. Power the instrument off, make sure the wireless card is seated properly, and turn instrument back on. 7. Shorten the distance between the LI-8100 and Palm Tungsten C. 12

13 Enable Encryption Function In order to communicate with other devices, the LI-8100 must be given a unique IP address, a net mask, network name, and channel. Optionally, data encryption can be enabled. WEP (Wired Equivalent Policy) is an encryption standard built into b, and is supported by the LI If data encryption is enabled, the same 40-bit (5 character) key must be entered on all devices of the WLAN. The key is used for data encryption and decryption. 1. Connect the Palm Tungsten C to the LI-8100 via the RS-232 cables. Turn on the Palm Tungsten C. Tap the LI-8100 icon. Next, tap Connect by Serial. Wait while the Status: Querying process is progressing. Wait a few seconds until the Instrument Status screen is filled. 2. Tap the top of the screen and select the 8100 menu. Select Instrument Settings. Tap Network Parameters. The Network Name and other parameters are already entered. The Security parameter reads DISABLED. Tap DISABLED. The Set Network Security screen appears. Tap the check box next to Enable Security. Similarly, check Change Encryption Key and enter a five-character word using the keypad. Tap Send. [Warning: You must choose a five-character word made of either letters, numbers, or a combination of both.] Next to Security it should now display ENABLED. 3. Press the Home key on the Palm Tungsten C. Turn the LI-8100 off and back on. Wait for the ready light to come on. 4. Scroll down the home screen of the Palm and tap the Prefs icon. Tap Network. Tap Details. Tap Wi-Fi Preferences. Tap Info. Tap Edit network. Tap and check the WEP Encryption field. A new line will appear named WEP Key. Tap the space next to it. The Network WEP Key screen appears. Next to Key Type, choose 40-bit ASCII. On the line below WEP Key(5 characters) enter the five-character Encryption Key you used in step 2 above. Tap OK. On the Edit Wi-Fi Network screen the WEP Key now reads Assigned. Tap OK. Tap Done three times in succession. Press the Home key on the Palm Tungsten C keypad. 5. You are now ready to use the Palm Tungsten C in encrypted mode. 13
