Future Implications for the Vehicle When Considering the Internet of Things (IoT) FTF-AUT-F0082 Richard Soja Automotive MCU Systems Engineer A P R TM External Use
Agenda Overview of Existing Automotive Electronics Impact of the Intelligent Transportation System on the Vehicle Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) Concepts Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) Concepts Freescale Products for the Automotive IoT External Use 1
Session Objectives After completing this session you will be able to: Use terminology associated with IoT Observe how IoT might affect the automobile Be more familiar with Freescale automotive MCUs External Use 2
Today s Car Complex computerized control Millions of lines of code, from multiple vendors Dozens of distinct ECUs, from multiple vendors Shared internal networking (e.g., CAN, FlexRay) Increasing external communications features Telematics, Bluetooth, TPMS, RDS, XM radio, GPS, keyless start/entry, USB ports, WiFi, etc External Use 3
Tomorrow s Car Much More of Everything The Infrastructure The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) V2V/ACAS, V2I, traffic control, autonomous driving, real-time data fusion, pervasive sensing External Use 4
Growth of Computing Devices Millions of Devices between Internet of Things Mobile Internet PC Internet PC Minicomputer Mainframe 50 Billion IoT devices estimated by External Use 5
Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) External Use 6
Automotive IoT The Internet of Things (IoT) extends to the automobile through wireless connections to the ITS infrastructure Infotainment Digital Radio, Streaming Video, Connected Games Phone service Internet browser ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Lane departure warning Collision avoidance Sign Recognition Road geometry tracking Parking Assistance Vehicle Parameter Monitors Tire Pressure Brake wear Oil change Access to the Cloud helps Integration But introduces security concerns External Use 7
The Cloud Provides a communication pathway back to the data center Enables big data type analytics of data that's broadcast between smart devices and sensors in the vehicle or other road structures Opens up the opportunity to inform the driver about local problems and alternatives For example sensors installed on a bridge can signal structural or weather related problems, such as icing, to road side units or directly to the vehicle Messaging Protocols XMPP, MQ/AMQP, MQTT/CoAP Distributed large scale data traffic Data Distribution and Control Protocol DDS High Performance 10uS Node based publish/subscribe model External Use 8
Smart Vehicles Sensors in the steering wheel read the driver s blood sugar levels and other biometrics Screen, lights or haptic signals alert the driver Vehicle sends biometrics and other relevant data to physician s office Vehicle calls emergency services if health issues escalate External Use 9
What is Driving this Change? Personal Connectivity The proliferation of mobile data networks, combined with low-cost and highly capable devices such as smart phones and tablets Big Data IoT and the cloud enable huge amounts of data gathering and analysis. Moreover, the data can be very personal and location specific offering great opportunities for marketing and sales. External Use 10
Disruptive Benefits from IoT Self-repairing device As in-vehicle telematics grows increasingly more capable, being able to preemptively diagnose, repair, and provide usage information to manufacturers becomes a competitive differentiator Tesla provides a wireless software update to raise the underbody clearance of the car at highway speeds, to reduce the chances of impact with road debris Rental by the hour No insurance, maintenance or any of the other ownership headaches Driverless cars It s not just Google traditional automakers such as BMW, VW, Toyota and GM are also developing self-driving cars. There are even predictions that autonomous cars will be on the road by the decade s end. Groups like the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have formed special committees to draft autonomous-vehicle standards. External Use 11
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) External Use 12
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Safety Future safety needs may call for direct communication between vehicles Blind spot caution Intersection warning Forward collision warning External Use 13
Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication DSRC Dedicated Short-Range Communication Similar to Wi-Fi 5.9GHz, 6Mb/s Many US and global stakeholders Advantages over conventional methods Non line-of-sight capability 360 degrees with one device Can be extended to traffic signals, work zones, pedestrians, trains, bicyclists NHTSA Announced plans to work on a regulatory proposal that would require V2V devices in new vehicles in a future year External Use 14
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (Internet of Cars) DSRC But does it scale well? Throttle Data Rate Modulate Transmit Power External Use 15
What About Attacks? Need to prevent hackers sending bogus messages Could create ghost vehicle Could be solved with Public Key Authentication Certification, Revocation For More Information on Auto Security: Market Trends and Challenges in Vehicle Security FTF-AUT-F0080 External Use 16
DSRC Standards DSRC applicable Standards are: IEEE Security IEEE Networking Services SAE J2735 DSRC Message Set Dictionary J2735 performance/operation requirements covered by J2945 J will cover general requirements J will cover Basic Safety Message requirements e.g. sensor accuracy requirements to populate the BSM J will cover other messages Protocol Overhead J2735 Basic Safety Message Part I Mandatory position, motion, control, veh. size Part II Optional Reduced data rate, event based flags, OEM options ECDSA Signature and Certificate External Use 17
Freescale Products for the Automotive Internet of Things External Use 18
