Develop hardware and software to enable Wireless printing using a USB printer Setting up of server device/printer Device inquiry Sending of print data to printer
What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth is also known as IEEE standard This Technology is a radio standard and communications protocol that was designed for low power consumption and for short ranges of less than 100 meters. All Bluetooth devices operate in the 2.4-GHz frequency band. Use of frequency hopping technique to reduce interference from other devices such as microwave ovens. Frequency hopping using 79 frequencies Classes of Bluetooth Class meters Class2-10 meters Class3-1 meter
Wireless control of and communication between a cell phone and a hands-free headset or car kit. Transfer of files between devices using Object Exchange Profile (OBEX). Transfer of contact details, calendar appointments, and reminders between devices using Object Exchange( OBEX) profile. Wireless communications with PC input and output devices such as the mouse, bar-code readers, keyboard and printer.
Adapters and modules Bluetooth adapters and modules are the commercial implementations of Bluetooth technology. Adapters are mainly USB interface devices that are connected to PCs. Modules may have more than one interface therefore find more applications than complete adapters. Programming modules and adapters Modules are controlled using command packets sent through one interface. The command packets may be: Command packet Event packet ACL data packet Synchronous data packet 6/21/2016 bluetooth printing support
Bluetooth profiles Are defined to enable interoperability of devices from various manufacturers Define how profiles inter-operate Examples HCRP SPP BPP 6/21/2016 bluetooth printing support
Procedure for setting up communication Find the device Device Inquiry process. Connect to the device Page scan. Discover what services the device supports SDP. Decide what service to connect to SDP. Connect to the service. 6/21/2016 bluetooth printing support
printing Spooler and spooling process The spooler is loaded at system start-up and continues to run until the operating system is shut down. Used to locate d The default data type for a print job is the enhanced metafile. EMF record -structure used to store text output commands and raster graphics commands. When an application calls StartDoc, the spooler creates a spool file and a data file and begins storing EMF records in the spool file. Printer drivers convert device independent GDI calls to device dependent commands which are later sent to the printer for the physical printing to take place. A port monitor is then passes the raw device commands over the network, through a port. 6/21/2016 bluetooth printing support
Client/server architecture computer-client printer-server Initial project design
Bluetooth module is interfaced to a microcontroller via UART -ROK Microcontroller the connected to printer via USB interface -AT89C5131 TISIL -AVR Command Packets and event packets received through UART interface and sent to the printer via USB interface.
Current design
Both client computer and server connected via Bluetooth adapters. The server is initially set up in a discoverable mode. -enables computers to find it. Client then searches for Bluetooth devices in its proximity. If a printer is found the client tries to establish a connection to it. After making the connection printing may be initiated by the sending of data to the remote server 6/21/2016 bluetooth printing support
Socket communication
TOOLS REQUIRED Hardware Bluetooth modules(2) Personal computers(2) USB printer Software Platform SDK for windows XP SP2 Microsoft Visual studio 6.0 WDK-Windows Driver Kit Windriver software
PROBLEMS hardware AT89C5131 TISIL ROK module software Windows Driver Development Kit Widcomm stack software
RESULTS Printing was not achieved due to difficulty in developing driver for the printer. However service discovery was possible as well as sending of data to Bluetooth devices via sockets. Nearby devices could be discovered.
CONCLUSION Printers connected to remote hosts such as PCs, PDAs and phones usually require an embedded product that draws power from the printer to which it is connected. There may be no need for extra external circuitry to power the device. This was the part of the aim of this project but due to unavailability of the ROK module, this was not implemented. The main problem using the approach taken in this project is development of drivers to communicate with the printer.
FURTHER WORK Implementation of the initial design using a USB microcontroller and a Bluetooth module interfaced to the printer. Implementation of a printing profile to connect to a commercial Bluetooth enabled printers. Widcomm protocol stack may be used here. Driver development may be possible using Jungo s Windriver software available from or using the Windows Driver Development Kit from Microsoft Corporation.
