2 HP understands that the decision to select an appropriate device for a student can be a difficult one. We have put together a brief glossary to help explain what the key elements of a device are, recommendations, and how these elements contribute to the students learning. Glossary: Operating System Often abbreviated as OS, an operating system is a program that controls and manages the hardware and other software on a computer. All computers and computer-like devices have operating systems, including your laptop, tablet, desktop, and smartphone. Some examples include versions of Microsoft Windows, Apple s macos (formerly OS X), ios, Chrome OS etc. Invest in education today for the career tomorrow. At HP the learner s needs come first. Every learner has different priorities so our devices come with a range of options. Processor RAM Storage: (HDD versus SSD) Cores Resolution Ports Touch Inking 2-in-1 or hybrid Convertible Wireless/WiFi Cloud Alternately referred to as a central processor, or microprocessor, a processor is the Central Processing Unit (CPU) of the computer. Aim for the highest processor you can afford, especially if your student will be working in subjects such as engineering or media design. The Intel range moves from the lowest CPU speed to highest: Celeron, Pentium, i3, i5 and the premium i7. Random Access Memory (RAM) is a hardware device that allows information to be stored and retrieved on a computer. The more RAM, the better the ability of your device to load programs and applications. However, if the computer is turned off, all data contained in RAM is lost. All your files, photos, douctments etc are stored in a hard drive, not the RAM. Recommended: 4GB or more. A hard disk drive, sometimes referred to as a hard drive, HD, or HDD, is a hardware device that permanently stores and retrieves data on a computer. Because it contains a moving part, the HDD requires a fan to cool it which means noise and heat are present. A Solid-State Drive (SSD) is an alternate means of permanently storing and retrieving data on a computer. Unlike a hard disk drive, an SSD has no moving parts which gives it advantages such as accessing stored information faster, noiseless operation, higher reliability, and lower power consumption. Processors can have a single core or multiple cores. A processor with two cores is called a dual-core processor and four cores is called a quad-core processor. The more cores a processor has, the more sets of instructions the processor can receive and process at the same time, which makes the computer faster. Resolution is the image quality displayed on a monitor. The resolution is measured by the number of pixels horizontal by pixels vertically e.g. 800x600. When the resolution increases, images/text become crisper BUT can also become smaller as more pixels try and occupy the screen space. Recommended: Any HP device. A hardware port or peripheral port is a hole or connection found on the front, side or back of a computer. Ports allow computers to access external devices such as USB s, external hard drives or printers. Recommended: All HP devices feature a range of ports from USB-A, USB-C, Ethernet, HDMI. Check individual models. Touch refers to a touch screen enabled device. Often popular with younger students who are not as comfortable with a mouse. Note: not all touch screens are pen/inking enabled. Windows Ink enables you to write on the touchscreen of the device with a digital pen or finger as you would on paper, creating notes, drawing, and sharing your analog thoughts in the digital world. Windows Ink is integrated into apps like OneNote, Microsoft Edge, and Office 365. Recommended: Pavilion x360, Spectre x2, Spectre x360. When referring to a laptop, hybrid is a slang term used to describe a detachable 2-in-1 computer. A 2-in-1 consists of a screen and removable keyboard and has the functionality of both a laptop computer and a tablet. Hybrid computers give the user the ability to have the power of a computer with the increased mobility of a tablet. For example, a student could work on the hybrid computer as a laptop throughout the day for schoolwork and then detach the screen and use it as a tablet to draw, read or watch videos. Recommended: Spectre x2 A convertible laptop is a 2-in-1 hand-held machine that provides the function and computing power of traditional laptops, with the hands-on, tactile user experience of a tablet. Short for Wireless Fidelity, WiFi utilises one of the IEEE wireless standards to achieve a wireless connection to a network. With WiFi, any compatible device with the proper reception and access rights can connect to the network without having to attach a cable to that device. Recommended: all HP devices cover standards required for schools, including a/b/g/n/ac. The storing and accessing of data and programs over the internet instead of the computer s hard drive. The cloud is just a metaphor for the internet. For some students, it will be a need for touch. For others, it will be processing power to make the most of software such as Photoshop. For many, the deciding factor will be mobility the size and weight of the device that s carried each day. Price will always be important, but choosing the device that s right for each student s learning requirements will provide the best outcome for all.
