18 Usig your otebook Coectig a power source You ca use either a AC adapter or a rechargeable battery pack as a power source. Usig the AC adapter To use the AC adapter, proceed as follows: 1 Plug the cable attached to the AC adapter (1) ito the DC I coector (2) o the computer. 2 Plug oe ed of the power cord (3) ito the AC adapter. 3 Plug the other ed of the power cord ito a AC outlet. 18 Use your otebook oly with the supplied AC adapter. To discoect your otebook completely from mais voltage, uplug the AC adapter. Make sure that the socket outlet is easily accessible.

19 Usig your otebook Usig the battery pack You ca use oe or two batteries as a source of power. You ca isert the secod battery pack ito the multipurpose bay o the right side of the computer. Additioal battery packs are available as a separate optio. The battery pack supplied with your computer is ot fully charged at the time of purchase. Isertig the battery pack To isert the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Ope the cover of the battery bay Isert the battery pack with the label facig dow ito the battery bay o the left side of the computer. 3 Close the cover of the battery bay util it clicks. Whe the computer is directly coected to AC power ad has a battery pack iserted i the battery bay, it uses power from the AC outlet.

20 Usig your otebook Chargig the battery pack To charge the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Coect the AC adapter to the computer. 2 Isert the battery pack. The computer automatically charges the battery (1) (the battery idicator (2) light flashes i a double blik patter as the battery charges). Whe the battery is 85% full, the battery idicator light turs off. This process takes approximately oe hour for the PCG-FX203/PCG-FX203K whe the system is off. If the system is o, it takes oe ad a half hour. To charge the battery completely, cotiue chargig for a additioal hour. There are two battery idicator lights o the computer: 1 idicates the status of the battery pack i the battery bay o the left side of the computer. 2 idicates the status of the battery pack i the multi-purpose bay o the right side of the computer. 20 battery idicator light status o sigle blik double blik off meaig The computer is usig battery power. The battery is ruig out of power. The battery is chargig. The computer is usig AC power. Whe the battery is ruig out of power, both the battery ad power idicators blik. Keep the battery pack i the computer while it is directly coected to AC power. The battery pack cotiues to charge while you are usig the computer.

21 Usig your otebook If the battery level falls to below 10%, you should either attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery or shut dow your computer ad isert a fully charged battery. You ca exted battery life by chagig the power maagemet modes i the PowerPael utility. The battery pack supplied with your computer is a lithium io battery ad ca be recharged ay time. Chargig a partially discharged battery does ot affect battery life. The battery idicator light is o while you use the battery pack as a power source. Whe the battery life is early depleted, the battery idicator starts flashig. For some software applicatios ad some peripheral devices, your computer may ot eter Hiberate mode whe battery life is low. To avoid loss of data whe usig battery power, you should save your data frequetly ad maually activate a power maagemet mode, such as Stadby or Hiberate. Whe the computer is directly coected to AC power ad has a battery pack iserted i the battery bay, it uses power from the AC outlet. 21

22 Usig your otebook Removig the battery pack To remove the battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Tur off the computer. 2 Ope the cover of the battery bay. 3 Pull out the battery pack Close the cover of the battery bay. You may lose data if you remove the battery pack while the computer is o ad ot coected to the AC adapter or if you remove the battery while the computer is i Stadby mode.

23 Usig your otebook Usig the secod battery pack You ca purchase a secod rechargeable battery pack. With two battery packs, you ca exted the time you use your computer with battery power. Whe usig two battery packs, the battery pack you isert first charges first. The battery pack you isert secod charges whe the first battery pack is 85 percet full. You ca moitor which battery pack is chargig by observig the battery idicator lights. Isertig the secod battery pack To isert a secod battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 If the floppy disk drive is i the multi-purpose bay (1), remove the device. 2 Isert the battery pack (2) ito the multi-purpose bay. The battery 2 idicator light turs o Attach the weight saver (3) to the computer to stabilize the battery pack. 4 Slide the eject lever o the bottom of the weight saver toward the frot of the computer to lock it.

24 Usig your otebook 24 If you attach two battery packs, you ca remove oe of them without shuttig dow the computer. Whe removig oe battery pack, make sure that the other battery pack idicator is o. If the idicator of the battery pack your are goig to remove is o, right click the battery ico o the taskbar ad click the switch discharge battery meu.

25 Usig your otebook Chargig the secod battery pack To charge the secod battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Keep the battery pack (1-3) i the computer while it is coected to AC power. The battery idicator (2) flashes while the battery is chargig. 2 Whe the battery idicator stops flashig, the battery is fully charged. 25

26 Usig your otebook Removig the secod battery pack To remove the secod battery pack, proceed as follows: 1 Slide the eject lever o the bottom of the weight saver, i the directio of arrow 1. 2 Slide the release lever o the bottom of the computer i the directio of arrow Remove the weight saver. 4 Pull out the battery pack 5 Reisert the weight saver.

27 Usig your otebook Startig your otebook To start your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Slide the LCD lock lever (1) i the directio of the arrow, ad lift the cover Press the power butto (2) of the computer util the gree power idicator (3) light turs o. 3 If ecessary, press <F>+<F5>* to adjust the brightess cotrols for the LCD display. To icrease the brightess, use the up or right arrow keys. To decrease, use the dow or left arrow keys. * <F>+<F5> is oly possible oce you are i Widows. If you press the power butto for more tha four secods, the computer will tur off.

28 Usig your otebook Shuttig dow your otebook It is importat that you shut dow your computer properly so you do ot lose usaved data. To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto o the Widows taskbar. 2 Click Shut Dow. The Shut Dow Widows dialog box appears. 3 Select Shut dow. 4 Click OK. 5 Wait for your computer to tur off automatically. The power idicator turs off. 6 Tur off ay peripheral coected to your computer. Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets. If you are uable to shut dow your computer: - Close all software i use. - Remove the PC Cards if iserted. To do so, double-click the Uplug or Eject Hardware ico i the taskbar. Select the hardware you wat to uplug ad click Stop. - Discoect ay USB devices. - The press the <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete> keys at the same time to restart the computer. If this does ot work, you ca press the power butto for more tha four secods. This will shut dow the computer. This operatio may result i data loss. To register your Soy otebook, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Registratio ico o your desktop, 2 Click ext, 3 Click Iteret, 4 Fill i your Registratio card fields, 5 Scroll dow to the bottom of the form ad click Sed, 6 Click OK. You must coect your phoe lie before usig ay olie services, icludig the olie registratio service. To access the olie Registratio web page, you must have a coectio to the Iteret. 29

30 Usig your otebook Usig the keyboard Your keyboard is very similar to a desktop computer s, but the keyboard has additioal keys that perform specific otebook-related tasks. 30

The twelve fuctio keys alog the top of the keyboard are used to perform desigated tasks. For example, i may applicatios, <F1> is the Help key. The task associatd with each fuctio key may vary from oe applicatio to the other. The <Prit Scree> key takes a electroic sapshot of the scree ad moves it to the Widows Clipboard. You ca the paste the screeshot ito a documet ad prit it. The <Isert>, <Back Space> ad <Delete> keys eable you to make correctios. 31 avigatio keys (5) Applicatio key (6) umeric keypad area (7) Operator keys ( ) Widows key (9) F key (10) These keys eable you to move the cursor o the scree. The Applicatio key displays a shortcut meu; pressig this key is equivalet to clickig the right mouse butto. Cotais the keys foud o a typical calculator. The <F> key is used i combiatio with other keys to execute commads.

Do ot eter Stadby mode or tur off the computer whe this idicator light is o. Turs o whe the umber keys i the umeric keypad are active. The hard drive is ot beig accessed. Turs off whe the alphaumeric character keys i the keypad area are active. Caps Lock Scroll Lock Turs o whe the characters appear i uppercase as you type. The <Shift> key lowers the case of typed characters whe Caps Lock is o. Turs o whe the scree scrolls differetly (depeds o the applicatio, o effect i may applicatios). Turs off whe the characters appear i lowercase as you type (uless you hold dow the <Shift> key). Turs off whe the iformatio moves across the display ormally.

See the help file o the WiDVD software for details. Your computer should ot be coected to the port replicator while playig DVD movies or usig DVD applicatios. Close ay ope applicatio before playig a DVD-ROM movie. Whe playig DVD movies o battery power, set the power maagemet profile to DVD. With other profiles, the movies ca be choppy. Do ot switch the power savig modes while playig DVD videos. If the virus checker is active, you eed to disable it. Do ot use residet disc utilities ad residet utilities to speed up access of discs, because they may cause ustable operatio. Make sure that the screesaver is deactivated. Depedig o the display setup properties you selected, you may use the <F>+<F> commad to expad the scree to full scree size. Regio codes idicators are labeled o the DVD discs to idicate i which regio ad what type of player ca play the disc. Uless a '2' or 'all' is labeled o your DVD or o the packagig, you caot play the disc o this player. Do ot try to chage the regio code settigs of the DVD-ROM drive. The computer will retur to its origial state if you restart it. The PC Card slots ca accommodate (at the same time) two Type I, two Type II or oe Type III PC Card. These slots are compatible with Card Bus ports. Use the lower slot for PC Type III cards. Some PC Cards may require you to disable idle devices whe usig the PC Card. You ca use Soy otebook Setup to disable devices. Be sure to use the most recet software driver provided by the PC Card maufacturer. If a! mark appears o the Device Maager tab i the System Properties dialog box, remove the software driver ad the reistall it. You do ot eed to shut dow the computer before isertig or removig a PC Card. Do ot force a PC Card ito the slot. It may damage the coector pis. If you have difficulty isertig a PC Card, check that you are isertig the PC Card i the correct directio. See the maual supplied with your PC Card for more iformatio o use. For some PC Cards, if you alterate betwee ormal power operatio ad Stadby or Hiberate power maagemet modes while the card is iserted, you may fid that a device coected to your system is ot recogized. Reboot your system to correct the problem.

47 Usig your otebook Removig a PC Card Follow the steps below to remove the PC Card while your computer is o. If it is ot removed properly, your system may ot work properly. If you wat to remove a PC Card whe your computer is off, skip steps 1 to 7. To remove a PC Card, proceed as follows: 1 Double-click the Uplug or Eject Hardware ico i the taskbar. The Uplug or Eject Hardware dialog box appears. 2 Select the hardware you wat to uplug. 3 Click Stop. 4 I the Stop a Hardware Device dialog box, cofirm that the device ca be safely removed from the system. 5 Click OK. If you uplug the PC Card from the computer whe it is still tured o, your system might crash ad you might lose data that you did ot save before. Before you remove the PC Card, click the PC Card ico i the taskbar ad close the card. Close ay applicatios that use the PC Card before removig the card. Otherwise, data may be lost. While the card is iserted, your computer may ot eter the Hiberate power maagemet mode. It may eter Stadby mode. It is recommeded to remove the card whe your computer eters Hiberate mode by pressig the <F>+<F12> keys or by usig the PowerPael Utility, ad whe it is set to eter Hiberate automatically while usig a battery as the source of power. To coect a phoe lie, proceed as follows: 1 Plug oe ed of the phoe cable (1) ito the phoe lie jack o the computer. 2 Plug the other ed ito the wall jack (2). 51 A coutry-specific phoe plug is supplied with your VAIO otebook, allowig you to plug the phoe lie ito the wall jack. We recommed you to use the supplied plug, because the usage of ay other phoe plug ca decrease the coectio quality. Your computer caot be coected to a coi-operated telephoe, ad may ot work with multiple phoe lies or a private brach exchage (PBX). If you coect the modem to a parallel coected phoe lie, the modem or the other coected device may ot fuctio properly. Some of these coectios may result i excess electrical curret ad could cause a malfuctio i the iteral modem. Whe your computer is off, press a PPK, ad the system will be powered ad lauch the appropriate applicatio. Usig power savig modes Whe you use a battery as the source of power for your computer, you ca take advatage of power maagemet settigs to coserve battery life. I additio to the ormal operatig mode, which allows you to tur off specific devices, your computer has two distict power savig modes: Stadby ad Hiberate. Whe usig battery power, you should be aware that the computer automatically eters Hiberate mode whe the remaiig battery charge drops below 7 percet, regardless of the power maagemet settig you select. If the battery level falls below 10 percet, you should either attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery or shut dow your computer ad isert a fully charged battery. 53 Usig ormal mode This is the ormal state of your computer whe it is i use. The gree power idicator light is o i this mode. To save power, you ca tur off a specific device such as the LCD or the hard disk. Usig Stadby mode The computer saves the curret state of the system i RAM ad switches off power to the CPU. The umber power light flashes i this mode.

54 Usig your otebook To activate Stadby mode, proceed as follows: Press <F>+<Esc> Or, Press the power butto. You ca also use the PowerPael utility to eter Stadby mode. To retur to ormal mode, proceed as follows: Press ay key. If you press the power butto for more tha four secods, the computer will switch off automatically. Whe the computer is i Stadby mode, you caot isert a disk. Stadby requires less time tha Hiberate. Stadby uses more power tha Hiberate. If you do ot work with your computer o AC power for 30 miutes, it will eter System Stadby mode. As a result, if you are usig the DVD-ROM drive, the operatio will be iterrupted. 54 To avoid this, proceed as follows: 1 Right-click the PowerPael ico i the taskbar. 2 Right-click Edit/Create Profiles. 3 I the left pael, select AC Power profile. 4 I the right pael, right-click Stadby timer - 30 mi (this is the default time) ad select Off. 5 Whe you close the widow, the Profile Editor message box appears askig if you wat to save the ew settigs. 6 Click Yes.
