Keep your forearms horizotal, with your wrists i a eutral, comfortable positio (2) while usig the keyboard or mouse ot at a agle. Let your upper arms hag aturally at your sides. Place the mouse at the same level as the keyboard ad use your whole arm to move it. Positio ad viewig agle of the moitor Set the display at a comfortable viewig distace (3). Make sure the display scree is at eye level or slightly lower. Use the display s tiltig feature, if available, to fid the best positio. You ca reduce eye-strai ad muscle-fatigue by adjustig the tilt of the display to the proper positio. Remember to adjust the brightess settig of the display. If you are usig a CRT moitor, make sure that the refresh rate is at a optimal level, that is, at least 75Hz. Furiture ad posture Sit i a chair with good back support (4). Adjust the level of the chair so your feet are flat o the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. Sit i a relaxed, upright posture ad avoid slouchig forward or leaig too far backwards. Lightig Choose a locatio where widows ad lights do ot create glare or reflectio o the display. Use idirect lightig to avoid bright spots reflectig o the display. You ca also purchase accessories for your display that help reduce glare. Proper lightig adds to your comfort ad work effectiveess. Startig your computer Oce you have all the compoets set up as described i the Gettig Started guide, you ca begi to use your computer. To start up your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Press the power butto o your moitor to tur the display o (1). 2 Press the power butto o the system uit util the blue power idicator light turs o (2). 3 Push the power butto o the speakers to tur the soud o (3). 15 If you press the power butto for more tha four secods, the computer will switch itself off.

To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Click the Start butto. 2 Click Tur Off Computer. The Tur off computer scree appears. 3 Click Tur Off. Wait for your computer to tur off automatically. The power idicator turs off. 4 Tur off ay peripherals coected to your computer. Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets or to cosider other users. If you are uable to shut dow your computer; - Close all software i use. - Discoect ay USB devices. - Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete> at the same time. If you have ot chaged the default settig, you will eter the Task Maager. Select Tur Off from the Shut Dow meu to tur the computer off. Alteratively, press <Alt>+<F4> ad select Tur Off from the scree that appears. If this does ot work, you ca press the power butto for more tha four secods. This will shut dow the computer. This operatio may result i loss of data. If you wat to shut dow the computer for a short period oly, you ca save power by usig the Stadby mode. Go to Start, Tur Off Computer, ad select Stad By (see Usig power savig modes (page 54) for details). 16

The twelve fuctio keys alog the top of the keyboard are used to perform desigated tasks. For example, i may applicatios, <F1> is the Help key. The task associated with each fuctio key may vary from oe applicatio to aother. The <Isert>, <Back Space> ad <Delete> keys eable you to make correctios whe typig. Lock keys (4) Press <Caps Lock> oce to activate the uppercase characters. Use the <um Lock> key to activate the umerical keypad. Prit Scree key (5) The <Prt Sc> key takes a electroic sapshot of the scree ad moves it to the Widows Clipboard. Use the umeric keypad area to type umbers or to perform mathematical calculatios such as additio ad subtractio. ote that you must press the <um Lock> key to activate the keypad. These keys eable you to move the cursor o the scree. The <Applicatio> key displays a shortcut meu; pressig this key is equivalet to clickig the right mouse butto. Several keys are used i combiatio with at least oe other key: <Ctrl>, <Alt> ad <Shift>. Whe held dow at the same time as aother key, the <Ctrl> (Cotrol) ad <Alt> (Alterate) keys offer aother way to execute commads. For example, i may applicatios, istead of choosig the Save commad from a meu, you ca hold dow <Ctrl> ad press <S> (referred to as <Ctrl>+<S>). The <Shift> key is used to type capital letters or special symbols such ad $. The key with the Widows logo displays the Widows Start meu; it is equivalet to clickig the Start butto o the taskbar. Press the - butto to decrease volume, ad the + butto to icrease. Press oce to mute the system soud, press agai to restore the soud.

Turs o whe the letters appear i uppercase as you type. The <Shift> key lowers the case of typed letters whe Caps Lock is o. Turs o whe the scree scrolls differetly (ot all applicatios support this fuctio). 21 Turs off whe the alphaumeric character keys i the keypad area are active. Turs off whe the letters appear i lowercase as you type (uless you hold dow the <Shift> key). Turs off whe the iformatio moves across the display ormally.

23 Usig your VAIO desktop Soy VAIO Desktop User Guide Settig up the moitor If your VAIO desktop is delivered with a moitor, it may be delivered with a digital 15" or 17'' LCD (XGA TFT) moitor or with a commo aalogue CRT moitor, depedig o your model ad vedor. For more iformatio o how to use your delivered moitor, refer to the user maual that came with it. You ca also refer to the sectio Coectig a exteral display (page 59). Coectig the moitor To coect your moitor, proceed as follows: 1 Plug oe ed of the moitor cable ito the back pael of your computer. 2 Plug the other ed of the moitor cable ito the back of your moitor. The moitor is ow ready for use. There are two ports: oe for DVI screes ad oe for commo VGA ad CRT screes. Make sure you are usig the appropriate coector. Your computer has bee equipped with a TV-tuer board. I combiatio with Soy's Giga Pocket software, it allows you to: Watch, record ad play back aalogue broadcasted cable ad terrestrial TV-programs, all by remote cotrol; Digitise aalogue video ad audio usig the S-Video or composite ad audio iputs; Maage your video uits (capsules), preview them ad create multiple folders; Set up a timer to record chaels at a repeated time; Susped viewig TV (time-shiftig); Stream your recorded TV cotets via Etheret (or WLA) to coected PCs; Export your video capsules to MPEG2, MPEG1 ad DVI-AVI-files; View recorded clips o cliet PCs located i other rooms usig PicoPlayer. 23 Copyright protectio People who create artistic works such as music are etitled to a "copyright", meaig that they have exclusive rights to dictate how their work is used. 26 Usig your VAIO desktop Soy VAIO Desktop User Guide To coect terrestrial or cable TV to your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Plug oe ed of your atea cable / cable-tv cable (ot supplied) ito the Atea port (5) o the back of the computer. 2 Plug the other ed i the TV wall socket. To coect a exteral video/audio source (such as a video camera, VCR or DVD player), proceed as follows: 1 Coect your video/audio device s video cable to the S-Video (4) or Video-i port (3), depedig o the type of cable supplied with the exteral device. If the video source has both a composite ad a S-Video output, you are recommeded to use the S-Video output as this will result i higher quality video. 2 Coect the left ad right audio cables ito the right (1) ad left (2) audio chael ports. 27 Usig your VAIO desktop Soy VAIO Desktop User Guide Usig the remote cotrol Your VAIO comes with a remote cotrol with which you ca cotrol Giga Pocket, VAIO Media, SoicStage ad PowerDVD for VAIO. Before you ca use the remote cotrol, you must isert two AA alkalie batteries ad coect the ifrared receiver. Isertig the batteries ad coectig the ifrared receiver To isert the batteries, proceed as follows: 1 Slide the battery cover i the directio of the arrow. 2 Isert two AA alkalie batteries ito the battery bay, matchig the polarities (+ to +, - to -). 3 Close the battery cover ad slide it securely back ito place. To coect the supplied USB ifrared receiver, simply plug the ed of its USB cable ito oe of the computer s USB ports, as show: Whe usig the remote cotrol, always poit it directly at the receiver. 29 Usig your VAIO desktop Soy VAIO Desktop User Guide Butto Fuctio 1 MUTE Temporarily mutes the soud. Pressig it agai restores the soud. 2 STADBY Puts your computer ito Stadby mode. See Usig power savig modes (page 54). You caot put your computer ito Stadby mode while Giga Pocket or Giga Pocket Server is ruig; approximately 5 miutes before timer recordig starts; or just after the expiratio date of a Video Capsule. 3 MODE switch If you are usig more tha oe desktop with the remote cotrol, this switches cotrol betwee the computers. Set the switch from 1 to 3. whichever value is set i the target computer s Remote Commader Settig software. 1 is the default if you are just usig oe desktop. 4 umbered buttos 1-0 Used to select chaels. Press the ET butto after you press these umber buttos. You ca select up to 3-digit umbers. You caot chage chaels while recordig Applicatio buttos These buttos are used whe operatig Giga Pocket. Pressig MEU displays a meu o the computer scree. Press this butto agai to select software from the meu. START lauches the software that was selected with the MEU butto. CLOSE exits the software that was selected with the MEU butto. 6 JUMP Goes back to the previous chael you selected. Press it agai to retur to the curret chael. 7 ET Selects the chael. Writig CDs ad DVDs To achieve optimum performace whe writig data o to disc (also called burig ), follow these recommedatios: Oly use circular discs. Do ot use discs with ay other shape (star, heart, card, etc.), as this may damage the disc drive. Do ot strike or shake the computer while writig data to a disc. For optimum writig speed, deactivate the screesaver before writig data to a disc. Memory-residet disc utilities may cause ustable operatio or data loss. Deactivate these utilities before writig data to a disc. Whe usig a software applicatio to bur discs, make sure you exit ad close all other applicatios. ever touch the surface of the disc. Do ot use residet disc utilities or other residet utilities to speed up the access of discs, because they may cause the system to become ustable. Make sure that the screesaver is deactivated. Regio codes idicators are labelled o the DVDs to idicate i which regio ad o what type of player you ca play the disc. Uless a 2 or ALL is labelled o your DVD or o the packagig, you caot play the disc o this player. Do ot try to chage the regio code settigs of the DVD drive.
