3 1 Properties 1.1 Modem The tank data of the VISY-Command can be retrieved in the office (Head Office) by a modem via mobile communication network. This requires two modems to be connected one to the VISY-Command and the other to the computer in the head office. In this manual, the connection and the installation of the (GSM mobile modem) is described. Only modems by FAFNIR recommended should be used. Modems communicate only with modems of the same type. A phone modem can not communicate with a mobile modem and vice versa. We only recommend the following modems: devolo MicroLink 56k i (phone modem) (GSM mobile modem) Other modems are not supported. 1.2 Dial-up The modem in the head office calls the data of the VISY-Command modem via mobile communication network. No Internet connection is used. 1.3 Requirements Two mobile phone cards (SIM cards) with data transfer For each modem, a power supply One RS-232 connection cable between head office modem and computer Analysis software for VISY-Command data (for example, "VISY-Tank") Page 3/24

7 2.1.2 SIM cards Generally, the used SIM cards have to support the following features and functions: The SIM card must support "Data Transmission" meaning they have to be able to send data. A SIM card, which only supports transmission of voice, can not be used. Prepaid cards are not recommended. Reasons: "Data Transmission" is under circumstances not supported and if at all can be activated only via the provider. Credit can be lost or expired. The SIM card resp. the provider must support disabling of the PIN query. The modem only supports 3 V SIM cards Installation in the office (Head Office Modem) (1) Connect the antenna to the modem (2) Connect the modem with an RS-232 connecting cable to the computer (not included). (3) Start the computer and install the communication software for evaluating the VISY-Command data (e.g. FAFNIR software VISY-Tank). (4) Connect the plug-in power supply to the modem If the modem is turned on and connected to the computer when you start Windows, Windows recognizes it as new device and calls for driver installation. VISY-Tank uses the COM port always. The installation of the Windows driver "Standard 9600 bps modem" is recommended anyway. This prevents repeated Windows installation requests. If the FAFNIR software "VISY-Tank" is used, the modem is configured by the software. Deactivation of the SIM card PIN request is not required. The PIN request will be entered by an initialization code of the VISY-Tank system configuration (See Technical Documentation VISY-Tank). To transmit the PIN to the modem, the command AT+CPIN=#### must be entered, where #### is the PIN of the SIM card (see Chapter 4.1). Page 7/24

8 2.1.4 Installation at the petrol station (VISY-Command Modem) First connect the antenna to the modem The modem is configured only for the connection to the VISY-Command and must not be linked to a computer! Otherwise, the configuration will be deleted, and the modem must be reconfigured (see chapter 6). The PIN query must be disabled at the petrol station side. For this, the SIM card must be inserted into a mobile phone and then the PIN query must be disabled. There are two ways to connect the modem to a VISY-Command. It can be connected to the service interface or to the host interface card of the VI... card in the VISY-Command. Both options are described below: I. Connection to the service interface (1) Plug the "wire end" of the FAFNIR RS-232 connection cable (see Figure 1) through the cable gland of the VISY-Command housing. Connect the wires of the FAFNIR RS-232 connection cable as follows to the FAFNIR D-Sub 9 adapter: brown to 2 white to 3 green to Figure 5: FAFNIR D-Sub 9 adapter (2) Plug the FAFNIR D-Sub 9 adapter onto the service interface. To connect the modem to the service interface, the FAFNIR D-Sub 9 adapter and the FAFNIR RS-232 connecting cable must be used (see Figure 1) Page 8/24

10 II. Connection to the host interface If the modem shall be connected to the host interface, the host code must be set to "108" with the VISY-Setup software. Figure 8: Host setting with VISY-Setup Page 10/24

11 The modem is connected to the RS-232 host interface as follows: Host interface Rx Tx GND FAFNIR RS-232 connecting cable Figure 9: Connection to the host interface Connect: White to Rx (1) Brown to Tx (2) Green to GND (3) If no communication with the VISY-Command can be established, first the cable connection needs to be checked. 12 3 Test For the test, a terminal program is necessary. Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not include a terminal program! With any terminal program, the connection can be established for testing: (1) Connect the modem for the Head Office with an RS-232 cable to a computer. (2) Start HyperTerminal: Start> All Programs> Accessories> HyperTerminal The interface of the program looks different, depending on the version. (3) Enter a name (e.g. "Modem") and confirm with "OK". Figure 10: Name of connection (4) In the window "Connect to..." choose the connection: "COM <n>" (n = COM port which the modem is connected to) and click OK. 14 (7) Check the box at "Send line ends with line feeds", click "OK" Figure 14: Setting ASCII (8) Now enter ATDT<Phone number> in the HyperTerminal and confirm with <Enter>. The computer dials the modem at the petrol station. Upon successful connection, the modem at the petrol station responds with "Connect 9600 /..." Figure 15: HyperTerminal setting (9) All commands now can be sent to the modem at the petrol station. For example, to test the communication: "QVE" (VISY-Quick Protocol) to receive the version number. (10) Hang up "+++" (Do not confirm with <Enter>): With this escape sequence, the modem responds to commands again. "ATH" modem at the computer stops the communication with the VISY-Command and hangs up. (11) Call Disconnect To stop the connection "disconnect call". The program can now be closed. Page 14/24

15 4 Data request from the VISY-Command With the FAFNIR software "VISY-Tank", the data of the VISY-Command are retrieved. 4.1 Settings of the program VISY-Tank (1) System Configuration: Here, the individual communication channels are defined. Example: Channel B Port: Select the COM port to which the modem is connected (example: COM2) Modem: Telemodem (must always be chosen) Initialization: Command of the modem: AT+CPIN=#### (#### corresponds to the PIN of the SIM card, for example: AT+CPIN=1234) Dial command: ATDT Figure 16: VISY-Tank system configuration (2) Station Configuration Enter the phone number of the modem at the petrol station COM Port: Select the channel (here channel B) Enter baud rate Select protocol (if not VISY-X) Figure 17: Station configuration VISY-Tank All other settings, such as product, tanks of the station must be set according to the technical documentation for VISY tank. 16 4.2 Transmission of data VISY Monitor offers the possibility to access the levels and record the data in tables or to show the levels online. With the menu item "Data Reception" the data transfer is started: "Communication" "Data Reception" Choose Station press "!". After that a short time the window opens displaying the data transmission. 18 5 FAQ Q: Why a special RS-232 cable is needed for connection to VISY-Command? A: A modem is only ready for operation when it receives the control signals DTR and RTS from a computer. As the VI... card does not transmit these signals a trick will help. Set two jumpers: DSR DTR CTS RTS Once the modem is ready it signals this with DSR. Through the jumper DTR is set and for the modem the computer seams to be operational. The same applies to CTS and RTS if the modem is ready for transmission. Q: How can I rebuild the modem cable connected to the VISY-Command? A: There are two ways to connect the modem to a VISY-Command. It can be connected to the host interface or to the service port. 20 6 Modem Reconfiguration If the configuration of the modem for the VISY-Command has been deleted (see Chapter 2.1.4), it must be reconfigured. To reconfigure the modem a terminal program is necessary. Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not include a terminal program!
