Bring Your Own Technology in Mount Alvernia College
Peace prayer

Vision Learning should: Be fun and engaging Embed skills students will need in the future Be personalised Be differentiated TECHNOLOGY HELPS THIS HAPPEN
The Technology Committee was charged with finding a model for one-to-one device provision that: was financially sustaining; would support school-directed teaching and learning practices; was physically manageable, ie by IT Dept; met the identified needs of students; met the identified needs of parents; and considered the concerns raised by staff.
And we had to bear in mind: equity; cost for parents; that we value personalised learning; Servicing; Insurance; and not all parents are tech savvy and may need guidance on the type of device.
Our Solution Bring Your Own Technology
PC Laptop (HP, Lenovo Surface) Mac Laptop BYOT Tablet (Surface Go,iPad) Other (Phone, ipod)
BYOT in 2019 All students will be required to supply their own LAPTOP as a primary device Laptop - NOT ipad, Surface Go, or Chromebook Students will also be able to bring a secondary device if they have one such as a tablet\ipad We allow students to connect up to three devices
Minimum Specifications The minimum specifications for PRIMARY DEVICES: A laptop (NOT Chromebook, ipad, or similar) i5 processor or M5 4 GB RAM (prefer 8GB) 256GB of storage(or 128GB with external drive or card) Sufficient battery life to last a school day Windows 10 or MAC OS (latest version the better) Basically, a machine capable of running Adobe Suite the most hardwarehungry software currently
YES You can bring your primary school device if it meets the specifications
Software Basic software will be provided by the College: Microsoft Office through O365 Sophos Anti-Virus Free software you will may need to download: Video editor (imovie or Shot Cut or Windows Live Moviemaker or similar) Image editor (iphoto or Photo Gallery) Adobe Creative Cloud or CS6
Storage Students can save their files to Network Students can save their files to Moodle Students have Google Drive to back-up files Students have a One Drive to back-up files It is recommended that you buy your daughter an external hard drive on which to back-up her computer (PC) or create a Time Machine (Mac) or a memory card to extend storage capacity. 2Tb hard drives can be purchased for about $100 these days (4Tb -$150)
Spares in case of Repair Delays A limited number of spare computers will be available for loan through the IT Department if your laptop needs repairing need a day s notice to complete paperwork but for a maximum of a month This is not for forgotten laptops
Technology Levy The technology levy ($450 pa ) is not for computers: Internet access (thousands per month) Printing (printers, toner, and maintenance) Wireless network infrastructure Microsoft Office for all students Software licensing for some software, eg Adobe Creative Cloud, Sophos Anti-Virus
Technology Levy The technology levy ($450 pa ) is not for computers: Classroom TVs IT technicians and help desk personnel Servicing arrangements with Datacom Duplicate server/storage farms
Costs Datacom will go over its pricing for its offerings
Warranty and Servicing THIS IS SO IMPORTANT WE CAN T STRESS IT ENOUGH
Important Considerations When your daughter does not have a computer her learning is negatively impacted. Cheaper computers are lucky to last over eighteen months as a result you may need to buy two devices in three years (3 over 6 years). Sending a computer for repairs can take weeks (7 weeks for an insurance claim on a brand new computer). Warranties usually are for twelve months only. Our aim is to keep the laptop operating for running for at least three years.
Servicing We will be providing a number of services for ALL laptops such as: establishing what the problem is (hardware/software); Providing a written report to take to a repairer; and assisting in warranty claims. For those laptops purchased from Datacom : Warranty claims; Help with Accidental Damage claims (if applicable); and Quote on repairs to be done on-site.
Servicing For those laptops not purchased from Datacom : Warranty claims; Help with Accidental Damage claims (if applicable); and Quote on repairs to be done on site (this may not be possible). If you are using your computer from primary school find out if it still has a servicing agreement. HAVE A PLAN keep receipts, register your warranty, keep conditions.
Things we have Learnt over the Years Restarting laptops Viruses Onboarding Wi-fi, DNS, and Netflix Accidents happen Installing software process at end of year Passwords How you can help Well educated on use of technology eg cyber bullying
Our focus for your daughter is how she is represented in the future Common Sense Media, Digital Citizenship Poster, Educational Use
Mobile Phone Policy Leave phones in lockers during the day Check at lunchtime Special Circumstances Minimise distractions Stimulate positive interactions between students Communication at appropriate times
Timeline for Rest of the Year September Datacom ordering portal opening 28 October Last day to order for delivery in December Portal closed for October pricing Orders after 28 October may be subject to different prices and delayed production. 3 5 December laptops delivered to College invitation to make set-up appointments will be issued about a week before. This will also be done in the week before school starts (21-23 January).
