1 Microsoft MS Excel 2016 Quick Reference Guide Quick Start Guide Quick Access Toolbar Keep favourite commands permanently visible. Explore the ribbon See what Excel can do by clicking the ribbon tabs and exploring available tools. Discover contextual commands Select tables, charts, or other objects in a workbook to reveal additional tabs. Find whatever you need Look up Excel commands, get Help, or search the Web. Share your work with others Invite other people to view and edit cloud-based workbooks. Insert and edit functions Use the formula bar to view or edit the selected cell or to insert functions into your formulas. Customize charts Select a chart to quickly add, change, or remove any existing chart elements and formatting. Show or hide the ribbon Click the pin icon to keep the ribbon displayed, or hide it again by clicking the arrow. Switch or create sheets Click the sheet tabs to switch between workbook sheets or to create new ones. Change your view Click the status bar buttons to switch between view options, or use the zoom slider to magnify the sheet display to your liking.

2 File ribbon tab Also known as the Backstage view, the File ribbon tab contains all the operational functions, such as printing and saving. Use the Account option to sign in and access your recently used files anywhere, on any device, OneDrive and SharePoint. New to 2016 is an improved version history. Go to File > History to see a complete list of changes that have been made to your workbook, as well as accessing previous versions. New to 2016 is the highest contrast Office theme yet; called the Black theme. Select File > Account, and then click the drop down menu next to Office Theme. The theme you choose will be applied across all your Office applications. View the lesson on-line to learn more.

3 Home ribbon tab Contains the most commonly used MS Excel tools for editing, formatting and customising spreadsheet elements. Insert ribbon tab Enables elements to be inserted into a spreadsheet, such as tables, images, charts, headers and footers. New to 2016 is the ability to insert shapes with pre-set fills as well as theme colours to quickly get the look you want. Also, if you have a touch device, you can write math equations by hand, and let MS Excel convert them into text. New to 2016 sees the introduction of 3D Maps, a geospatial visualization tool. There are also additional charts too called Treemap, Sunburst, Waterfall, Histogram, Pareto and Box & Whisker.

4 Page Layout ribbon tab Contains tools relating to the overall appearance and set up of your workbook, such as themes, margins, breaks and sheet options. Formulas ribbon tab Used to access all the commands needed to define, control and audit MS Excel formulas.

5 Data ribbon tab Provides tools to connect to external data, as well as managing the data within your worksheets. View the lessons online to learn more. New to 2016 is the built-in querying functionality within the Get & Transform group that previously was only available as a separate add-in called Power Query. Review ribbon tab Contains a collection of workbook proofing and collaboration features such as the spelling checker, comments, track changes and protection options. New to 2016 is Smart Lookup, powered by Bing. When you right click a word or phrase and choose Smart Lookup, the Insights pane opens with definitions, and internet related search results.

6 View ribbon tab Enables various view selections to be made, such as page break preview or page layout views. It s also possible to zoom in and out of a worksheet from here, or to apply other selective view options. View the lessons on-line to learn more. Contextual ribbon tabs Contextual ribbon tabs only appear when a particular object is selected, such charts or PivotTables. These contextual tabs contain commands specific to the object selected.

7 Collaborative working New to 2016 is the Share button. To invite others to view or edit your workbooks in the cloud, click the Share button in the top right corner of the app window. In the Share pane that opens, you can get a sharing link or send invitations to the people you select. You can chat with collaborators in real time by using Skype for Business, and view workbook activity, all from the top-right corner on the ribbon. Getting help New to 2016 is the Tell me what you want to do area. From here you can enter words and phrases about what you want to do next and quickly get to features you want to use or actions you want to perform. You can also use Tell Me to find help about what you're looking for, or to use Smart Lookup to research or define the term you entered. MS Excel 2016 on-line lessons There are 5 skill levels that you can access on-line : Introduction, Intermediate, Advanced, Master and Expert.
