1 Page 1 of 18 Borrowing ebooks: Devices using Windows 8 including the Microsoft Surface Overview: Learn how to locate, download and authorize the OverDrive Media Console App required to access ebooks and Audiobooks from the Library for your Microsoft Surface. Then find, borrow, and read items from the Library for your device. 2 Download the OverDrive Media Console App Start by turning on your Windows 8 Device and follow these instructions: Page 2 of From the home screen tap on the Store tile. 2. On the next screen, swipe from the right side of the screen and tap Search. 3. Type overdrive into the search bar. Then tap the option that reads overdrive media console. It should be one of the first suggestions displayed. 4. Tap the Install button below to the OverDrive Media Console selection to begin the download. 5. OverDrive should now appear on your start menu as its own tile.

3 Page 3 of 18 Authorize your Device with an Adobe ID Tap the OverDrive App to begin. The home screen within OverDrive on your Microsoft Surface has two options: My Collection Displays your currently checked out library materials Get Books A direct link to the libraries associated with your OverDrive app (in this example it will just be The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library) Before we can begin to check out or read any books, there are a few one-time set up procedures you will have to do before you can use Overdrive. You have to authorize your device to use the Adobe EPUB ebook format (which is the ebook format compatible with both Overdrive and your device) and tell Overdrive you are borrowing items from the Buffalo & Erie County Library System. To begin, swipe from the right side of the screen to show the hidden menu and then tap on Settings.

4 Page 4 of 18 Once you see the Settings menu, tap on Accounts. On the Settings screen you must enter your Adobe ID and password and then tap Authorize. If you do not already have an Adobe ID: Tap on Get a Free Adobe ID and you will be taken to the Adobe ID web site to register for one.

5 Page 5 of 18 Complete the six fields to sign up for an Adobe ID. You will need to create a new password for this account. Click Create. Uncheck this box to opt out of s from Adobe. After you click create you will have to get back to your Overdrive App by tapping your Surface s Windows button, then the Overdrive App. Swipe to the right to show the hidden menu and tap settings again. Now fill out your Adobe ID and Adobe password and then tap Authorize. Your Microsoft Surface is now authorized to be used with Overdrive. Add the Library to the App Once you have successfully authorized OverDrive Media Console you may add the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library for quick and easy browsing of our downloadable collection. Simply follow these instructions: 1. On your Home screen tap Find a Library. This will take you to the library browsing Type in Tap Central Library (Even if it is not your local Library select Central).

6 Page 6 of After you tap on Central Library it should appear alone on the screen. Take your finger and press down on top of Central again. A + sign will appear on the bottom of the page. Click this plus sign to add Buffalo and Erie County Library to your Library list. Geek Tip: If you have an account at multiple library systems, such as B&ECPL and the New York Public Library, both accounts can be added to OverDrive, allowing you to access the materials of both libraries.

7 Page 7 of 18 Borrow an Item Open the App. Under Get Books, tap Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. This will open the library s OverDrive website in your web browser. In most cases, you ll have a title or author in mind, so tap Search. You will see a basic search box where you can enter keywords, a title, or an author. Click the magnifying glass to initiate the search. Browse the featured selections or use the Search area

8 Page 8 of 18 Since we are looking for particular file format types that are compatible with the Overdrive Media Console app, performing an Advanced Search is more effective. Tap Advanced Search. The Menu Button in this area will open and close the browse by category options. On the next page is the Advanced Search screen. You can complete one or more fields, but typically you ll enter the title or author name and pick the format type. If you are searching for a phrase, it helps to put quotes around the words to be more exact. Adjust the format to EPUB ebook (unless you want to download an Audiobook, then choose MP3). Go to the bottom of the page and tap Search. A search results page will display. Twenty results are displayed per page and the results can be filtered by format, subject, publisher, grade level, and device. You can also tap Show only titles with copies available to narrow the results.

9 Page 9 of 18 Checked out Available There will be an Icon in the upper right hand corner of the item. If this icon is black the item is available. If the icon is grayed out you may choose to place a request. There are Audiobooks and ebooks in Overdrive. Look at the icon in the top right corner; if it is an icon of headphones then it is an Audiobook and if it is an icon of an open book then it is an ebook. Tap the cover of the title and some options will appear. Tap Borrow to Borrow the book right away. Tap More to learn more about the title.

10 Page 10 of 18 If you tap More you will be sent to a new page. From here you can check out a book. Tap Borrow to check out the title. Enter the library card number that appears on the back of your card. Omit the letter A if your card begins with A. Then tap Sign in. Tap Settings in order to change your lending period.

11 Page 11 of 18 You may change your settings to default to 14 days. Tap Save. Tap Download to select format, select Adobe EPUB ebook and tap Confirm & Download. A window will open in the middle of your screen. Click Go to bookshelf.

12 Page 12 of 18 Place a Hold If an item you are interested in is currently checked out you can place a hold on item so that when it is available you will be able to borrow it. Remember if you see a title that has a grayed out icon, that title is checked out. To place a hold, tap on the title. Then Tap either Place a Hold or More to learn more about the title. If you tapped More you will be brought to a new page. To place a hold, tap on the Place a Hold button.

13 Page 13 of 18 On the next screen you will have to fill out your address twice. This is how you are notified when your book is available to borrow. Once the is sent to you, you have 3 days to click on the link in the and check out the book. Enter your address twice. You only do this the first time you place a hold request. Tap on Place a Hold to confirm your hold request. You will see a confirmation screen informing you that you have 3 days to check out your book once you receive an . Tap on Click here to view your Holds. On the Holds screen you can see all your holds and where you are in the queue among other information. To update your tap Edit. To remove a hold tap Remove. You can access account information like current books checked out (i.e. Bookshelf) and Holds at any time by tapping on the Account symbol at the top of the page.

14 Page 14 of 18 Read Your ebook in the App Return to the OverDrive App main menu by tapping the Windows button and then tapping on the OverDrive App icon on the Start menu. On the main screen you ll see Bookshelf. This is where you ll see any materials you ve checked out. Tap on the Book you would like to read. The book will open and you can start reading. Tap on the right side of the screen to go to the next page. Tap on the left to go back a page. There are many different options you can use when you are in book reading mode.

15 Page 15 of 18 Tap the center of the screen. You will see a variety of menu options appear at the top and bottom of the screen. In the upper right corner there are two options, More, which contains details about saved bookmarks and the table of contents, and Options, which allows you to change the look of the text on screen, for easier reading. Create a Bookmark Tap the Add Bookmark icon at any time to save a page in your bookmark list. You can access your bookmark list by tapping on More, then Bookmarks.

16 Page 16 of 18 If you tap Table of Contents, you have the ability to jump from chapter to chapter in a book. A list of the chapters will appear. To navigate to the chapter you want, just tap the one you want. Renew an Item (optional) Remember every ebook you borrow from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library is automatically returned at the end of the loan period. However, you can renew an item if there are no holds currently on the item. Here s how it works: Within in the Overdrive App, tap Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. Next Tap on the Account symbol and make sure you are looking at the Bookshelf view. Three days before an item expires, a Renew Link will appear below the expiration date. IF it is in GREEN, the item is eligible for renewal. IF it is GRAYED OUT, the item is NOT eligible for renewal, but you can place a hold request on it.

17 Page 17 of 18 Once you click a green renewal link you will see a confirmation screen. Click the Renew button. You will be taken back to your bookshelf view and now there will be a Renew checkmark. You will get an after your original loan period expires. You must follow the instructions and click on the link in the to renew (or basically check out the book again) for another loan period. If you click on a grayed out renew link you will see this Click on the link to place a hold on the item. See Place a Hold instructions in this handout. At any time you can click on Holds and see what items are set to renew, what items you have on a waiting list, and what number you are in the queue.

18 Page 18 of 18 Return an Item Early (optional) Open your book. Then tap the center of the book to bring up the different options. Then click More a popup will appear then click on Return/Delete.
